Using Fear As A Force with Dawna Jones

Using Fear As A Force with Dawna Jones

Fear drives a lot of what we do as humans. We often make decisions based on fear, and those don’t always land us in the best of spots. So, how do you use fear as something to propel you to a place of impact and influence? In this week’s episode of Career Strategies for Women that Work, I’m chatting with my friend Dawna Jones.

Dawna has a knack for seeing beneath the surface to identify what is going on and then coming up with novel ways to transform it into a positive impact. Specializing in getting past learned limitations and constricted thinking on complex systemic issues.

Fluent with complex uncertain conditions Dawna brings more than intellectual horsepower and extensive experience in working with team-organizational dynamics and takes time to share what it means to use fear as a force!

Fear and Control in Times of Remote Work & Home Office

Fear and Control in Times of Remote Work & Home Office

"Trust is good, control is better". Most of us are probably very familiar with this belief.

    But is it really true?

In many companies and organizations, people live and work in an ambience that is basically characterized by deep mistrust. There is rarely a personal basis.

How is trust supposed to develop and be lived?

Then you do it the way you always do; as a manager or supervisor, you better check whether everything is really going as planned.

Well, this classic approach has a catch and has long had serious disadvantages.

In a world ... that is becoming more and more complex ... in times in which the old familiar ways of working and structures are torn from their anchors overnight ... it is uncertain whether existing business models will even survive in the near future - in this world, many managers and executives feel their supposed control increasingly slipping away.

The daily round through the office, the look over the shoulder - all this is no longer possible due to home office and remote work regulations and transformations.

It's high time to delve deeper into the confusion and constraints surrounding the concepts of control and trust in detail.

For this purpose, Andreas, Johanna and Daniel have entered into an open-ended discourse and discussed and assigned the various forms of control.

Questions and opinions highlighted in this episode:

    • What are the forms and approaches of control?
    • Allocating budgets to monitoring or coaching employees*, which makes more sense?
    • What image of people do we actually have as supervisors of our colleagues*?
    • How can we create a trusting work environment?
    • Top-down control vs. self-control

EXCERPTS YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUMP IN

[09:33] What is the image of people that I have as a supervisor or in the company in general?
[16:55] In what environment do controls take place?
[19:51] That's the core of agile.
[22:00] Work overload at any point in a production or service process - that's the normal state.
[27:56] That plan just has to be followed through, fulfilled, and then it fits.
[33:52] Success is cold, the customer's laughter is not.
[34:42] In top / middle management, but also at employee level, one deals far too little with the issue of personal integrity, and personality development.
[36:17] How can we create a work environment that supports this trust, that people open up, that they are up for it, want to work together, really work together?
[40:32] The openness to say that, the courage that goes with it, and also the respect to accept the other person that we're human beings and can't perform pretty consistently every day like the machine - that's important in collaboration.
[44:29] The possibility of predicting something is becoming less and less.
[47:10] What do I want with adherence to old processes? I don't need that. I need the imagination, I need the creativity and this moving forward, experimenting.
[49:30] Only if I work on myself as a person, to improve myself further, as a leader or also in the interpersonal area, do I have the possibility to also achieve fundamental and drastic changes in the long term.
