Earth Week Series: Working Toward Zero Waste

Earth Week Series: Working Toward Zero Waste

BONUS EPISODE (Part 3 of 3) – Waste not, want not, right? We’ve all heard the phrase “zero waste,” but what does that mean for venues and how can they be zero waste facilities? Venues are surge facilities, with thousands of patrons purchasing food and merchandise that have byproducts that need to go somewhere. For our final part of our Earth Week Series, we’re joined again by Brianna Treat, Director of Sustainability at Climate Pledge Arena and the Seattle Kraken, for a chat all about zero waste – which boils down to diverting at least 90% of your waste away from a landfill. How is that possible and how do you get there? Brianna explains Climate Pledge Arena’s strategies and how they are working to hit an even more challenging goal of diverting 95% of their waste. From color-coding waste bags to doing trash audits and sorting, discussing waste options with haulers to understanding what materials are sold – we roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty talking about tips for venues to divert more waste away from landfills. While 90% may not be possible for some, this episode is full of creative solutions and interesting strategies that could be deployed at any venue, no matter where currently are with their sustainability efforts.

"We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly." - Anne Marie Bonnea

Earth Week Series: Carbon Overview for Venues

Earth Week Series: Carbon Overview for Venues

BONUS EPISODE (Part 2 of 3) – Now that we’re a little more versed in venue sustainability, let’s dive a bit deeper and learn all about carbon. For Part 2 of our Earth Week Series we’re joined again by Brianna Treat, Director of Sustainability at Climate Pledge Arena and the Seattle Kraken, and we're talking all things carbon! What is it? How do you track it? What does carbon look like in a venue? We dig into all these questions and more, and hear all about what Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions are. Brianna explains Climate Pledge Arena’s commitment to being net zero carbon annually - ahead of the Paris Agreement. We discuss the Zero Carbon Certification, the most stringent carbon certification, which is through the International Living Future Institute. From renewable energy, to tracking merchandise and food, to offsetting performer and fan travel – we get into the weeds on carbon counting. Tracking and measuring data is not only the best first step, but a way to highlight the importance of sustainability to owners and C-suite executives.

“Overall, becoming a carbon-neutral country would involve changes in our behaviour, but these are modest compared with the changes that will be forced upon us if we do nothing.” - Caroline Lucas

Green Chemistry: Designing for a Sustainable Future

Green Chemistry: Designing for a Sustainable Future

Green chemistry aims to anticipate toxicity and global climate change. Green chemistry is an area of chemistry that focuses on reducing pollution and building a more sustainable world. John explains, "What you may be surprised to learn is that if you look at the curriculum, if you look at the classes that a chemist takes from the very beginning to getting a Ph.D., very few, if any, universities have within that curriculum, any skills, any ability to predict, ‘Will this molecule be toxic? Will this molecule hurt the environment?’ Of the massive curriculum that is chemistry, what has been missing is that. So if you put a box around that and say, ‘What are the skills necessary to anticipate toxicity, global climate change, energy use, all the things that we define as sustainability issues, the molecular mechanisms necessary to address them?’ That is the body of what is called green chemistry."

Building a sustainable future needs to be collaborative. We're all in this together when it comes to building a sustainable future. John explains, "Over time, the two aspects of industry and industry have not become closer together but have actually become a little bit further apart. At the very time we need innovation, at the very time we need creativity to solve these sustainability problems, both aspects of the chemical enterprises are not coming together. So, in an ironic way, the closed-loop metaphor works against us. So this Mobius strip, interesting enough, if you look at it in a certain way, it looks like an infinity symbol, bringing and showing that we're all in this together, and this has to be a collaboration."

Green chemistry gives us the tools to put sustainability into motion. The desire for sustainability is not enough to make the necessary change. We also need to have the right tools. John says, "You can't achieve sustainability goals just by wanting them. There's a skillset that is required in the lab that will then bring about the technologies and the materials to achieve those goals, and so the relationship between green chemistry. You can have all the regulations in the world, you can have all the desires in the world, but if you don't have the ability to meet those desires, you just got a lot of sad people, and so we need to have green chemistry to move from talking about this stuff to actually doing it."

Earth Week Series: The Climate Pledge Arena Story

Earth Week Series: The Climate Pledge Arena Story

BONUS EPISODE (Part 1 of 3) – It’s Earth Week, which means it’s the perfect time to dig into the impact venues and the live event industry have on our beautiful planet. As we discuss innovations and solutions around venue sustainability, we take an inside look at a venue which is prioritizing this on a level never seen before – Climate Pledge Arena. For Part 1 of our Earth Week Series, we chat with Brianna Treat, the Director of Sustainability at Climate Pledge Arena and the Seattle Kraken, to hear all about the Climate Pledge Arena story – what set them on the path of prioritizing green initiatives and how they continue to face and find solutions to solve challenges. We hear about what is involved with being a part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge, and what it means to be a Director of Sustainability. This newly reopened venue (renovated from a historic arena built in 1962 for the World’s Fair) not only strives to be a leader in venue sustainability, but also to blaze the trail to make it easier for all venues to prioritize and initiate green initiatives. This is a great first step in our series to learn some terms and hear about the many ways venues can be more sustainable.

