🚪 After an 11 year hiatus, and a seemingly sound conclusion to the original Scream trilogy, Scream 4 (or SCRE4M) quietly sauntered into theatres with little to no marketing. As a result, it received a remarkably underwhelming box office intake which seemed to pump the brakes on any onward momentum for immediate future sequels. No matter how you feel about Scream 4 though, it can be argued that even this franchise's low points, which are few and far between, are way above the cut of any of the other heavy hitting horror franchise (mostly due to Wes Craven's talents as a filmmaker). So in this episode, we dive into the fourquel to discuss what we liked, what we didn't like, what could have been done differently to make this a more successful movie, what makes this one stand out from the rest, and as always, we'll be choosing which character we think was most deserving to die.

Melvin & Dan talk about one of Mel's favorite movies, The Blackcoat's Daughter, perhaps the most painstakingly slow burning, brooding mood slashers ever made. Also, Melvin gets really honest about why he loves The Blackcoat's Daughter so much.

• Melvin has wanted Daniel to watch The Blackcoat's Daughter since they started the podcast. Finally, it happened. 
• The Blackcoat's Daughter shows various aspects of alienation, loneliness, and general social dysfunction despite its small cast. 
• Despite The Blackcoat's Daughter being set at a spiritually indistinguishable denominational school, an aesthetic choice likely chosen to add flavor to the horror, Melvin finds himself deeply connecting with the general atmosphere present within the film. 
• The structure of The Blackcoat's Daughter is extremely subtle, with even its timeline giving small yet pivotal narrative clues. 
• Daniel read that Ozgood Perkins wanted the film to be about loneliness, which as stated before clearly comes through the film.

• When either a secular or religious person has no support system, they are prone to fill the void of community, companionship, and intimacy with risky and dangerous solutions often because those are easier or simpler to implement than an entire social structure. 
• Melvin feels The Blackcoat's Daughter displays a convincing, gentle, yet clear perspective as to why one may be attracted to evil, and he feels the film can help bring a sense of clarity and compassion toward an otherwise contentious subject matter.
• There's a really strong dream-like logic to The Blackcoat's Daughter in which things don't necessarily make real-world sense but heavily improve the film's overall tone.
• Daniel, "Helping somebody who's [overtly] choosing something other than God; that's a tough one. Because there's something about the thing they're choosing that calls to them uniquely."
• Melvin, "In terms of [The Blackcoat's Daughter], a resolution to loneliness is companionship. But learning... learning to be a good friend is hard."

It's the end of a season and an era. In our final episode of 2020 we discuss Holidate the Emma Robert's vehicle written by Tiffany Paulsen and directed by John Whitesell!

It's our final Christmas Edition movie, and what an infuriating note to end on! So many questions, so little time. Like who invented the term Holidate, Netflix or Twitter? Was Paulsen getting paid per time anyone said holidate?why does this movie feel longer than The Goldfinch? And how could Tiffany slip so low after 2007 classic Nancy Drew?

The "Scream" Series. It has been a journey, and it all ends here with "Scream 4." And Aleigh has never seen it because she's a full mess. It's a solid mainstream horror movie with some good old fashioned Ghostface slasher fun, but for a new generation. We have a good time watching it and you probably will too. Especially if you pair it with our final wine in the 19 Crimes series called The Uprising. We thought it would be a good fit because it's young kids rising up against their elders. Those no-good good-for-nothin' kids.

Movie Sync Notes: We watched the movie on Hulu with a standard subscription. We start "Scream 4" 6:15 into the pod, and push play on part two 1:10:49 into the pod.

Apologies to Sydney: Chelsea and Monica talked a lot of shit, but as it turns out they just might have some love for Scream 4 (2011). We're closing out the Scream franchise as we talk about how the last installment stacks up against the original trilogy, how much we love Queen Kirby, and what we're hoping to see in Scream 5. 

In this first episode of Nick Nack Goes To The Movies, I dive in and break down my initial reaction to all 9 seasons and 103 episodes of the Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk horror anthology series, American Horror Story.  For veterans fans of the series or those who are looking for a new show to binge during quarantine, this podcast has it all (SPOILER ALERT UPFRONT)!

The show is available to stream on Hulu and Netflix (Hulu has AHS 1984 while Netflix ends with Apocalypse as of right now).
