The Exiles Return - The Books of Ezra, Haggai, Daniel, Jeremiah, & Ezekiel

The Exiles Return - The Books of Ezra, Haggai, Daniel, Jeremiah, & Ezekiel

In this Bible Story, God’s people are freed from the empire of Babylon and Persia to return home. The exiles journey back to the home of their forefathers. There they rebuilt the temple, and attempted to rebuild their broken hearts. This story is inspired by Ezra 1-6 & Haggai 1-2. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Ezra 3:7 from the King James Version.

Episode 168: Cyrus King of Persia, had conquered all that was once Babylon. Because of this, he had learned from King Darius the stories of Daniel’s God and his heart grew toward the exiles from Judah. So, in fulfillment of God’s Word through Jeremiah, he issued a decree that the exiles could return to Judah if they would like. It took over two years to wipe the dust and rubble from the ruined city. However, while Zerubbabel, one of the exiles returning from Babylon, was rebuilding the temple, he sent away his fellow Israelites. Creating enemies instead of unity. All of this showed that it was not just the city that needed to be rebuilt, but the hearts of the people as well.

    The Traveler - The Gospels

    The Traveler - The Gospels

In this Bible Story, we see Jesus revealing himself to two men on the road to Emmaus. They would pave the way for Jesus to come and reveal himself to the disciples. This story is inspired by Luke 24:13-45. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Luke 24:31 from the King James Version.

Episode 214: As two of the disciples of Jesus were walking to their home in Emmaus talking about the recent events in Jerusalem, a Traveler joined them. The Traveler asked them what was going on and they explained their astonishment and sense of tragedy at what happened to this man named Jesus that they thought might be the Messiah. Then the Traveler explained to them that this is what the scriptures said must happen. As they reached their destination, the three of them sat down for a meal. And as the Traveler blessed the meal and broke the bread, the men realized He was Jesus.

    Hope Born Out of Tragedy

    Hope Born Out of Tragedy

When we encounter difficult life situations, it’s natural and necessary to grieve our losses. We need time to process those events that result in changing circumstances or lost relationships. Despite an expectation that everything will be fine in the end, the moment of pain cannot be ignored, and having someone to sit with us and listen can be invaluable.

This is the kind of care Jesus offered a pair of disciples who were returning to Emmaus after witnessing the crucifixion of Jesus. They had lost their teacher, and their hope for salvation from the Romans was dashed. But Jesus appeared to them as they walked home, and he listened as they explained why they were so sad. In response, Jesus told them that they had more to be thankful for than they realized, then he explained why he had to be crucified and resurrected. Join us this Sunday as we reflect on this interaction with Jesus on the road to Emmaus and hope a new hope for salvation was born.

3rd Sunday of Easter: Father Persing

3rd Sunday of Easter: Father Persing

(April 23, 2023) Walking with God is part of our Christian experience.  That is our chance to encounter Christ, just like the two disciples had on their way to Emmaus. "We are not walking aimlessly and alone along the path of faith," Father Persing said. In those moments, "Jesus very patiently, very discreetly, very contently, continues to walk silently alongside of us."

    Easter 3: Thursday

Ep. 113 - The Road To Emmaus (Apr 23, 2023)

Ep. 113 - The Road To Emmaus (Apr 23, 2023)
Our Gospel is the famous story of the road to Emmaus. Two of Jesus’ followers are returning home after the tumultuous events of Holy Week only to encounter the Risen Lord Himself. We’ll look to an early Church historian to uncover the identity of the two disciples. Comparing our story to the Feeding of the Five Thousand we’ll note several parallels between the two and we’ll also spend some time exploring the objectively vulnerable nature of faith in Christ. Lastly, we’ll compare the Emmaus encounter with Adam and Eve’s sin in Genesis 3 and we’ll note key differences between the outcomes of the two stories. In this episode discover: - Who Eusebius, an early Church historian, identifies as the two disciples in our narrative (spoiler: they may have been relatives of Jesus) - A detail in our Gospel that would have fulfilled the Jewish requirement for credibility of legal witnesses - An interesting observation one Biblical scholar makes about Luke’s chronology and how it relates to the keeping of our modern-day liturgical calendar - Whether Jesus purposely prevented the disciples from recognizing Him or if something else was at play - How Josephus, a first century Jewish historian, describes Jesus and the similarities that description has with Cleopas’ - How the story of the road to Emmaus mirrors the twofold pattern of every Mass

    Rethinking Scripture Podcast

Episode 51: Acts 7 - The Gospel in the Story of Stephen

August 9, 2022 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall

In Acts 7, Stephen becomes the first of the "Christ-Followers" to be killed for his faith. And right before he dies he gives a long sermon that most readers just skip right over… because they think it’s not relevant. But for some reason, Luke under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, thought the details of this chapter important enough to include. Today, we’ll look at how Luke uniquely shares the good news of Jesus through the story of Stephen.
