Revised Version of, Do not go gentle into that good night - Dylan Thomas

Revised Version of, Do not go gentle into that good night - Dylan Thomas

Revised Version of, Do not go gentle into that good night. By: Dylan Thomas

Please go gentle into that good night,
    Old age shouldn’t burn and rave at close of day;
Don’t rage, why rage against the dying of the light?

Wise men at their end look forward to that heavenly light,
Their lives will no longer be filled with pain and strife,
They will go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how you should
take the free gift of the water of life.
So don’t Rage, Don’t rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, surely their reward is on its way,
They will go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze at the face of Jesus Christ,
So don’t Rage, Don’t rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Sing, bless, me now with your last words, I pray.
You will go gentle into that good night.
Don’t rage, Don’t rage against the dying of the light.

O odsyłaniu filozofii do lamusa | PF 84

O odsyłaniu filozofii do lamusa | PF 84

„Lamus”. Dlaczego jednak (znowu!) odwołujemy się do poezji? Bo ulegamy nastrojowi chwili, w której tegoroczną literacką nagrodę Nike otrzymuje po dłuższej przerwie autor poetyckiego tomiku pt. „Mondo Cane” - Jerzy Jarniewicz. No i wciąż jeszcze pamiętamy walijskiego poetę Dylana Thomasa, który wszystkim odsyłanym do lamusa nie pozwala "wchodzić łagodnie do tej dobrej nocy".

Wiersz Antoniego Słonimskiego w interpretacji Niko Niakasa.

    How to Transform Our Politics

    How to Transform Our Politics

Uniquely, this week we are discussing both a new publication and a new institution.

The publication is a book called Out of the Ordinary: How Everyday Life Inspired a Nation and How It Can Again. This book examines the political thought of a group of writers and artists in mid-20th-century Britain, centred around Dylan Thomas, George Orwell, and J.B. Priestley. Their ideas, it argues, offer a vision for how to overcome the polarisation and alienation of our politics today.

The institution is the UCL Policy Lab, which was launched earlier this week, and which seeks to bring together UCL’s top political scientists and economists with policymakers and others in order, we hope, to foster positive change.

Professor Marc Stears, the author of Out of the Ordinary and the inaugural Director of the UCL Policy Lab, joins Uncovering Politics this week.

    Mentioned this week:

UCL’s Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy offers a uniquely stimulating environment for the study of all fields of politics, including international relations, political theory, human rights, public policy-making and administration. The Department is recognised for its world-class research and policy impact, ranking among the top departments in the UK on both the 2021 Research Excellence Framework and the latest Guardian rankings.

    Philosophy Smackdown with Jason Silva

    Philosophy Smackdown with Jason Silva

Stuart and Andie talk with Jason Silva, philosopher, futurist, and host of National Geographic’s Brain Games, and the Shots of Awe video channel. Their talk is a wild ride through the nature of reality. It’s a mind-melting mind-meld of meanings as burners and as earthlings.

They discuss life, death and how a bicycle can induce synchronicity. They explore how psychedelics cause pivotal mental states of suggestibility to brainwash ourselves for the better, or succumb to delusional thinking, or both.

They paradoxically try to schedule nowness, and control ecstatic surrender. And if you listen closely, you may hear a love story hidden between all the philosophy quotations. Finally, they explore key ingredients to Burning Man’s secret sauce that doesn’t exist. But then again, does existence even exist?

    The Clerical Heron

    The Clerical Heron

What is it about the heron that makes it such a frequent subject for social media posts featuring canal and riverside birds? There is something about it that is strange, singular almost. Spotting one is often felt to be a significant event that should be recorded and remembered. This week we look at the heron in the company of Dylan Thomas, John Moriarty, and Wendell Berry, and explore why it has such an impact on us.

    Journal entry:

    “15th May, Saturday

There are times, sitting here, that stillness seems to fill the boat
     Like morning light
Pooling and seeping into every corner and crack.
     It’s not silence
            Nor even a quietness
     - Though it is both of those.

And all I can hear is Penny softly breathing,
     My pen scratching on paper,
     A wood pigeon’s lazy call.

