PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Stewart Thorndike (BAD THINGS, LYLE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss the making of her new feature BAD THINGS (available on Shudder). From discovering her passion for the cinematic arts while traveling the country as a child… to the David Cronenberg film that changed the way she saw genre movies… to performing in front of the camera in the late Stanley Kubrick’s EYES WIDE SHUT… to the trials and tribulations of writing and bringing her new film BAD THINGS to life… to directing the indie ensemble in an abandoned hotel in snowy Ithaca, NY… to how her production survived the craziest and most frustrating COVID-19 setback that we’ve heard about filming during the pandemic yet… to BAD THINGS’ world premiere at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival (where Joe’s new film SUITABLE FLESH also premiered this year) and the process that it took to finally be able to think of herself as an “artist”… Stewart’s journey over the last 3 years has been a tumultuous one that many will be able to relate to and draw inspiration from!

Also, the group reflects on the stress of film festival premieres, Joe’s kitchen sink vomits up a demon, and the boys prepare for their appearance together at Silver Scream Con in Danvers, MA this coming weekend (9/8 - 9/10)!

Today we’re talking about Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick’s final (and possibly weirdest?) film. We discuss the perfectionism on display throughout, the monetary cost of Bill’s odyssey, and we uncover the identity of the red cloak. There’s lots of other bits, it’s maybe the dumbest podcast we’ve ever recorded.

Baby Jezus is weer in het land, en dus is dit de perfecte tijd om weer een lekker seizoensgebonden film door de mangel te laten halen door onze gast. Deze keer is het Stanley Kubricks kerstige meesterwerk Eyes Wide Shut (1999). Het was zijn eerste film in twaalf jaar, en ook meteen zijn laatste. De montage was net een paar dagen klaar, toen deze messias voor filmnerds plotseling het leven liet. Het is ook de film die misschien wel, misschien niet, de twee hoofdpersonen hun huwelijk kostte. Toen nog het heetste echtpaar van Hollywood: Tom Cruise en Nicole Kidman.

Indiewire riep Eyes Wide Shut laatst nog uit tot de beste film van de jaren negentig. Wie dat nooit zou doen is onze podgast van deze editie Duimpjekerstelen, en legendarisch figuur in de comedywereld van de Benelux, Fokke van der Meulen. Hij is de kroegbaas van het leukste comedypodium in het Nederlands taalgebied, Café the Joker in Antwerpen, en staat met De Moppentappers ook geregeld zelf op het podium. En in zijn eigen pod, de Fokcast, praat hij vaak met o.a. comedianvrienden en filmmakers over alles wat zichzelf popcultuur durft te noemen. Fokke knows his shit, en als hij iets shit vindt uit het oeuvre van Kubrick, dan is het wel Eyes Wide Shut.

En verder gaat het ook over de vraag of je kritiek mag hebben op Stanley Kubrick (Fokke: "2001 is een fucking saaie kutfilm!"), onder welke omstandigheden Fokke wel magisch realisme trekt in films, en de vergelijking tussen 150-take-Stanley en one-take-Clint.
