Limited Appeal - Def Bird 2000
We hope you will enjoy listening to this episode! Back in the day, I guess. Nope, that doesn't really work, does it? T-Bone heard somewhere that birds can regenerate damaged hearing. It's not clear if we're talking about birds from rock concerts or those near other loud birds. But whatever the cause, it's quite cool they might give us clues for regenerative human hearing! Whether this leads to infinite numbers of heads remains unclear. If you think there's a topological difference between a water cup and a flatworm, let us know via email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Theme music courtesy of General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners and Ipecac Recordings.

ERIN KREBS: a pure voiced jazz vocalist who just might be the genre's best-kept secret

ERIN KREBS: a pure voiced jazz vocalist who just might be the genre's best-kept secret

Jazziz Magazine once wrote of jazz vocalist Erin Krebs, "She might be a best-kept secret of her native Wisconsin.” Marc Golde called her "an education in jazz." Erin is that good. And not only does she shine singing jazz, she's also one of the most talented blues and soul singers you'll ever hear. Whether she's duetting with guitarist Jeff Johnston or performing with a small combo or even a jazz orchestra, Erin will grab your attention with one of the purest voices you'll come across. It's time to sit back and get to know Erin Krebs.

Who Is The Best Singer of All Time?

Who Is The Best Singer of All Time?
Len and Beave talk through the latest Facebook bracket, which asks the Diamond Listeners to pick the best singer of all time. What constitutes a great singer? Is Bob Dylan a great singer? Why aren't Kenny Rogers or Huey Lewis in this bracket? Beave struggles to name the #1 seeds in the bracket, while guessing the #2 seeds instantly. The studio audience in Woodridge, IL heckles some of the omissions from the bracket, to everyone's surprise. Len makes some last-second switches to the bracket, and the singers who were cut express their displeasure through multiple faxes to Beave. Tune in for musical learnings.

The True Story of Marilyn Monroe, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Mocambo Club

The True Story of Marilyn Monroe, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Mocambo Club

It’s been widely reported that Marilyn Monroe catapulted jazz great Ella Fitzgerald’s career by personally calling the owner of the Mocambo Club in Los Angeles to demand that Ella be booked there. Evidently, Fitzgerald couldn’t get her own gig at the club, and Marilyn promised that if she was booked, Marilyn herself would show up every night and sit in the front row, ensuring massive press for the Mocambo. Even Ella herself has told this story. It’s been used as the storyline for what a great civil rights activist Marilyn was.

But did it actually happen? Did Marilyn Monroe really call the owner of the Mocambo Club to get Ella Fitzgerald a job there? Did she promise to show up for Ella’s show every night and sit in the front row? Tune in to find out.  Spoiler alert: It couldn’t possibly have happened the way it’s been reported.

On this episode of All Things Marilyn, Scott and Elisa are joined by Hollywood Historian and author April VeVea. April has authored a book on Jayne Mansfield titled Puffblicity: An Appreciation of Jayne Mansfield: The 50s Pictures, and on Monroe, Marilyn Monroe: A Day in The Life. As part of April’s research through the years, she’s discovered some very interesting facts about old Hollywood, including the truth behind the infamous story about Monroe, Fitzgerald and the Mocambo Club.

The Timelesness Of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band's "Cherchez La Femme"

The Timelesness Of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band's "Cherchez La Femme"

It was 1976, and Disco was hot. While Donna Summer, Barry White, Gloria Gaynor, and the Salsoul Orchestra churned out the genre's early standards, there were also your usual oddities in the shelves, from the overtly sexy to the downright novelty. Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band was neither, and in fact, they weren't even Disco. However, their carefree lyrics and tight danceable musicianship fit beautifully with the times.

Co-founded by brothers August Darnell (aka Kid Creole) and Stony Browder Jr., Dr. Buzzard's drew influences from the big-band and swing eras, as well as Soul, Latin, Jazz, and African sounds, and came up with a fresh and lush fusion that was ready for the funky feet.

At its very core was the sensual, silky and exuberant voice of Cory Daye, who was more than happy to stay in the background and let the men call the shots. That was, of course, until they buckled under pressure and Cory had no choice but to step out front, give life to August’s lyrics of the “tragic mulatto” and Stony’s dazzling arrangements, and in the process, create one of the most enchanting postcards of the early Disco years.

Note: In the episode we mention that Stony Browder Jr. passed on in 1991. He actually passed on in 2001.

Ivan Lins.

Urpeko Bonbarda, Anartz Bilbao gidari duen musika saioa.

Laugarren saio honetan azken errepasoa emango diogu 2020ko diskoei, honakoan arreta emakumeek ondutako jazzean jarrita.

Urteko Onenen zerrendetan gailurrean izan dira entzungo ditugun lanetako batzuk. Maria Schneiderren "Data Lords" ezin dotoreagoarekin abiatuko dugu saioa, eta Laura Jurd tronpeta joleak gidatzen duen Dinosaur laukoteak emango digu segida. Pop arima duen Laila Biali entzungo dugu gero, apur bat berezixeagoak diren bi lani bidea eman baino lehen. Ethno jazza jorratzen duen Thana Alexa bata, eta sustrai beltzak dituen Jyoti bestea. Afrikar doinuak aipatzen hasita, Sheila Maurice-Grey buru duen Kokoroko.

Molde klasikoan emandako bi kantu jarraian, atzera begirakoan emana bata, Ella Fitzgerald zenak Berlinen emandako zuzeneko bat plazaratu izanari esker batetik, eta itzal handiko musikari emakumez osatutako Artemis zazpikoteak emana bestea, "If It´s Magic", Steve Wonderren kantuaren berrirakurketa.

Bukatu baino lehen, gitarren txanda, eskarmentu handiko Kate Westbrook kantariaren bandaren eta itzal handiko Mary Halvorson gitarra jole gaztearen kantu banarekin. Eta azkenik, etxeko ordezkari, Haizea Martiartu saxofoi jolea, betiko euskal kantu batzuk jazz moldean berrirakurri dituena.

Eta gainera, Goizalde Landabaso kazetariak aspaldi-aspaldi Berria egunkarian idatzitako zutabe bat: "Shakespeare, punk, jazz".
