093: Interview tips | Embrace the MINDSET for successful interviews

093: Interview tips | Embrace the MINDSET for successful interviews

Do you get in your own head about interviews? Tell yourself that you don't enjoy them? Or complain that it's a stupid process? You may even have told yourself "I'll never be good at interviews".

That thinking is unlikely to get you the job or opportunity you are seeking because as per one of those famous Henry Ford quotes "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right."

Why ruin before your chances before you even start due to that sort of thinking?

In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast - we take a look at how to "Embrace the mindset for successful interviews." There are 5 very clear recommended thought processes here and implementing some of them could be an absolute game-changer for you when it comes to navigating through the recruitment process.

This episode is one of many "interview tips" episodes coming up in this season of the podcast so be sure to stay tuned for more (and don't forget to share the link to this episode with friends if you find it useful).

While waiting for some of the upcoming new interview tip episodes - check out this one below about different types of interview.

079: How do I become confident in my career?

Recent conversations with some incredible young people early on their career journey reminded me how important CONFIDENCE is when it comes to career progression.

In fact, I recently did a workshop on "Career Clarity and Confidence" for  a recruitment company and experiencing the engagement in the topic further reminded me how valuable it is to talk about this.

... Which leads as here - an episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast called "How can I become confident in my career".

In this episode we explore both self confidence and career confidence (there is a difference) and discuss on 5 things which can contribute to your confidence:

    1. Experience
    2. Values and beliefs
    3. Employability skills
    4. Exploring job sectors and building your related expertise
    5. Affirmations

Check out the episode, don't forget to share it if it's useful (c'mon - who wouldn't benefit from some reflection and action around confidence?!) and subscribe if you're not yet a subscriber. All things being well, a new episode will drop every Monday (what a way to start the week!)

070: How do I balance career development and exam season?

070: How do I balance career development and exam season?

Does this feel like a tricky balance for you right now? We know that taking purposeful steps towards your career development is a good thing... but what does or should that look like during exam season?

Before we even start down a road on this, let me emphasise that the most important thing is that your mental and physical health are in good shape. It is from this foundation that you are in a more solid position to make some well informed, self-reflective decisions about where are how to spend your time right now.

Whether you are working towards exams as part of your university degree, your A-Levels or equivalent, your GCSEs etc - there's a chance that this question has crossed your mind.

The main thing here is understanding that "balance" does not mean 50/50. Listen to the episode and I hope it helps you to work out what the best balance is for you during exam season.

    Best of luck with it!

055: Is comparison with your peers bringing you down? Try the "CHEER method" to change your perspective

How do I stop comparing myself with others?

Is comparison with others bringing you down? Making you feel sad? Insecure? Annoyed (at yourself and at their success - though of course you're likely to be happy for them too). But why? Why always them? Why not you?

    Ooooh - the realness!

In this episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast, Gina Visram introduces you to a term she first learned from one of her online business mentors, Marie Forleo. "Comparisonitis" - the disease / infliction in which we negatively compare ourselves to others. This isn't a verbatim definition but if you'd like to have a look at Marie talking about it in relation to business - in a way where you can also apply the lessons to your own situation - check out the link below.

This feeling as human and relatable as it is, is mainly detrimental to your own progress.

So, what is the best way to live with comparisonitis in a way that it becomes a positive, not a negative in your life? Learn some techniques in this episode.

Gina talks about a new method that she has just created (seriously,  it was for this episode!) - called the CHEER method. This stands for:

    • Celebrate
    • Help
    • Embrace
    • Equivalent
    • Reflect

To find out more about what these words really mean in this context, you'll need to check out the episode.

All of these can help you to turn comparison into something powerful and even positive in your world. You can try all of these or try one - don't overwhelm yourself... but do something different,  because the crappy feeling around comparison isn't serving you right now, is it?

If this episode has helped you - do please:

PS - Here is the link to a video that Marie created about comparisonitis. Remember, her content is targeted at entrepreneurs however this content applies for so many circumstances (including yours if you have read this far!)

054: Time sensitive - Apply now for these (finance, banking, consulting) internships and other opportunities

This episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast is your reminder that even though you have just touched down at university and may not even have unpacked all of your bags as yet... the application cycle for some popular sectors is underway and you won't want to miss these opportunities.

Opportunities within the finance / banking / consulting sectors are open now (including spring weeks, internships and graduate jobs) with deadlines in October, November and December - and also with some rolling opportunities for which early application is advised.

Useful websites such as Target Jobs and Bright Network are also recommended as resources.

In addition, opportunities in a wide range of sectors are available via 10000 Black Interns (deadline is 7 November 2021)

This is a time sensitive episode so listen now (that said, if you are listening beyond the deadlines, sign up for the mailing list of organisations you are interested in, where applicable, so you keep an eye on opportunities for the future).

053: 8 ways to improve your career prospects this academic year

It's a new academic year... new energy... new possibilities... and a great time to talk about what you could be doing this academic year to positively move things forward in your career development. And that's exactly what this episode focuses on today: 8 ways to improve your career prospects this academic year.

Whether you are new to uni... end of high school... a new graduate - lots here is applicable to you. One thing to remember however is that this isn't designed to be a list to overwhelm you. It's meant to do the opposite, so it's not a case of doing all of the things at the same time (some are quite contradictory actually so that would be tricky!)

Take one or two of the action points and apply it.

    We move.

    Let's go.

052: Why focusing on your career right now is important

052: Why focusing on your career right now is important

Have you ever considered when is the best time to focus on your career (it's development, prospects and possibilities)? Now... I'd say the answer is now ... and there's good reason for this.

"CAREER (according to the UK Career Development Institute) describes our journey through life, learning and work. We need actively to develop our careers to make the best of them. This process of career development takes skill as well as knowledge and the right attitude. Individuals need to work on career development skills throughout their lives."

With that definition, can you see why right now is a great time to focus on your career?

Topics covered in this episode include:

    • Definition of career
    • What career exploration night look like  (at any age and stage)
    • What  'long-term' career goals could encompass, practically speaking
    • Whether you can change your mind
    • Acknowledgement that career happiness and life happiness can go hand in hand

Whether you are entering sixth form, university, a year in industry, your first job after graduation or beyond - you'll recognise the importance of now when it comes to your career journey. Enjoy!

048: Exciting alternatives to university with Anna Morrison (Amazing Apprenticeships) & Conor Cotton (Not Going To Uni)

What are you intending to do after you finish school and / or what were the options you considered?

In the past few years, in the UK, there have been an increasing number of options about what young people can do after school... beyond the traditional full time university route.

In this conversation with Anna Morrison from Amazing Apprenticeships and Conor Cotton from Not Going to Uni - we are reminded about exciting alternatives to full time university.

Thinking about an apprenticeship? Degree apprenticeship? Gap year? Wondering if this is a good option for you?

... and if you are concerned about how your parents would feel about you taking an alternative route to the traditional university one - that topic is not only addressed in this episode but in summer 2021, Anna and Conor are launching a podcast called "The Parent Perspective" so look out for that too.

Remember - if you have found this episode useful, do share it with at least one friend.

002: 3 Must Haves for Job Seekers

It's important not to take anything for granted so in these first few episodes of the Dive Into Your Career fundamental we are re/visiting some of the fundamentals as it's important not to make assumptions about where your knowledge levels "should" be. It's that kind of judgement that can mean some of the foundational steps are missed.

    Don't miss the basics!

In this episode, Gina Visram talks about what she considers to be the 3 Must Haves for job seekers.
