It’s Difficult to Secure the Invisible: Reinventing Asset Management for Modern Challenges in IT, IoT, and OT | A RunZero Brand Story with Huxley Barbee

It’s Difficult to Secure the Invisible: Reinventing Asset Management for Modern Challenges in IT, IoT, and OT | A RunZero Brand Story with Huxley Barbee

In this Their Story podcast on ITSPmagazine, Huxley Barbee delves into the world of InfoSec and asset management, discussing the importance of having a full asset inventory and how his company, RunZero, addresses this challenge with a cyber asset management solution.

Founders HG Moore and Chris Kirsch identified the need for better tooling as security teams' scopes expanded beyond managing traditional IT devices to securing IoT and OT devices across various environments. RunZero helps organizations understand gaps in security controls coverage, identify potentially vulnerable devices in the face of zero-day threats, and more.

Huxley Barbee explains that a full asset inventory, including asset details like location within the network, device function, and business context, can assist in determining which vulnerabilities or misconfigurations need immediate attention. Huxley highlights the delicate process of gathering information on devices and the importance of incremental fingerprinting, particularly in OT environments and those with often-unmanaged IoT devices.

The trio also cover the business side, discussing the typical clients for RunZero and the mindset shift required to realize that existing asset discovery tools may not be sufficient. They discuss the collaboration between IT, OT, and security teams, emphasizing that having a full cyber asset inventory beyond the traditional IT asset inventory can help reduce remediation time and improve overall business decision-making.

Tune in to this episode to learn more about RunZero's modern approach to asset management, the crucial role of visibility in addressing security challenges, and how a robust asset inventory by RunZero can help businesses leaders and security practitioners make better decisions.

    Episode Introduction

Welcome to the Audio Signals Podcast; today's episode features an exciting conversation with Andy Clark, a philosopher and cognitive scientist from the University of Sussex. Andy's interests lie in understanding how minds work, and in this episode, we discuss his new book, The Experience Machine. The book delves into how our minds predict and shape reality and how we can control our predictions to a certain extent.

We start by exploring the idea that brains are prediction machines, and everything that our brains do can be understood by thinking of them as in the business of making predictions, not just about the world outside but also about our own bodies and future activities. As we discuss the premise of the book, we ponder over the question of how much control we have over our predictions and how much control others have over them. Andy's response to this is intriguing - we probably have a bit more control than we think, but not as much as we'd like.

We also explore the science and technology that allow Andy and others to bring this theory upfront. Andy shares that we're well beyond the stage of it just being a kind of idea. It's now a well-worked-out computational story about how predictions and sensory evidence are balanced by different bits of our brains. The theory is pretty well dominant, and we're hitting both the bases of having a theory and showing that brains like ours can actually do it.

So, sit back and enjoy this exciting conversation that will change the way you think about your mind, your predictions, and your reality. Don't forget to share and subscribe to the podcast, and invite your friends and family to join in on the fascinating journey of exploration and discovery.

    About the Book

Widely acclaimed philosopher and cognitive scientist Andy Clark unpacks this provocative new theory that the brain is a powerful, dynamic prediction engine, mediating our experience of both body and world. From the most mundane experiences to the most sublime, reality as we know it is the complex synthesis of sensory information and expectation. Exploring its fascinating mechanics and remarkable implications for our lives, mental health, and society, Clark nimbly illustrates how the predictive brain sculpts all human experience. Chronic pain and mental illness are shown to involve subtle malfunctions of our unconscious predictions, pointing the way towards more effective, targeted treatments. Under renewed scrutiny, the very boundary between ourselves and the outside world dissolves, showing that we are as entangled with our environments as we are with our onboard memories, thoughts, and feelings. And perception itself is revealed to be something of a controlled hallucination.

Unveiling the extraordinary explanatory power of the predictive brain, The Experience Machine is a mesmerizing window onto one of the most significant developments in our understanding of the mind.

SCHED’S ON SET: The Benefits Of Scheduled Instances To Generate Savings

IT’S TIME TO SAVE UP ON CLOUD COSTS.

HOW? BY CUTTING OFF SOME TIME.

Nick and Jason talk about savings in today’s episode. The duo introduces a no-cost, no-commitment, simple yet effective way to save by implementing scheduled instances. Nick and Jason explain and give us context on what schedule instances are and cite examples of how it applies to your cost. Learn more about this in the latest episode of Cloud Cost Optimization.

    WORDS TO OPTIMIZE YOUR DAY

NICK: THE SAVINGS YOU GET WITH SCHEDULED INSTANCES

“Just take this simple example of 10 hours a day, five days a week, so I got about 50 hours where there's an activity against that environment that's under 30% utilization. For the given weeks, I've got 70% of the time, I've got resources that are running that are costing me money, compute resources that are costing me money that I don't need to have running. So we're talking about immediately, sort of just round numbers 70% savings without any commitment, and the best savings vehicle I can get from a commitment-based strategy.”

#24 Social Identity (Part Two!) - Dr Matt Slater & Chris Hartley

#24 Social Identity (Part Two!) - Dr Matt Slater & Chris Hartley

Join me for the second in a two-parter we recorded last year - a conversation about Social Identity.  In fact, with the Euros in full swing, this is a great time to revisit the first part (here) as well as Gareth Southgate's recent interview on the High Performance Podcast (here).

