    166: Midnight margaritas! | Practical Magic (1998)

    166: Midnight margaritas! | Practical Magic (1998)

What a cute little movie! A great way to end off this October season and a perfect vibe for this Halloween! This is my first time watching this one and although I feel like I've seen it through film stills on Tumblr already. Nothing could have prepared me for how I want to LIVE inside of this movie. In the house, garden, and especially with the coolest Aunts in the galaxy.

Me and Mikey covered this one and even though he's seen it multiple times, it's still every bit as exciting. Our only gripes were that the story seemed a bit weird in the middle. While we were hoping for more of a Thelma and Louise type vibe it went a bit more Exorcist. We cover the amazing fashion and incredible resume of the costume designer, Judianna Makovsky and obsess over another successful 90s soundtrack.

Off-topic rants include: Mikey's Haunted House search, movie studio interference, and putting respect on Bella Swan's name and my complete shock in finding out Mikey is Team Jacob..the audacity!

    Ep. 52 Dogville

    Ep. 52 Dogville

Join me today as I we go to the 1930s Rocky Mountains and the avant-garde world of Lars von Trier’s film, Dogville. With the magic of digital video, minimalist setting, and an unforgettable performance from Nicole Kidman and Paul Bettany, we promise you'll find yourself captivated by this remarkable cinematic experience.

Feel the pulse of Dogville as we dissect the life of a fugitive, Grace, who finds sanctuary in this small town. Immerse yourself in a narrative that blurs the lines between greed and acceptance. I highlight the standout performances and the unique visual style of this movie.

Whether you're a film enthusiast or a casual viewer, this deep dive into Dogville promises to be an engaging and rewarding journey.

The Killing Of A Sacred Deer & Hilltop Hospital

The Killing Of A Sacred Deer & Hilltop Hospital

Strap on your surgical mask and/or your combat gear as we kick off Operation week with a discussion of the Top 5 Operations. You’ll no doubt remember that our operation theme was inspired by us picking two movies with the word ‘operation’ in the title in a row so we thought we’d double down on all that operation action. From various kinds and sizes of operations, to operations in different places and countries, right through to examples of operations within operations, and operations within operations within operations, we’ve got all your operation needs covered. It’s a very operationary week is what I’m trying to say.

We’d already unanimously decreed Yorgos Lanthimos a favourite of the pod for his absurdist comedy THE LOBSTER and he uses some of that film’s tone and style in 2017’s THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER. Troubled teenager Martin (Barry Keoghan) gradually insinuates himself into the life of Steven, (Colin Farrell) the cardiovascular surgeon who failed to save his fathers life, or maybe, man fails to take responsibility for his actions and is punished by the gods. Bizarre performances from fantastic actors, some seriously shocking and transgressive scenes, allusions to Greek mythology, yes I know what you’re thinking: that is literally everybody’s idea of a perfect movie but it’s also beautifully shot and edited and has a terrifying score so there’s that too. Difficult to recommend to everyone, but I’m still thinking about it way more than the last Marvel movie I watched, which is a grossly unfair and ridiculous comparison but I’ve just made it anyway.

Operation week finishes with HILLTOP HOSPITAL in which two conjoined twin Siamese cats are separated, with at least 50% of the patients surviving. Meanwhile a love triangle develops in the workplace between a cat, a dog and a hippo, while a human faced turtle scares Cris. Either a noble attempt to normalise hospitals and medical treatment for children or a surreal ER parody, it’s your call.

    116: "Opposites Attract"

Did we actually get an intern? Is this episode regular weird or different weird? And what are the neurological effects of jumping into the MIDDLE of this television show? We contextualize these questions and more as we watch Season 5, Episode 20 of Family Matters.

Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.

Join our countdown to number one (and our slow descent into madness) in all the places you expect internet people to be:

    Practical Magic (1998)

    Practical Magic (1998)

What a feel-good, comfort film about some things that simply aren’t too feel good! But also - some REALLY good things too!! Practical Magic (1998) feels almost like a TV series combined with its thrilling series finale, & for that, we love it all the more! Remember, there’s no homework here, & you should fall in love whenever you can - & also listen to us discuss all things practical & magical under the bed!

    Lion & Phineas and Ferb

    Lion & Phineas and Ferb

We start with a complete lack of intro this week but don't worry it won't be too long before we settle into our usual bland patter as we discuss the Top 5 Hitchhikers. Expect a few stories from seasoned traveller Dan, having somehow once found himself in the Belgian Congo after draft dodging, or perhaps some other stuff that he did actually say.

LION (2016) is a biography of Indian-Australian entrepreneur Saroo Brierley which tells the amazing journey of his reunification with his family, 25 years after having become separated from them in a train station in rural India. Accidentally journeying 1600km to Kolkata (Calcutta) where his native Hindi makes him incomprehensible to the Bengali speaking locals, newcomer Sunny Pawar gives an astonishing performance in the harrowing first 40 minutes as five-year old Sheru, who finds himself homeless and almost the victim of sex crimes before he is eventually adopted by an Australian couple. Dev Patel plays the adult Saroo searching improbably for his home, Rooney Mara does as much as she can with the thankless task of obligatory composite girlfriend but it's Nicole Kidman and David Wenham's benevolent parents Sue and John who warm your soul in the movies second half, made all the more affecting by Kidman's personal situation as mother to adopted children, before a simultaneously uplifting and heart-breaking ending draws this emotional gut-wringer to a close. A complete lack of any real lion content and an extended cameo from Google Earth forces me to take a star off.

It's summer vacation and PHINEAS AND FERB find themselves challenged to a thumb wrestling competition by local bully Buford after an accidental public humiliation with an ice-cream. Meanwhile, probable Nazi Dr Doofenshmirtz is attempting to mind-rape people into attending his birthday party and only the brother's pet platypus Perry can stop him. With Phineas undergoing a rigorous training regime masterminded by former world heavyweight champion boxer Evander Holyfield, and thousands of tickets sold to the forthcoming bout, sister Candace has the chance she needs to finally obtain undisputable proof of the boys’ shenanigans. Sharp writing and consistent wittiness mean this Disney offering was a firm favourite in one Dads house.
