Episode 44: Jenn Shapland - THIN SKIN

Episode 44: Jenn Shapland - THIN SKIN
Jenn Shapland's first book, My Autobiography of Carson McCullers, was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award and the Southern Book Prize, and it won the 2021 Lambda Literary Award, the Judy Grahn Award, and the Christian Gauss Award. In her new essay collection, Thin Skin, Shapland explores the porousness of boundaries between humans and the environments we inhabit, between us and other people, and between us and the social constructs we create. What does it mean to be sensitive when we live in a toxic environment? How do we navigate the difference between taking responsibility and assuaging our guilt? Between resisting injustice and coping with it? And how do we reckon with what's happening in the world when no one wants to talk about it? Shapland answers these questions and more in this month's episode of Story Behind the Story. Special Guest: Jenn Shapland.

Episode 10 - Is My Child Getting the Nutrition They Need? featuring Dr. Jared Skowron

Episode 10 - Is My Child Getting the Nutrition They Need? featuring Dr. Jared Skowron

Attention, parents of picky eaters – this episode is for you.

Today, we talk about nutrition, specifically, how to ensure your child is getting the right carbs, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals, not only for their overall health, but also their muscle and brain functioning.

Our guest in this episode is Dr. Jared Skowron, who has been working with children who have autism and ADHD for 20 years. He specializes in using natural, non-pharmaceutical therapies to impact healthy neurological development. These treatments support language development, sensory function, sleep, emotional stability, behavior, and memory.

He also authored the Amazon bestselling book, 100 Natural Remedies for Your Child: The Complete Guide to Safe, Effective Treatments for Childhood’s Most Common Ailments, from Allergies to Weight Loss.

We’ve known Dr. Skowron for a long time, and here, we talk about the effects our diets have on our bodies’ functioning, and how to make positive changes through different natural supplements – plus, when to seek naturopathic care. (Hint. It was probably yesterday!)

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • How kids with developmental delays often are picky eaters due to sensory processing issues –  which is complicated by the fact that these kids might also be on special diets
    • The impact anxiety has on the foods children eat, and how to combat mood and anxiety issues through amino acid supplements – plus, which kind work best
    • Testing whether environmental toxicity is affecting children, and the different methods of detox treatment, or detoxification
    • Mitochondrial supplements (the big three) and the impact they have on the energy our muscles receive
    • Improving sleep among kids (turn off the lights/electronics!) and how to use melatonin supplements if there are still issues
    • Fish oil supplements, their components, their effects, and what to look out for

The Dangers of Sweeping Menstrual Health Under the Rug

The Dangers of Sweeping Menstrual Health Under the Rug
There’s a certain danger that comes with dismissing a young girl's complaints around menstruation. It’s hurtful to be disbelieved and it’s frustrating when you know something is not normal yet the doctors don’t find anything wrong and tell you it’s all “in your head”. Sweeping the problem under the rug leads to trouble down the road. Years later, some like Robin’s special guest, Eva Vennari are diagnosed with underlying chronic health conditions. It can be very discouraging to be diagnosed with a condition that doctors tell you that you will have to learn to live with for the rest of your life. Diagnosed with infertility at the age of 22, Eva grew frustrated with her doctors and started searching for solutions. After a 16 year journey, she was able to solve her health problems, regain her fertility and have three healthy children. In this episode, Eva shares what parents can do to help identify fertility issues while their girls are still young and help them to balance their hormones.
