#018 The History and Research on Primitive Reflexes

#018 The History and Research on Primitive Reflexes

Today’s episode is all about the history and current research on primitive reflexes. I also cover the three main organizations that offer training on primitive reflex integration and discuss specific research findings. My goal for this episode is to help parents understand what we know, suspect, and need more information on when it comes to primitive reflexes and developmental delays. My hope is that this will help parents find the right care for their children.

Here are links to the three main training organizations. I studied with the Institute of Neuro-Physiological Psychology and LOVE their program (I am obviously biased). You can find information about their programs as well as links to their books and research here.

They also have branches all over the world and each country has a separate website. You can find information on the U.S. branch as well as a list of current U.S. licentiates here. I think you have to contact them in order to get the contact information of the licentiates though.

You can find the website for the MNRI method here.

You can find the website for the rhythmic movement method here.

When I started this episode I was surprised to see how much new research has come out since I was in school. Below are links to several different studies, some mentioned specifically in this episode some not:

You can find a long list of research authored or co-authored by INPP licentiates here.

You can find a long list of research specifically related to MNRI here.

Here is a list of individual studies related to primitive reflexes. I mention a couple of these specifically in the episode, the rest extra for any other crazy nerds out there who like to really get into the weeds with this stuff. Enjoy!

(I had to just make a numbered list to save character space in this description)

    4.
    5.

There is more research if any of you get that far! I was very excited to see research coming from so many different areas all saying similar things. Obviously we need research to help refine practices and look at long term impacts, but I am excited that this area is growing.

If you want more information you can find my website here.

EPISODE 30: A 57 DAY HIKE ACROSS GREAT BRITAIN (WHILST BAREFOOT!)

EPISODE 30: A 57 DAY HIKE ACROSS GREAT BRITAIN (WHILST BAREFOOT!)

In May 2019, world traveller, the Barefoot Backer, undertook an epic 57-day, 952-mile trek from the furthest Easterly point of Great Britain to the furthest Westerly point. Few people had walked the route before, but it wasn’t the only challenge BB, a somewhat inexperienced trekker, faced.  As his name would suggest, BB’s goal was to walk as much of the route barefoot whilst at the same time dealing with his dyspraxia, a condition which affects physical coordination and spacial awareness.

Carrying all his equipment and part wild camping, learn what inspired BB to undertake the challenge, how he planned his route, and the logistics and difficulties he faced each day whilst catching a glimpse of Great Britain in all her glorious geographical and climatic extremes.

    Awkward conversations with Daniel Oliver

    Awkward conversations with Daniel Oliver

Oriana Fox speaks with live artist Daniel Oliver about the daring mix of pre-planning, chance, nakedness and collaboration in his work. Oliver wants audiences to be euphoric about or made uncomfortable by his participatory work, anything but indifferent. In embracing the label dyspraxic along with punk aesthetics, he welcomes the potential for getting things wrong. In fact, he believes that's what makes live art the ideal medium for his work. Taking agency as a neurodiverse artist for Oliver means that if you don't like what he does, you're just ableist.

The first half of this interview was recorded live on Instagram in May 2021 as part of Oriana's digital residency at Mimosa House Gallery. You can watch the original video here.

Oriana Fox is a London-based, New York-born artist with a PhD in self-disclosure. She puts her expertise to work as the host of the talk show performance piece The O Show.

Daniel Oliver is a performance artist and scholar who specialises in participatory performance and awkwardness. His experience with dyspraxia has lead to an invested interest in neurodiversity and its place in contemporary performance practices and scholarship. His book Awkwoods: Daniel Oliver’s Dyspraxic Adventures in Participatory Performance was published by Unbound in 2019. Oliver's latest piece Artparty Boardgame is touring the following UK venues in May 2022:

    Neurodiversity in the workplace

    Neurodiversity in the workplace

To build a truly inclusive culture in your organisation you need to consider, and allow for, how every individual accesses and can thrive in, the workplace. Understanding neurodiversity is one key to enabling this.

In this month’s podcast, Steven Copsey talks to our guests about their challenges of finding work, the impact of having a supportive line manager and the challenges of working from home due to Covid 19.  We also offer support and advice to employers to make it easier for those with neurodivergent conditions to join their organisations and challenge preconceptions – not everyone who has Autism and other neurodiverse conditions, such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Asperger's, is the same.

Our guests are our very own Zeinab Ali, Inclusive Employers’ Digital Marketing and Membership Adminstrator, and Simon Richards, Vice-Chair of All Wales People First National Council. We’re also joined by Naz Mir, Inclusive & Diversity Consultant at Inclusive Employers.
