Dan Shugar | Tracking our solar-powered future
In our final episode of 2023, we sit down with Dan Shugar, founder and CEO of Nextracker, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXT), a leading provider of intelligent, integrated solar tracker and software solutions used in utility-scale and distributed generation solar projects globally. With over 30 years of experience in the field, Dan has been a driving force in advancing climate tech solutions in the U.S. and around the world.
In the conversation with Gil, Dan reflects on Nextracker's incredible success over the past ten years, including its successful IPO earlier this year; they talked at length about the company's steadfast customer-focused mindset and how that has driven so many industry-first solar tracker innovations in their mission to transition the world to affordable, renewable power. Dan also talked about Nextracker's remarkable initiatives with U.S. manufacturing expansions over the past three years and the importance of public policy engagement for our industry. He also touched on a few non-U.S. markets that are key to his optimism for the future of solar power. We even found time at the end to have fun talking about great guitar music and his new musical products venture, AmpMojo.

The UK Energy Balancing Act: Net Zero and Energy Security
The United Kingdom (UK) has had to balance its net-zero ambitions with energy security after suffering from a price shock in 2021 that increased the cost of energy and forced them to stop importing Russian natural gas.
This week, Lord Martin Callanan, the UK’s Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance) at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, joins the podcast. His responsibilities include CCUS, hydrogen, green finance, energy efficiency, and emissions trading.
Here are some of the questions Jackie and Peter asked Lord Callanan: How do you respond to those that oppose the licensing of new North Sea oil and gas developments? Has the UK changed its policies or subsidies to compete with the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)? How can a carbon-market approach with price volatility compete against the certainty of the IRA-style, subsidy-based policy? How does the UK structure offshore wind, nuclear, CCUS, and hydrogen incentives to attract capital?

China’s Role in Critical Mineral Supply Chains
Critical minerals are non-fuel minerals or mineral materials essential to the economic or national security of the U.S. They have no viable substitutes yet face a high risk of supply chain disruption. Critical minerals are used for many different purposes, including the production of advanced electronics, weapons systems, manufacturing equipment, and cutting-edge medical devices. They are indispensable for the transition to low-carbon energy sources. Last year, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, with the aid of the U.S. Geological Survey, published a list of 50 critical minerals.
China dominates global critical mineral supply chains, accounting for approximately 60% of world-wide production and 85% of processing capacity. However, the U.S. and several European countries are taking steps to build out their own ability to mine, process, and manufacture critical minerals. To discuss the implications of China’s role in critical mineral supply chains and the responses of the U.S. and its partners, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Abigail Wulf, vice president and director of the Ambassador Alfred Hoffman Jr. Center for Critical Minerals Strategy at Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE), a non-profit advancing transformative transportation technology to enhance energy security.
