A Happy Hour Flix podcast | It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World with special guest Dana Snyder

A Happy Hour Flix podcast | It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World with special guest Dana Snyder

Hey everyone and welcome back to the Independent Filmmaker’s Guide

So a couple of weeks ago we launched our new podcast, Happy Hour Flix - where we sit down with a special guest and talk about a nostalgic film we love and love to talk about. And today we wanted to drop another one of our episodes from that podcast on this feed as another special treat. And as i said before if this feels like something you would also enjoy - we invite you to be sure and subto HAPPY HOUR FLIX as well. Links in the show notes – AND you can always just search HHF wherever you get your podcasts. Another regularly scheduled episode of IFG will also be dropping soon, so be on the lookout for that!

HAPPY HOUR FLIX is a podcast all about the movies we love and love to talk about. A nostalgic look at what we grew up watching and how they still impact us today. It's a lot of fun.

On today's episode, hosts Steven Pierce and Matt Mundy chat about a literal madcap star-studded classic, IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD. And to discuss all the outsized comedy, who better than Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s own, Master Shake, Dana Snyder.

Not only was this one of Steve’s favorite movies growing up, Dana reveals how obsessed he became with it, too - collecting original scripts, stashing away lore and stories from the film as deep as a true Trekky, and how so many of the comedians and actors featured were his own inspiration to go into entertainment.

As always, we invite you to grab a beverage and enjoy the stories, and reminisce with us. Our friends over at Misguided Spirits help us design and bring to you the perfect cocktail to enjoy alongside all our episodes.

This particular cocktail was designed by mixologist Lea Marie Logan from Belle Reve in NYC, aptly named after our guest: the MASTER SHAKE!

    Here's how you do it:

*a play on the cafe con leche flip

    1oz MISGUIDED spiced rum

    1oz kahlua

    .5oz heavy cream

    .5oz simple syrup

    1x Egg yolk

    …Shake aggressively with light ice

    Top with nutmeg

…Serve in a small styrofoam cup with a pink straw!

Sit back, relax and enjoy HAPPY HOUR FLIX!

A quick reminder, no matter where you are listening to us, if you could rate us and drop us a review on Apple Podcasts, we’d be so grateful - it really helps us spread the good vibes. Thank you!

HAPPY HOUR FLIX is produced by James Allerdyce and Lori Kay, and hosted by Steven Pierce and Matt Mundy.

Main Title is by Johnny Mineo.

IFG | How Movies Get Made

    022: Rampant on a Bösendorfer

    022: Rampant on a Bösendorfer
The world watched Amos and Edda have sex, thanks to a Belgian breaking news balloon, the kind of balloon that floats through the city of Brussels, filled with at least 10 reporters looking for news stories. And part of how they look for news, we guess, is to peep through windows of buildings and film people without their permission. Seems totally cool. But maybe that's just how "European" they are, and we're all a bunch of American yahoos. Whatever the case, the video (or film as Brooke Mac-El-D prefers to call it) becomes a sensation on the internet. But before that, Juliette, Seth, and some lady named Isabel all see the video/film of Amos and Edda fucking on a piano in a rehearsal space, thanks to the peeping reporters on the news balloon that somehow hovered outside their window for the entirety of their tryst. Edda sees the video/film on her laptop, but keeps Amos from viewing it or even knowing about it. So he is pretty confused when they're on the streets of Brussels and everyone they pass, literally everyone, is craning their necks to look at them. And by craning their necks we mean turning their heads literally completely around. The venue is packed, not "standing room only" as one would normally say, but "crammed to the exit signs." Sure. Amos gets nervous, gets the hiccups, and Edda gives him a look that says, "let's fuck," even though he is five minutes from taking the stage. And that's where we end this episode. (Part 2 of 3) The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: Juliette picks up the satellite broadcast from Brussels, tells Edda about it, and Edda is pleased Isabel has seen it are here (https://twitter.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1622303250262425600?s=20&t=oPfPgstnxF2LZLAsXti8lQ). Cocktails with Austin Pendleton: When is the kid gonna deliver?

Cocktails with Austin Pendleton: When is the kid gonna deliver?

Austin Pendleton, a Yale University graduate and ensemble member of the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, made his Broadway debut in 1964 as Motel in the original Broadway cast of Fiddler on the Roof. Other theatre credits include: Oh Dad, Poor Dad…, The Last Sweet Days of Isaac, The Diary of Anne Frank, Goodtime Charley, and Choirboy. He has made over 150 appearances in television and films including: What’s Up, Doc?, My Cousin Vinny, Mr. & Mrs. Bridge, Finding Nemo, The Muppet Movie, A Beautiful Mind, Catch-22, Skidoo, and 2 Days In The Valley. Pendleton wrote the plays Uncle Bob, Booth, and Orson's Shadow, all of which were staged off-Broadway. As a director, Pendleton has worked extensively both regionally and on and off-Broadway. His direction of Elizabeth Taylor and Maureen Stapleton in Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes garnered him a Tony Award nomination in 1981 and his 2011 direction of the off-broadway production of Three Sisters won him an Obie Award.  He currently teaches acting at HB Studio.

