This is a lesson teaching the turtle syllable type. It is also called the consonant  “-le” syllable type. A student asked me what the “-“ meant and does she see it on a test? I told her the “-“ means most of our consonants can go there as in tle, ble, dle, zle, gle,etc. I provide all these in my phonogram cards, large and small cards if you want to reach out to me. Teaching syllable types is one thing, but OG also teaches animal types with the syllable. This one just happens to be in the group of 6 Syllable Types and is an OG model (others are tiger words, camel words, catfish words, reptile words, etc.). I’m here to help!  You may want to practice some of the reading skills with your child at home. The gold standard for teaching reading is Orton Gillingham or OG. It’s not a curriculum, it’s a model of how to teach. I show you how to do syllable deletions with 2 -3 syllable words, and sound substitutions. Then I show you my phonogram cards and show you how I use them. Finally, I demonstrate teaching homophones, words that sound the same but are spelled differently and mean different things.  All these materials are available from me if you contact me. Parents are seeing their children fail fast with an inability or lack of desire to read. If your child has dyslexia, he won’t learn to read without a specific multisensory reading curriculum. If you are concerned your child may have dyslexia, this is a prescreen I give to teachers to see if their students can read or sound out these nonwords. We call them nonsense words. Have your child write 5 of the sentences in this video.  Shorten the sentences up if your child is younger. Then, if he/she can’t write the sentences, have your child try to sound out the words.  Deficiency in phonemic awareness is one of the three eligibility requirements for dyslexia. The other two are cognitive and reading ability having two grade levels or more difference. All this needs to be assessed by a professional. I can help.

So many parents have shared concerns that their children are struggling now in Kinder because they missed preschool school last year and teachers just need help. I conducted a 2-Day Webinar in 2020 called Kinder Champs anticipating this crisis back then, never believing it would see us into 2022. Kinders need help – Parents you need help with your kids. Many parents reach out to me to ask how they can tell if their child has dyslexia. There are lists of symptoms and I want you to take of picture of what I show you in this video. I read some of them for those tuning into the podcast, but seeing the video is really helpful.

I also share the classroom accommodations your school is most likely to offer your child in lieu of giving them the help they really need. Dyslexic children really DO need a multisensory reading intervention, following an Orton Gillingham model. I’ve had over 200 hours of Orton Gillingham practicum and my reading programs are what you or your school needs. I know many dyslexic people are gifted. I believe if the environment will embrace reading, it opens up the world of opportunity and brings peace to the household.

Education is Dr. Cintron’s third career, spring boarded from subbing in her children’s preschool to being a substitute teacher in a mental health hospital. She never dreamed of earning 5 degrees with a call to expose that “Dyslexia is a Trait of Genius!”  She’s been an educator for over 23 years and a classroom teacher for 10. She earned a Doctorate Degree and two Masters Degrees.

She has a Master of Education in General Education and in Special Education complementing her two California Teaching Credentials. She is a Dyslexia Specialist, President of Step By Step Dyslexia Solutions, and an International Teacher Trainer. She tutors students with Dyslexia and is currently in a Practicum to receive Orton Gillingham Associate Level Certification. Dr. Cintron is a curriculum developer “Step By Step Reading©” and an app developer CDSM intended to work together to help the dyslexic child read.
