Scripture Reading: Hebrews 1:2,3

Few Biblical passages laud the excellencies of Christ like these opening verses of Hebrews 1. The position which Jesus occupies, both as the second person of the Godhead and as conquering Redeemer, is described in unrivalled and supreme terms. Jesus is "heir of all things" through whom the world was created (Heb 1:2). He is "the radiance of the glory of God" and "the exact imprint of His nature" (Heb 1:3).

Further, "he upholds the universe by the word of his power" (Heb 1:3). Every atom and molecule in all creation is held in place by the ongoing, and active, decree of Christ. We woke this morning by the word of His power.

Further, Christ made "purification for sins" (Heb 1:3). This means that He paid the penalty, demanded by divine justice, for sins, thus making eternal life possible for all who will humble themselves in heartfelt confession and trust in Him.

Further, after His work was finished, "he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high" (Heb 1:3). This means that His work of His redeeming sacrifice was finished and He now He reigns as the glorious God-Man.

All of this is theology, but theology is always meant to result in doxology. The only proper response to Christ in His glory is seen in Philippians 2:9-11. "God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