"We shouldn't just sit idly by on the sidelines, waiting for other people to develop the technologies and the business models that can help decarbonize our operations.” - Daniel Gross

E29 - Earth Day Focus - The History of Earth Day, When Did It Start and Why It Is Important

Episode 3 - The History of Earth Day

Our planet is an amazing place, but it needs our help to thrive! That’s why each year on April 22, more than a billion people celebrate Earth Day to protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation. By taking part in activities like picking up litter and planting trees, we’re making our world a happier, healthier place to live.

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. Rallies took place across the country and, by the end of the year, the U.S. government had created the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe.

You can celebrate and protect the planet at the same time. Check out these Earth Day ideas to help save the planet any time of year.

    BE A PLANET HERO!

    • In its lifetime, one reusable bag can prevent the use of 600 plastic bags.

    • Recycling one can of soda will save enough energy to power a tv for three hours.

    • Shutting down a computer when it's not in use cuts the energy consumption by 85 percent.

    • For every mile walked instead of driven, nearly one pound of pollution is kept out of the air.

The theme for this years Earth Day Celebrations is "Invest in our planet"

Think about what you can do differently to make this earth better than before!  The world's largest retailer is removing all plastic bags at the checkout on April 22 - this will catch some customers off guard, potentially leading to impatient customers, complaints, and inconveniences - when a step forward in reducing waste impacts your daily routine - how do you respond?  We will see right!

How 10% Effort Does More than 100% When It Comes to Sustainability

How 10% Effort Does More than 100% When It Comes to Sustainability

Based on what your social and news feeds look like, Earth month (April) can conjure up tough emotions of distress and hopelessness. What else would we expect when the dates meant to honor the earth are swallowed up by the very true messaging that we’re on course for climate disaster within our lifetime?

But, without sweeping this crisis under the rug, without forgetting the scary things, like corporations’ majority responsibility for Earth destruction, I’d like to create space to focus on the good. I want to focus on how wonderful it is to be able to love our Earth mother through small, sustainable acts of kindness, and feeling like we are enough so that we may be of better service to the outer world.

"Deliciously Sinful" - Brand Sustainability in the Age of Impulse Luxury (w/ Ingrid Milman)

"Deliciously Sinful" - Brand Sustainability in the Age of Impulse Luxury (w/ Ingrid Milman)

Ingrid Milman (Ann Taylor, LOFT) sits in this week in our Earth Week deep-dive to discuss sustainability, transparency in supply chain, and "deliciously sinful" luxury impulse buys. Who has the true influence on the eco-conscious purchase decision - the brand or the consumer? How can fashion lead the conversation in transparent supply chain and manufacturing processes? Featured brands this week: Outdoor Voices, Rent the Runway, Reformation, H&M, Allbirds and more. Listen now!

    Show Notes:

    Main Takeaways:

    • Director of Digital at Ann Inc, Ingrid Millman, is co-hosting this week.

    • Earth Day has turned into Earth Week and, there are lots of sustainability stories to share.

    • Can rental Services like Rent the Runway find a way to make dry-cleaning more eco-friendly?

    • Instagram ads somehow turned Phillip into a sneakerhead.

Earth Day Becomes Earth Week: Capitalizing on Saving The Planet:

Everything is Re-sellable in 2019: People Are DIYing Marie Condo:

    • Ingrid is obsessed with the Marie Condo effect and the results from its popularity.

    • There's been a surge in the number of people utilizing both physical thrift stores, and online platforms like Poshmark, thredUP, and luxury re-sell platforms like The RealReal.

    • Ingrid points out that there needs to be a change to the way these resell platforms operate: namely that there needs to be more of a focus on creating solutions for their customers. As of now, there's not a lot of value proposition outside of general resell.

    • Phillip doesn't know if he trusts the resale market, and questions if perhaps if companies are posing as third-party sellers.

    • Phillip also blames Instagram for turning him into a sneakerhead, because Instagram forces him to buy an insane amount of sneakers through their targeted advertising.

    • Has retail followed more of a meme culture than an influencer culture?

    • Ingrid makes a fascinating point: Many people develop their actual sense of style in High School and/or college, but they cannot usually afford to outfit that style entirely, but people in their 30's are targeted by luxury brands more because they have a wholly different purchasing power, and now can make "deliciously sinful" luxury purchases.

Sustainability as a Search Term: Will Legacy Brands Adapt?

    • Ingrid has noticed a trend with Google search terms, including sustainability, cotton fiber, dress garments, and for some reason the brand Free People.

    • Phillip poses a question regarding sustainability: Do consumers care about sustainability because of the PR push that the brands they trust are putting out? Or are brands increasing their PR around sustainability because they know their customer care about it?

    • Ingrid makes a great point that GenX and anyone near that age group cares less about sustainability because it's not on their radar, as opposed to millennials (and anyone under 35), who may make sustainability a key focus of their purchasing choices.

    • If legacy brands want to pick up a younger customer, then they are going to have to put a much larger focus on sustainability efforts.

    • This is especially true considering how many younger brands are beginning their brands with eco-friendly products like Allbirds.
