Welcome to elite six business networking Think Tank, facilitated by your host, Danny de Hek. The place where decision makers come together to share their experience, knowledge and skill.

Okay, well, let's get the meeting underway with the SEC 92. Maybe we should

maybe we should say hello, first everyone. Should we do the audit? Now? What are we gonna see, I'm gonna click more buttons and just get rid of a few extra screens.

But lots of names on here. Everyone's getting busy at the moment, I had a guy who sent me a lovely request to come along to his event on LinkedIn. I said, Why don't we get together have a meeting? And tell me about it? Because I'm a bit busy at the moment. I said, So am I good luck with your event. But everyone's busy me.

    Paul Starling 0:50
    Yeah.

    Danny de Hek 0:54
If you really want people to come to the event, you don't just sort of give them a long email and measure we can just live life like that as you want I want out of my business is I just want lots of clients using my services, what, just put that all on one big email and send it to everybody. And then when they're not busy, they can read it and give me money.

    just brilliant.

    David Clarkson 1:16
Adds like an ideal solution, Danny.

    Danny de Hek 1:21
And the guy doesn't remember it was really funny, but he's an accountant. This guy and he's been watching me on LinkedIn for a wall and I don't know from our site, but I was out mountain biking with a group of about 15 or 20 people we were walking through McCain's Island. I know we were biking and there was a big group of people and we're blocking the track and he comes fast on his mountain bike and yells out Get out of the way and afterwards at the coffee coffee place I went up to him I said you know those your language was atrocious. I said you didn't need to talk to us like that. We just having a good time and then you can find pass with that. I said just get a hold of the woman. Oh, well, I shouldn't be on the track and and he doesn't realise I know he's the same accountant.

Anyway, you've got to be hate yourself all the time. It would

    David Clarkson 2:19
be a Rick. Danny recommend him to the clients you don't want. Yeah.

Danny de Hek: [00:00:00] Welcome to ELITE : SIX  business networking think tank facilitated by your host, Danny, to hit the place where decision makers come together to share their experience, knowledge and skill.

Really good meeting today. It's on organisation. A lot of people have got some good advice and they want to share it with you. So without further ado, lets start the meeting, ok guys.

So welcome along to the think tank meeting, we will start the meeting. Now we'll do a meeting thing. Today is personal organisation, things that you use to help.

Yourself, stay , maybe electronically, maybe a piece of paper on the desk. Anything that all that you can think you can help some other people with, if you haven't been to. I think tank meeting before we break it into four parts people's experiences with trying to organise himself, problems that people are having with organisation and then solutions.

And obviously some takeaways at the end of the meeting. And then we come up with next week's topic, which is quite groovy. So I was good,  what I'd like to do first is we've got our group of people here, so let's have a introduction of who you have. Cause, last week I think I told you guys, which you have 150 listeners to our podcast and in seven days, which is really good.

So people that are listening are probably wondering who is actually on this podcast. I'll start at the top. My top might not be your top. Does that make sense, Paul, do you want to introduce who you are and what you do?

Paul Starling: [00:01:24] Yep. I'm Paul stalling. I run Canterbury Computer Services in Rangiora, and we are a residential break fix. And look after small businesses and their computing needs and providing solutions for them.

Danny de Hek: [00:01:38] The majority of your customers would be using PCs. Would that be correct?

Paul Starling: [00:01:42] Yes. Majority is windows and Android and a few Apple customers.

Danny de Hek: [00:01:48] They're very few Apple. They don't break down. You'll see

Paul Starling: [00:01:52] They won't deal with the boys like us.

Danny de Hek: [00:01:55] My dogs go Apple, by the way, just in case, you're wondering, Helen do I know

Helen Oakes: [00:01:59] This is April I dog, and he's really good on Apple products areas. I'm Helen  Mode de vie Photography, creating memories to laugh last, a lifetime. Do you like that catch phrase?

Danny de Hek: [00:02:14] It catches you stool. Excellent. yeah, maybe at one age, I want to know a little bit more about you too. You guys are married or you just happened to be in the same screen every month.

Jaline Pietroiusti: [00:02:26] Yes, we are married and we do work together.

Danny de Hek: [00:02:30] Oh, sorry. This is

Jaline Pietroiusti: [00:02:35] Surprisingly. Everybody thinks I would end up in divorce, but

    EXPERIENCES

    • Refunding clients that overpay
    • Act honourably
    • Successful businesses who are acting ethically will always enhance their reputation
    • Reputation can be damaged
    • Your ethics should relate to the culture of your business
    • When clients advise that they no longer wish to be a client , any subsequent subscription payments should be refunded. If alternatively the member continues to pay and does not advise that they no longer want to be a member any refund should only cover from date of that advice.
    • Ethics in business is related to your own ethics. Conduct yourself as you feel is correct.
    • The values we apply to functioning within our business.

    PROBLEMS

    • Admin takes time
    • May not get repeat clients if you aren’t ethical
    • Are ethics related to the emotional center and conduct of your business or related to the systems your customers experience?
    • Terms and conditions need to be clear
    • Some companies don’t have T&C’s, can backfire
    • Ethics are in the eye of the beholder – what’s ethical to somebody may well be not be to another.

    SOLUTIONS

    • Have an admin fee if people overpay
    • Make phone call to clients not emails as emails get overlooked
    • Have a contract for a certain timeframe
    • Have clear Terms and Conditions, including around termination and refunds.
    • Pause before you react to situations to ensure your reaction matches your ethics.

