Cattle industry leader Corbitt Wall, host of the FEEDER FLASH at NationalBeefWire.com gives an update on drought conditions across Texas. In his words, the effects of this drought combined with economic factors (fuel and fertilizer prices) are "unbelievable" with 3 mile line of trailers for the dropoff line at Emory Texas sale barn. The sale barn received such a surplus that they were auctioning off cattle through 5am the next morning. This sale barn was 30 miles south of me. My local sale barn was packed and I was an eyewitness to these unbelievable lines.. It is real.

To say Dan has wide-ranging experience is something of an understatement. He worked on fighter jets while in the Marines, studied sustainable agriculture and managed a farm. And he managed to squeeze in studying audio production in Nashville. He says he’s particularly interested in NCAT’s Armed to Farm training for veterans and in finding ways to use his multi-media skills to make NCAT’S ATTRA and other sustainable-agriculture resources even easier to use.

In this video I talk about skyrocketing farm feed inputs and how to reduce them. There is a lot of opportunity to reduce cost with grazing management on your farm and ranch. This video addresses an experience I had buying for my co-op and how the prices went up 5-12% overnight! This video talks about which farm animals require more feed (pigs and chickens) and which farm animals can be run with minimal inputs. Here in upper east Texas, I graze Dorper sheep and Beef cattle on pasture with little or no inputs. I hope this video on ranching and farming feed costs helps you to determine what you CAN do rather than stressing over what you CANNOT do.

The impact that these front yard and backyard gardens had on food production in the USA was HUGE. In 1943 40% of the produce the USA consumed was grown in these front yard, back yard gardens. Due to my intensive rotational grazing program with my flock of Dorper Sheep, forage production across my 23 acres EXPLODED last year. With the extra grass I custom grazed a herd of 14 beef cows. This was a mixed herd of cows, steers, and a bull. In this video I explain how I am overwintering the cattle with no hay. I also talk about how to protein supplement for poor quality pasture. I hope this helps you as you take care of your cattle during winter!

In the United States there are 2.04 million ranchers, 26,586 feed lots, 4 major meat packers, and 355 million consumers. The crisis in the beef cattle industry is a result of a centralized meat packing system. This video gives you an explanation of how the meat supply chain works, what the consumer can do to help, and how you can still make a profit off of beef cattle in 2022. While my last two videos have been a departure from the typical “farm life” content, the information they contain are important. As much as we need to know how to farm, we must also know why we farm.
