Episode 15. Mas Que Nada Brothers

When you hear the name MAS QUE NADA, you know your ears will be a wash with some of the finest beats house music has to offer, as this DJ and Production Duo from the north of England always have their fingers firmly on the pulse when it comes to what really works for a crowded dance floor. With regular appearances in the UK at the likes of Ministry, XOYO & Studio 338 these ‘Not Actual Brothers’ can also be seen spinning their wares in Austria this coming April for Snowbombing alongside the likes of Bicep, Fat Boy Slim and Rudimental. (And if you can manage to squeeze your way into one of the busiest clubs in Ibiza this summer you’ll understand what a proper party looks like when it kicks off in a sweaty toilet at Hi.)

There really is nobody busier right now, so we’re delighted to have found a little slot in the diary to invite the boys onto the show to chat about their unwavering love for the scene and the power of a repetitive beat

Steven Severin and James Miles of Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival

Steven Severin and James Miles of Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival

After a brief three-year absence, Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival is making its grand return for its 50th Anniversary. Taking place Sept 2 and 3 in Seattle, this unique Arts-forward music festival celebrates inclusivity and community, and we've got festival organizers Steven Severin and James Miles to talk to us about the focus and determination it takes to present an event on such a grand scale. An esteemed local venue owner, Steven is the Co-President of festival producer New Rising Sun and James, aka Fresh Professor -- a career educator with a novel approach -- is the Executive Director of Third Stone, the non-profit arts and education arm of Bumbershoot. This dynamic duo have set forth to bring a decidedly local flavor to a festival that also features major musical acts this year such as Sleater-Kinney, Sunny Day Real Estate, Brittany Howard, The Revivalists, Durand Jones and Fatboy Slim, among others. "Celebrating what it means to be an artist," Steve and James talk about how important it is to not only entertain the audience, but to support the community and make music and the arts not only accessible to all, but how to embed the concept of inclusivity into a long-standing community-based festival. It's a wonderful new era for Bumbershoot and we are here for it. So join us for this special episode and learn more about this impressive and exciting festival as we venture into the Great Northwest for the 50th Anniversary edition of the Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival. It's gonna be a great ride!!

    Karen Dalton - The Character - Eyes & Teeth - Funny for Money - Season 7 - Edition 11

    Karen Dalton - The Character - Eyes & Teeth - Funny for Money - Season 7 - Edition 11

Karen Dalton and I have a connection that makes todays Podcast edition quite emotional. I ended up adoring her and her mum and knowing her family through many events we have worked on over the years and to think we met on a showcase over 20 years ago.
I heard a whisper that her uncle was a famous Ventriloquist and once confirmed I realised that she was related to Dennis Spicer. Dennis is one of my favourite ventriloquists of all time. Way ahead of his time and so creative sadly we lost him in 1964 when he was only 29 years old and literally a fortnight after his Successful Television break on the Royal Variety Show.

Getting to know Karen and her mum Rose was special, and it wasn't long after that meeting that I had the idea of writing my own book on "vents" as I was collating so many stories, anecdotes, photos and I grew this passion in me to share their stories.

Todays Podcast though is about Dennis's very talented niece Karen Williams, known as Karen Dalton and her alter ego Elsie Crumpet which took Karen from Butlins to High End Corporate Events. She has a wealth of experience and knowledge about our business and she is always an asset to have on a show, especially if you need the "wow factor".

Here is Karen as Elsie Crumpet https://youtu.be/RR-j1KTna4A

Here is her uncle Dennis Spicer at the very Royal Show in 1964 https://youtu.be/VdGK6Q6wzcM

Welcome to Eyes & Teeth Karen Dalton...

    Strange Days (1995)

In this week's episode, Craig and Geoff take a look at Kathryn Bigelow's futuristic sci-fi noir, Strange Days. Following a story created by James Cameron, it is a film that even 25+ years on is still socially and culturally relevant in an eerie way. Together, Craig and Geoff discuss the film's journey to screen, its innovation and relevance today and so much more.