    TAKES AWAY

    • Ethical decisions can be difficult to resolve – a good guide is to treat others as we’d like to be treated.
    • Give the money back
    • Hearing people views
    • After all, time will help heal your heart

    EXPERIENCES

    • If you personally are prone to anxiety or depression, then you actively need to build up a network of supportive people around you.
    • Problem shared is a problem solved
    • While there often is no apparent reason for someone to take their own life; there can be prior subtle signs. We need to listen carefully if we are close to them.
    • We don’t talk about it, but there is no harm if you do
    • People taking their life when they feel there is no way out
    • Celebrate all the successes no matter how big or small they are
    • I've found its so important to have "something" I do for me... once a week I try to have a coffee date with a friend & that's my me time, download. It's great if they are in business & you can download together then just chat..
    • Being sad, angry, hurt is ok. There is nothing wrong with those emotions.
    • You never say the words I know exactly how you're feeling, because it's impossible to know how someone is feeling a nicer way to say this would be to say I can only imagine what you were going through at the moment.

    PROBLEMS

    • Alcohol drinking too much drinking when you are low.
    • Avoid alcohol around stress. Have to look carefully at problem and booze interferes.
    • Entrepreneur can be perfectionist
    • Having that attitude of I can do this is so important
    • Comparing ourselves to others is not productive
    • We can create our own stress when often we find later it's misplaced.
    • Having no one to talk to
    • Getting useless information from well meaning people.
    • False modesty and unwillingness to admit failure.

    SOLUTIONS

    • Do some Physical Exercise

Different Ways to Communicate Effectively… Verbal, Written, Oral, Face-to-Face, Nonverbal, Physical, Paralanguage and Visual

    EXPERIENCES

    • Everyone has at least two languages – their native language and their body language.
    • Gauge your audience. Communicate to suite
    • Even those hard conversations should be tackled sensitively and with calmness
    • Don’t shy away from courageous conversations; giving strong feedback or bad news

    PROBLEMS

    • Wasting Time
    • Misunderstandings if not clear
    • Miscommunication never ends well. Be clear & concise
    • Key concept about communication is to focus on your clients needs rather than our own needs.
    • Being pressured when you don’t have time to consider your response or get the facts

    SOLUTIONS

    • Always be “in the now” when communicating with your clients – focus while you are communicating – multitasking interferes with communication.
    • Listening and play back what they said
    • Recognise that different mediums require different communication styles often
    • Get confidence by doing and getting feedback
    • CAUTION: This message has been composed by a dyslexic person using voice recognition, over bluetooth, with predictive texting enabled. So, who knows if it is 100% accurate. If in doubt phone me on 021 961 652

    EXPERIENCES

    • Forced everyone to embrace digital technologies such as “Zoom”.
    • The Seven R’s of Change Management Who raised the change? … What is the reason for the change?… What return is required from the change? … What are the risks involved in the change? … What resources are required to deliver the change? … Who is responsible for the “build, test, and implement” portion of the change?
    • Don’t mistake compliance for acceptance. People who are overwhelmed by continuous change resign themselves to it and go along with the flow. You have them in body, but you do not have their hearts. Motivation is low
    • Fear of the unknown make people fearful of change
    • The businesses that can react quickly and meaningfully to external factors will succeed.
    • To make change a new normal
    • To make change possible you must have the buy in and authority of the most senior manager.
    • Only make changes based on good data, not on a gut feeling.

    PROBLEMS

    • Changing without analysing why
    • Not managing the change
    • Making a change without accurate data
    • Lack of communication around the reasons for change

    SOLUTIONS

    • Systems and Processes
    • Focus has to be on the people implementing and being effected by change as well as the desired outcome.
    • Monitoring
    • Communicating you are trustworthy
    • Be transparent. Clarify with clients and or staff as to the reason for the change and the expected advantages that will come from it.
    • Been a great leader

    TAKES AWAY

    • Change involves risk, so change management involves risk management
    • Those with the most to lose as a result of the change will be the most resistant to the change
    • About Donald trump’s Whitehouse a great (if disturbing) read is “Fire and Fury” by Michael Wolff.

ELITE : SIX Think Tank meetings are discussed over ZOOM with our members every Friday at 9:30am.

Facilitated by DANNY : DE HEK meetings are recorded for our Podcast, we’ve been doing this since COVID-19 if you’re interested in joining in with us check out our Website at dehek.com

Certainly been a hard week on all of us, but we made it to Friday! ELITE : SIX has reinvented the way we are running our Business Networking company!

If you watch this you may get some good ideas, some creative ways that you could employ some new thinking and perhaps some new services you can offer people instead of sitting there and dwelling on the negative aspects of the Coronavirus.

    Topic was Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The one-step to resolving the CORVID-19 hysteria

There is one ingredient to shifting the lives of those being disrupted and the scenes of panic buying: give them certainty in the form of an absolute.

Friday’s Think Tank meeting had two clear points: emotion and leadership. The two are opposites.

The panic or mass buying of non-essential items is pure emotion. Emotion is driven by uncertainty.

So much of what we hear around CORVID-19 is pure uncertainty.

Leadership provides certainty. Certainty on the next step. Where the next step is. Something to aim for. Even if you don’t know what the next step is and you are leader of your family or business, deliver something that is certain. Deliver something absolute. Something that is near tangible.

    Examples:

    ·      A date (which may change),
    ·      A time (which may change),
    ·      A location (which may change),

People need to know and now. Knowing and certainty creates safety. Safety diffuses emotion. Fear subsides. Rational thinking and action resumes. Life is now focussed on there being a next step

If your boat is sinking and you’re telling your passengers ‘we will be okay’ will only work if there is a lifeboat they can see – the absolute.

Deliver the absolute in your message.

Now more than ever we look back at history and recount some of the statements issued in grave depression or war time. Now is the time to use history as our teacher and deliver what worked then. It will work now.

“We shall draw from the heart of suffering itself the means of inspiration and survival.” – Winston Churchill.