Dr. Matt Slater from Staffordshire University and Chris Hartley from the University of Stirling spend a lot of time thinking about groups, identity and leadership.

Dr. Matt Slater is Associate Professor of Sport & Exercise Psychology at Staffordshire University, a chartered Psychologist and an active researcher with interests in the psychology of leadership and team functioning in performance contexts. He is also the Author of the book ‘Togetherness: How to Build a Winning Team’, published in 2019.

Chris Hartley is also a chartered and HCPC registered practitioner in sport and exercise psychology, and a Lecturer in sport psychology at the University of Stirling (Scotland, UK). His PHD research adopted a social identity theory perspective, where he aimed to understand how a social identity and the self-categorisation process underpins the provision and receipt of social support. Chris has also previously worked in performance academies, University Scholarship programmes, and consulted with several sport NGBs and a range of individual clients. He’s helped organise the 2nd International Conference on Social Identity in Sport (ICSIS) which took place in June 2019 in Stirling.

Matt and Chris join me for the SECOND part of the first ever group discussion on Slice of PIE - and we talk about identity, leadership, the transience of groups and the powerful wellness impacts of social groups amongst many other topics.

This is Part 2 of the discussion so make sure to check out Part 1 when you can.

Welcome back - it's our second episode!

Patterns and reliability of children's skin temperature prior to and during sleep in the home setting

Susan M McCabe, Catherine ElliottKatherine Langdon, Chris R Abbiss

    Abstract

The relationship between patterns of change in skin temperature and sleep is well recognised. In particular, there is a rapid rise in distal skin temperature (Tdistal) and slower rise in proximal skin temperature (Tproximal) prior to sleep onset. The difference between Tdistal and Tproximal is known as the distal-proximal gradient (DPG).

Rise in DPG is known as a measure of distal vasodilation, which contributes to the drop in core body temperature (Tcore) that is important to sleep onset and maintenance. Patterns of change in skin temperature before and during sleep are reported for neonates, infants, adults and elderly, however they are not known for school aged children. Therefore, the current observational study aimed to determine the patterns and reliability of skin temperatures (Tskin) and DPG in relation to sleep of school aged children in their home settings.

Participants (22 children, aged 6-12) completed the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire and used Thermochron iButtons and actigraphy for four school nights in their typical sleep settings. There were evident patterns of Tskin change before and during sleep. In particular, Tdistal was lower but rose more rapidly than Tproximal after reported bedtime and prior to sleep onset. This reflected a timely rise in DPG, and shows that distal vasodilation precedes sleep onset in school aged children.

The measures of Tskin and sleep were practical for children in their home settings, and the observed patterns were consistent across consecutive school nights. Environmental and behavioural strategies that manage skin temperature before and during sleep should be explored for their potential as valuable components of treatment of childhood insomnia.

Keywords: Distal and proximal skin temperatures; Natural environments; School-age children; Sleep onset.

Recorded in early September 2020, this episode is all about the way scents have become pins in the maps of our lives, harkening back to places, environments, and contexts that employ the likes of SpaghettiOs, automobile paint, garbage water, hot dog carts, and much more as odor anchors in our travels. #21 High performance in eSports - Ismael Pedraza

#21 High performance in eSports - Ismael Pedraza

My guest this week is Ismael Pedraza, or 'Isma'.

Isma is a performance psychologist working as a practitioner and researcher in Germany, who has come via Finland, Australia and his home country of Colombia where he played a high standard of football.

He’s currently the performance coach for Rogue, a professional eSports team in Europe that participates in the League of Legends European Championship. He is also on the managing council of ENYSSP, the European Network of Young Specialists in Sport Psychology. ENYSSP is a fantastic network for practitioners young and old, interested in sport and performance psychology and pre-COVID, their conferences were a key staple in the sport psychology calendar, based at stunning locations around Europe. See a link to ENYSSP below.

If like me, you are slightly in the dark about this juggernaut that is eSports, this discussion will be a useful eye opener in to the culture, language and pressures that exist in this environment.

#20 The long win - Cath Bishop

#20 The long win - Cath Bishop

In this episode I speak to Cath Bishop. A speaker, consultant, executive coach and author on developing success in leadership. Cath is also a former diplomat and former elite rower for Great Britain, representing at 3 Olympic games, achieving World Champion status twice as well as an Olympic Silver Medal in partnership with Dame Katherine Grainger in the coxless pair in Athens.

A cursory glance at Cath’s Wikipedia or LinkedIn might give you the impression of one word… SUCCESS. Yet it’s the notion of what is defined as success which sits at the heart of her new book The Long Win. Is success the outcome or the journey towards it? Is it the medals and quarterly targets or the skills and growth you gain along the way? And why is our culture obsessed with winning?

I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing Cath and getting deeper into some of the topics within the book. If you are interested I’ve left a link to the book in the description below, along with a host of other books I've read and have been recommended in the world of psychology, organisation culture, wellbeing and performance.

In our conversation we jump straight into the themes from the book and the implications for building psychologically informed environments. We only lightly touch upon Cath's own Olympic and athletic journey, but if you’d like to find out more I’d invite you to listen to Cath's interviews with Simon Mundie on Don’t Tell Me the Score and Steve Ingham on The Supporting Champions podcast to learn more.