Even the second-hand on the clock seems to move slower.”

    Episode Information

All the soundscapes featured in this episode are all recorded on site apart from the sample of the grey heron (Ardea cinerea) night call. This was recorded at Berkel en Rodenrijs, Lansingerland, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands by Susanne Kuijpers on the night of 10th May 2021. It is available under Creative Copyright licence at Xeno-Canto: Sharing bird sounds from around the world.

In this episode I read a passage from John Moriarty’s (2007) What the Curlew Said: Nostos continued. University of Michigan: Lilliput Press.

I also read ‘The Heron’ by Wendell Berry that can be found in his (2018) anthology The Peace of Wild Things: And other poems. London: Penguin Books

The book I refer to by Richard Jeffries (1879) is his Wildlife in a Southern County of which many versions exist. It has recently been republished, with an introduction by Richard Mabey by Little Toller – Wildlife in a Southern County.

    ...about The Horse's Mouth (1958)

    ...about The Horse's Mouth (1958)

Alec Guinness wrote and starred in this very funny and inspirational film about a painter who is connected to, and driven by, a strange mystical force called art.

Directed by Ronald Neame. Starring Alec Guinness, Kay Walsh, Renee Houston, Mike Morgan. Screenplay by Alec Guinness based on the book by Joyce Cary.

How is the world wrong about this movie?

From Andras: This is my favorite Alec Guinness performance. Even though it was filmed in ‘57 and released in ‘58 “The Horse’s Mouth” feels like the beginning of the 60’s with its anarchic exuberance and rebellion in the name of art. More beatnik than hippie, I can’t help but feel like it influenced, or at least entertained, The Beatles and the rest of that generation of young British rockers and comedians when they were just inspired English kids like the one played by the poor doomed Mike Morgan in this film.

Episode 20: Writing in the Footsteps of History - Peter Thabit Jones
Peter Thabit Jones is a poet from Swansea in South Wales. He is the author of sixteen books and his poems have been translated into over twenty-two languages. He is the recipient of a number of awards, including the Arts Council of Wales Award, the Homer European Medal for Poetry and Art, and the Shabdaguchha Journal Poet of the Year Award for his contribution to international poetry. He is also the founder and editor of The Seventh Quarry, a poetry magazine published in Swansea with an international perspective. On this episode, Gideon and Richard speak to Peter about the life of a working poet, his time spent traveling America, and how he came to be commissioned, alongside Aeronwy Thomas the poet and daughter of Dylan Thomas, to write the Dylan Thomas Walking Tour of Greenwich Village, on which Peter kindly led us in episode 18. Peter's new book America, Aeronwy and Me: Dylan Thomas Tribute Tour is available now.

Episode 18: A Walking Tour of Greenwich Village - Dylan Thomas

Episode 18: A Walking Tour of Greenwich Village - Dylan Thomas
Dylan Thomas is one of the most recognisable Welsh names in the United States. He’s best known for his landmark poems such as ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’ and ‘Death shall have no dominion’, his play for voices ‘Under Milk Wood’, and classic stories such as ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’. Born in Swansea in 1914, the legendary poet spent much of his life traveling back and forth between homes in London and Wales, yet to many he will always be associated with New York City. Between 1950 and 1953 Dylan visited New York on four occasions, the last of which culminated with his passing at the age of 39. On this episode Gideon & Richard are joined by Swansea poet and author, Peter Thabit Jones, for a guided walking tour through Greenwich Village visiting places of significance to Dylan, including a few of his old watering holes. The tour, written by Peter Thabit Jones and Aeronwy Thomas, can be purchased as a self-guided book or accessed through its affiliated app.

Episode 3: Making a Movie With a Cast of Professional Drunks - Cian Llewellyn

Episode 3: Making a Movie With a Cast of Professional Drunks - Cian Llewellyn

Based upon Dylan Thomas' short story, ‘The Outing’ features a cast of untrained actors who, guided by Cian, come together in this quirky yet memorable short film. Richard and Gideon probe Cian on his unique methods and discuss his own unlikely journey to the big screen.