    1972's "Journey Back to Oz"

    1972's "Journey Back to Oz"

Tara and EmKay dive into the wonderfully wacky world of 1972's "Journey Back to Oz" and are ready to give Liza Minnelli's Dorothy and Ethel Merman's Mombi all the LOVE! Rabbit holes include the history of Filmation, the company that created the move, the long backstory of how the movie finally came to be, and your gingham gals' personal favorite (and not so favorite) moments!

*Please note, in this episode we explore the history of 1972’s "Journey Back to Oz," which in its later television syndication in 1976 unfortunately featured segments with Bill Cosby as the wizard.  This led to a conversation about Bill Cosby’s recently overturned sexual assault conviction and it’s damaging repercussions, diving deeper into the topic of sexual abuse and the recent documentary Allen v. Farrow.  We acknowledge the sensitivity and gravity of this subject and want to see our listeners who are survivors.  We will give another disclaimer before this part of the conversation for anyone who wants to opt out and skip ahead to 1:06:00.  Thank you.

    19 - Airplane! A 40th Anniversary Celebration

    19 - Airplane! A 40th Anniversary Celebration

In a special edition of Hollywood Unscripted, we celebrate one of the funniest movies of all time, Airplane! Host Scott Tallal is joined by producer, director and writer, David Zucker and star Robert Hays.

(0:48) They discuss how it all came together through the development of suburb north of Milwaukee, from starting an improv group at University of Wisconsin and how they moved it to LA

David discusses how the first idea took a year to write the script and that they had no budget (1:38) but John Landis came to see the improv show and how listening to and learning from John changed the direction of the movie

How a meeting at Paramount with Michael Eisner and Jeff Katzenberg ultimately was the key to getting the movie made.

David shares how their improv show inspired the movie and what types of ideas they were looking to spoof (2:54). And how Zero Hour shaped the direction and truly inspired the crafting of the script, including the importance of a character arc and a 3 act structure (4:30).

David continues to share how the movie came to being including how they finally got the rights (4:52) from Zero Hour and what a surprise it becoming a hit really was. David and Robert dicuss their thoughts on why it’s still a hit, including the jokes which are still funny today (6:05).

The truly team effort from Paramount and the help they received from the executives (6:45).

David shares the moment he found out the movie was greenlit and how Jerry and Jim also reacted (8:00) and the dramatic name changing of Jerry (11:00) to get the Director Guild of America to allow three people to direct a film.

Robert and David share what the first day of filming was like and how three white Jewish guys tried to write a joke about ‘speaking jive’ (12:08).

Is the movie and are the jokes over the line? (13:15).

(14:08) David shares stories about the actors ‘that got away,’ – from the ones who really wanted it to those who threw the script in the trash, including: David Letterman, Barry Manilow, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Bruce Jenner, Sigourney Weaver, Jack Webb, Harriet Nelson, and Peter Graves.

The two reminisce about the joy of being on set (19:19) and what it was like making a film that had the crew laughing during every scene, including the antics Leslie Nielsen played on Robert Hays (19:45).

David shares how the most shocking lines made it into the script (21:10).

Robert describes his crazy days while filming the disco scenes and running across the lot on his lunch breaks (21:45) and the craziness of filming in LAX airport.

They share the irony of casting the actual airport announcers to read  the red and white zone announcements (25:24) and the surprise of casting Ethel Merman in what was her final role (26:25).

The two laugh about the fact that–no planes will air the movie and share their experiences being on an airplane, how they get recognized and their parents reactions (28:25).

Small World – Gypsy (with Nathaniel Claridad)

Small World – Gypsy (with Nathaniel Claridad)

Nathaniel Claridad brings his experience as an actor, a director, and a (reluctant) producer to discuss Small World. This is a song in stark contrast to Mama Rose's first song, Some People. Instead of the brash chutzpah that has already been shown, this song is soft and intimate. Each actress to portray Rose has had a slightly different approach to singing it and the discussion turns to whether it works better to be sung sweetly or sensually.

Some People – Gypsy (with Karen Unland)

Some People is a song sung by a desperate woman. Or, perhaps, it could be looked at as an ode to the entrepreneur. At any rate Karen Unland returns to the show to discuss how Rose's first song of the show informs her character and how–depending on the performer–it can change the interpretation we have of them.
