Indo-Pacific countries make a play for America’s EV tax credits

Indo-Pacific countries make a play for America’s EV tax credits
Southeast Asian nations are the latest foreign trading partners looking to access America’s coveted electric vehicle tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. But their campaign creates challenges for the Biden administration, which is looking to balance its efforts to deepen economic ties in the Indo-Pacific with its promise of a clean energy transition that will help revitalize American manufacturing. POLITICO’s Steven Overly breaks down the latest negotiations. Plus, the Interior Department finalized an effort to block new oil and gas drilling on federal land surrounding Chaco Canyon, a region in New Mexico culturally important to Native tribes.    Steven Overly covers the intersection of trade and technology for POLITICO.  Josh Siegel is an energy reporter for POLITICO.  Nirmal Mulaikal is a POLITICO audio host-producer. Alex Keeney is a senior audio producer at POLITICO.  Jenny Ament is the executive producer of POLITICO’s audio department.   For more news on energy and the environment, subscribe to Power Switch, our free evening newsletter: https://www.politico.com/power-switch And for even deeper coverage and analysis, read our Morning Energy newsletter by subscribing to POLITICO Pro: https://subscriber.politicopro.com/newsletter-archive/morning-energy

Why US-EU talks for an EV tax credit deal have stalled

Why US-EU talks for an EV tax credit deal have stalled
For months now, European Union officials have pressed the Biden administration for a trade deal that would give EU automakers access to a larger chunk of the electric vehicle tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act. But reaching that agreement is taking longer than expected, and talks could drag into the summer. POLITICO’s Steven Overly breaks down the sticking points in negotiations and why the White House is under immense pressure from Congress to broker a favorable agreement. Plus, a bipartisan group of senators is starting discussions on a broad permitting deal outside the tense debt ceiling negotiations.   For more news on energy and the environment, subscribe to Power Switch, our free evening newsletter: https://www.politico.com/power-switch And for even deeper coverage and analysis, read our Morning Energy newsletter by subscribing to POLITICO Pro:  https://subscriber.politicopro.com/newsletter-archive/morning-energy   Steven Overly covers the intersection of trade and technology for POLITICO.  Josh Siegel is an energy reporter for POLITICO.  Nirmal Mulaikal is a POLITICO audio host-producer. Lincoln Goes Chinese, EV Tax Credit Surprises, Cars.Com Affordability Study

Lincoln Goes Chinese, EV Tax Credit Surprises, Cars.Com Affordability Study

Jill and Tom opened the show calling back to last week’s episode during which guest James Bell of Kia instructed Jill to make use of the “GT” button in her test Kia EV6 GT. Jill did as instructed; listen in for her impressions. The hosts discussed the coming 2024 Lincoln Nautilus, and it’s move to Chinese manufacture.

The conversation moved to the official list of vehicles that qualify this year for the federal EV tax credits. In the second segment Jill and Tom welcome Jane Ulitskaya of Cars.com to the show. Jane walked the hosts through the findings of Car’s first Affordability Study and Best Value New Cars list.

In the third segment Jill and Tom shared their impressions of the all-new Toyota Crown. Note: Amy Chao of Toyota joins the team next week for a deep dive into the brand’s newest model. (Jill also complained about Tom’s choice of test-car music. In this case Peruvian Psychedelic Cumbia.)

Jane joined Jill for Tom’s “Wagon or No Wagon” quiz, and Jill and Tom shared some of the newest content posted on Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk, and Consumer Guide Automotive.

Bullitt Mustang Auction, EV Tax Credits

Bullitt Mustang Auction, EV Tax Credits

Host Tom Appel and co-hosts Jill Ciminillo and Damon Bell start the show by discussing the phasing out of the federal tax credit for electric vehicles, and how consumers and automakers will be affected. Jill fills us in on her preview-drive experience with Mazda's new-for-2020 CX-30 compact crossover. John Kraman, Lead TV Commentator/Analyst for Mecum Auctions, calls in for an interview on the upcoming auction of the original 1968 Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in the movie Bullitt, and Mecum's upcoming Kissimmee event. Tom has another quiz on automobile/movie-title puns, and Damon runs down the articles posted this week on The Daily Drive blog. We wrap up the show by sharing our favorite movie cars.
