Her older sister helped her read, and then Bernice helped her daughter to read. Bernice and her sister didn’t have the training to teach reading, but training in Orton Gillingham methods is highly recommended…And mandated by Ed Code 56335 in CA.

What are the Five Key Concepts of Print

Children in kinder, first, second and even third grade are not knowing how to print! This doesn’t need to be complicated. I want to show you in 5 Steps how you can teach printing along with other phonemic skills with my easy-to-follow planner and a popular Scope and Sequence.

I’ve been working on creating this video for two years. Children are at so many levels so when you see children not printing, it’s time to get back to the printing basics. The first half of a lesson is teaching beginning and ending sounds and rhymes. Then there are some phonemic activities we do like syllable or letter substitutions and deletions.  In the end, we teach the printing of letters.  Please let me know your questions about printing and I’ll be sure to get back to you!

Bernice worked 12 years in Christian Radio communications in Southern California from1984 to 1996. Then she served 18 years in Miami, Fl. (1998- 2016) creating Spanish & Portuguese programming for Latin America and Portuguese speaking countries. One of her passions has been simultaneous translation, which has had her  travel to 15 countries as a public speaker & translator.

She is honored to be Married to Rev. Anthony Cheverez, Pastor of The Sanctuary Evangelical Church in Ontario, CA., where they do outreach work for young people & offer support to underprivileged families. She enjoys touching lives & seeing people thrive which brings her the greatest honor & satisfaction.

Did you know kids who aren't reading by fourth grade are at risk of dropping out of high school and going to prison? Thirty-five percent of high school drops outs are dyslexic! 

Christy Corbett is a retired high school English teacher, mother of four and "Grandma Christy" to twelve. Born in Salt Lake City, UT, and raised in sunny California. One of my children and several grandchildren have dyslexia. She was trained to help her child read and he became an avid reader. He even went to college and got a degree. You need to step up and advocate for your child if they struggle in school and you need to start advocating for dyslexia at a young age. Her son a funny and clever and wanted attention but he was struggling.  His confidence soared after he learned to read.

The Trick to Teaching Multi-Syllabic Words -Orton Gillingham Methods

Some vowel teams (ea, ou) generally have one sound. But learn about  the two sounds with the LION Rule. 

Kids have trouble reading when they can't read multisyllabic words. So we teach syllable types. OG training has introduced Zoo Syllable types to help engage students and they are easy to teach! In words following the LION syllable type, each vowel says one sound. (words like diet, client, Leon, cruel, etc). Listen here and learn!

How to Teach The Lion Rule – Orton Gillingham Vowel Team Syllable Type is one of 6 Orton Gillingham syllable types but one of 11 Zoo Animal Syllable types.  Each vowel in the LION syllable does in a different syllable. LI  ON.

How to Teach “TCH” – You First Must Teach the “Vowel – Consonant- E” Rule

Teaching the difference between when we use ch and tch needs to be taught explicitly. Orton Gillingham requires teachers teach explicitly and repeatedly. 

But before you can teach “tch” you need to be sure the student understands that in a vowel-consonant – e word, the “e” is silent and is dropped.

Her first was Alpha Learning Center in 2005 when she was a Supplemental Education Service (SES) provider for five low-income school districts in California. She was an adjunct professor at Azusa Pacific University while she was an Educational Therapist at a private Christian School. She returned to school to work seven years on her Doctorate and chose to be a substitute teacher during that time. Then she accepted a full time Resource teaching position at Para Los Ninos Charter Middle School in Los Angeles.

Her Doctorate is in Education Leadership and Administration. She is the Vice President of Christian Business Partners in Upland, a member of the Global Society of Female Entrepreneurs, and in her second term as a board member for the International Dyslexia Association. In 2021, Dr. Marianne earned several awards: Social Impact Award Finalist - Lady in Blue, Lifetime Legacy Award Nominee - National Women of Influence, 100 Women Global Award - CD Wilson Events, and Certificates of Recognition from the California State Assembly, the California State Senate, and the County of Riverside.  

She hosts three YouTube Channels, three Podcast Channels and has hosted educational webinars over the past two years. She is a speaker and author of seven books.

February 26 is the Spring Conference for the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) in the Tri-County branch in California from 12-4:30. We will have the renowned Dr. Maryanne Wolf as our main speaker addressing the Reading Brain: Where Poetry Meets Science in the Service of All Children.  I and three others will be speaking on the Science of Reading. I got sad witnessing kids fail in school and seeing homes turn into battlefields over the most empowering thing like reading - because a child is dyslexic and struggles with reading.

I know many dyslexic people are gifted. I believe if the environment will embrace reading, it opens up the world of opportunity and brings peace to the household.

Education is Dr. Cintron’s third career, spring boarded from subbing in her children’s preschool to being a substitute teacher in a mental health hospital. She never dreamed of earning 5 degrees with a call to expose that “Dyslexia is a Trait of Genius!”  She’s been an educator for over 23 years and a classroom teacher for 10. She earned a Doctorate Degree and two Masters Degrees.
