    Jean: Every Step Counts

    Jean: Every Step Counts

Jean started out with humble beginnings and had a few setbacks along the way.  She worked 4 part time jobs, raised her kids, and went to college at the same time. Her work ethic and experience, even the menial jobs, led to her ideal career as a writer, author, and lifestyle expert. Every step counted and gave her something valuable. She started out on government assistance and has taken small steps to make progress.  Finding a career, raising 6 children, and losing a spouse are just part of her story.  If you are feeling stuck, or are not happy where you are in life, this episode may be inspirational to you.

Whole Foods Prices & The Intrinsic Value of Food!

Whole Foods Prices & The Intrinsic Value of Food!

    Hi Everyone,

Over the past couple years, we have seen the cost of food rise exponentially. This rise was partly due to supply chains, but the major reason prices have been rising at a fast rate is due to the large amounts of money printing that the Federal Reserve has been doing.

With all this printing, more dollars are chasing fewer goods, causing the prices to rise. In today's podcast I go over the following:

    - Purchasing steak at Whole Foods for $53
    - Cost equivalents of this steak in Mexico/other countries that are in the global south
    - Palm Pay - Selling of this technology based on convenience, but worse things coming out of it
    - Eating healthy is a luxury now that not everyone can afford
    - Assessing alternatives to Whole Foods/Big food and shopping at farmers markets/butchers directly

Overall the goal is to pay fair value for high-quality food that doesn't kill us. The amount of junk in our food now can be overwhelming, and if we want to be healthy it can be expensive - but there are options out there.

    What do you think?

    Best Regards,

Do you love dumplings? We do too. That's one of the many reasons we spoke with Nick Sordoni, one of the owners behind the growing brand Brooklyn Dumpling Show (Philadelphia). The brand, which originated in Manhattan, New York, quickly gained in popularity when it launched during the pandemic. As a fully automat-based eatery, visitors can order ahead and use a QR code to pick up their fresh bites. We spoke with Laura Carroll, whose role as Insomnia Cookies' Director of Sales offers not only insight, but sheer bliss with every delectable bite. Carroll's career took on a life of its own within the culinary industry, and after finding her path drawing closer towards food, she eventually began working for Insomnia Cookies. We chatted with Laura regarding her own history, as well as took a deeper look into what makes their cookies, brownies, and other sweet treats so irresistible. Also, be sure to visit their location in South Philly (across from Geno's & Pat's), just remember to follow their instagram stories to access some hidden fun!

Speaking of irresistible, we can't imagine leafing out some of the best things in life: Farmers Markets! Farms play an important role in all our lives, and our final guest, Bilal Rice, is the Program Manager for The Food Trust in Philadelphia. Bilal let all of us know what The Food Trust does, where to find them, and the importance in offering the opportunity to purchase nutrient-rich foods to communities that are in food desserts. The Food Trust originated by offering classes in Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market in 1992. Years later, they now operate Farmers Markets in 35 locations in Philadelphia. Farmers Markets – Supporting Farmers Behind the Scenes

Farmers Markets – Supporting Farmers Behind the Scenes

In this episode of Voices from the Field, Samantha O’Byrne, CEO of the O’Hara Commons & Sustainability Center farmers market in Hamilton, Montana, gives us a behind the scenes look at the role of a farmers market manager during a conversation with NCAT Sustainable Agriculture Specialist Omar Rodriguez.

Key to Samantha’s management philosophy is a dedication to local foods and the desire to ensure that both the market and the farmers who offer their goods for sale succeed through mutual support and engagement.

If You Have the Drive, Just Do It | Danielle Bombash, Co-Owner of Bombash and Earley

In this exciting “behind-the-scenes” episode, Danielle Bombash, co-owner of Bombash and Earley, gives us a tour of her store and production space. She and her husband, Tim, run the business out of a charming storefront that resembles a cottage-style home in McMurray, PA. Their impressive and extensive lineup of botanical skin care products is made entirely by hand in small batches from this location.

After viewing their retail displays in the front of the store, I got to see their main production room in the back of the house, which is typically off-limits to customers. Danielle described how their products are made from raw ingredients, and she showed me some of the equipment that’s used in the creation process. We had a terrific discussion about the origin of the business, how she and Tim balance their unique approaches to entrepreneurship, and why family is a central part of what they are building.

In this episode of Voices from the Field, we meet Dr. Carolyn Krejci, an industrial engineer and expert on supply-chain management at the University of Texas at Arlington who is designing surprising new ways of supporting local and regional food systems.

She and NCAT Southwest Regional Director Mike Morris sit down to discuss her pioneering research on food transportation and the ingenious new “crowdshipping” phone app she and her team recently created for matching small farms with drivers who are willing to deliver farm products to urban markets. Could a ride-sharing system for food products expand markets and increase incomes for small farms?

Hank Watt on the power of the ledidi berry, AKA Nature’s Wild Berry

In Hank’s 20’s his parents were diagnosed with cancer 18 months apart. Going through that taught him that if you don’t have your health, you don’t have a lot to look forward to. Hank knew it was time for him to make a change. At 250 lbs and a size 40+, he was tired of making excuses for himself. Hank turned to his friend Juliano, who owned Planet Raw, a healthy food restaurant, for help. If anyone was going to help Hank, it’d be Juliano. Juliano ordered these red berries that Hank never ate before that promised to turn sour and tarty food sweet. After ingesting a berry, Hank took a sip from a healthy juice and couldn’t believe it - it was so sweet! Hank then started drinking this juice everyday and eventually lost 60 lbs in 8 months. Today, Juliano and Hank decided to take that special berry and turn it into a business! Their goal is to now raise awareness about the non-gmo organic ledidi berry that they now call Nature’s Wild Berry. They aim to help people cut sugar and processed foods and increase their love of vegetables and whole foods using ledidi berries.
