Ep. #29| Booktober Series: The Book That Saved My Life Ft Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
It's the start of the booktober series! This October I'll be sharing some of the life lessons that literature and words have imparted upon me. Books are my safe space, they make sense to me in a world that so often makes little sense. They bring me moments of quiet, reflection, and questioning. Books are my safe space, the cheapest and arguably the healthiest form of "escapism" out there. Books speak to me, they open small windows of insights inside my mind, which then seeps into my soul. I'm grateful to books, I'm also deeply indebted to books. In this episode, I'll be sharing some of the lessons I've learned from Eat Pray Love. To say this book saved my life would be a complete understatement, it was a devastating, enlightening, and simultaneously chaotic read. It challenged my beliefs, made me accountable for my own life, and answered questions about prayer, God, and spirituality at a time when questions were all I had. There is a reason its a best-seller and was turned into a movie (Lol still haven't watched the movie, probably never will) 833 downloads! Ep. #27|Ft Kemelo β€œKemi” Sehlapelo: Reconstructing a Sexual Identity After Sexual Assault, Navigating Self-Healing Amidst Echoes of Stigma
As a woman, perhaps my biggest fear is having something sexual or violent been done to my body without my consent, on the backdrops of the #metoo movement, the continuous degradation and disregard for women's bodies and rights running rampant throughout a plethora of legal systems, South Africa's very real and scary femicide in the form of gender-based violence, sexual violence, and murder; a clear message is being sent to women, and it's not one of protection, freedom, safety, accountability, and liberation. Sex is sometimes not sexy, in this episode I sit down with Kemelo β€œKemi” Sehlapelo and discuss her journey of navigating the muddy waters of reconstructing a sexual identity after sexual assault and how she has channeled self-healing & self-efficacy amidst the echoes of societal imposed stigma, shame, guilt. She comes in blunt, honest, and very real. 755 downloads! Ep. #26| Sexy September Sex Series Ft Wendy Weng: Between Two Worlds, Growing Up In A Traditional Conservative Chinese Family In The US
Growing up between two worlds with clear-cut and distinguishable differences in values, cultural norms and expectations can be a jarring game of navigation and simultaneous assimilation. This is true for this week's guest Wendy Weng, who was born to traditional conservative Chinese parents and raised in the U.S. The values she learned at home and the ones found within the society she was living in couldn't have been more day and night. This theme and clash would continue throughout her life as she navigated puberty, her sexuality and ultimately becoming a woman. In this episode, she talks about her experiences growing up as an Asian girl in the US and then later on returning back to Beijing, China. She shares about how the "sex talk" went down in the Weng household and how she feels navigating the world in her body and skin. Let's talk about sexy things! Ep. #25| Sexy September Sex Series Ft Mo (Queen Cunnilinga) Part 2: Sexual Liberation & Understanding Dialogue Nuance Within Sex Positivity

Ep. #25| Sexy September Sex Series Ft Mo (Queen Cunnilinga) Part 2: Sexual Liberation & Understanding Dialogue Nuance Within Sex Positivity
There is something powerful, beautiful, and scary about finding more of who you are as life progresses and all the pieces collected over time start to make sense. One key area of human identity; one that can cause contention both within us and outside of us, lies within our sexual identity. For women, black women, women with disabilities, LGBTQ individuals this can be an extremely difficult journey towards sexual discovery and freedom. In this episode, I sat down to talk to Mo, aka Queen Cunnilinga, a young South African queer woman who is discovering and exploring her sexuality through her own gaze, however, being constantly confronted by the unavoidable gaze of society and the backdrops of her environment. In Part two of our two-part conversations (check out last week's episode if you haven't yet), we talk about sexual freedom, the desire to be liberated in one's sexuality without it always being a statement or form of activism but rather as a natural part of human existence. Mo brings light to the nuances and complexities necessary for a holistic sex-positivity conversation. Let's get physical! It Takes a (Wisconsin) Village

    It Takes a (Wisconsin) Village

If it takes a village to raise a child, it may need two villages to care of a child with special needs. Adversity has a way of revealing who genuinely is in one's corner and who isn't. This episode takes you through various examples of how people chose to be present in another's life in a meaningful way. It also briefly touches upon how even family members can disappoint you at a time when you are at your most vulnerable.Β  Through a series of random acts of kindness, Village 2.0 would emerge and prove to be a strong foundation for a family in need of community.Β

Ep. 44: Spin Instructor (@_meghankelley_) on Turning Around and Finding Community

Ep. 44: Spin Instructor (@_meghankelley_) on Turning Around and Finding Community

Meghan is the Master Instructor and Marketing Manager at Reve Cycling Studio in Portland Maine. Meghan is originally from Vermont, but moved to Maine to attend college.Β

During her time at the University of Southern Maine, Meghan was looking for her community. This is where Reve came into the picture. When Meghan began riding at Reve she began to find that sense of belonging that she had been missing. She quickly did what she needed to become an instructor and began teaching at Reve!
    Β
Β From this point on Meghan’s dreams began to grow as post do, post-grad. She dreamed of being a cycling instructor for Soul Cycle (the King of all Cycling studios).

On this episode, Meghan shares with us what it was like to chase her dream and be brave and then what it is like to realize you are happier at home. We loved hearing this perspective because we know there are so many men and women that experience this, but never share what it is like. Meghan talks about how it is okay to do the thing you are scared of that makes you reach for your dreams and encourages you to try it for yourself, but once you have done it, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to KEEP doing it. If your heart is pulling you somewhere else it is okay to go.Β

Have you ever wondered what it takes to fit in?Β
In this episode, I talk to Marsha Druker, founder of FuckUp Nights Toronto about what it's like to follow your dreams, start over again, accept and embrace your failures and celebrate life's greatest lessons with like-minded people. The greatest reminder we can have is if you don't find a community you identify yourself with, create one and see the magic happen in front of you. Life's better enjoyed with people by your side, and I hope this episode shows you all that and more!

What is community? How finding or making community can fulfill so many of our needs and what are the gifts of being in a community? How we can create or find one?
In a world where so many are feeling so disconnected and alone, community brings connection and a feeling as if we belong. We know that someone will be there if we are sick, or need cheering up, or need someone to check on our animals. While extended families and neighborhoods are dissolving, community can take their place. Finding community can be so important in our lives, let's explore how we can do this and how can we find communities in our area or online?

The Importance of Community - Cynthia Berry

The Importance of Community - Cynthia Berry

No one is an island. We all need community. And for a family impacted by disability, having a community of support to share encouragement and help meet real needs can change everything. On today’s Mother’s Day episode of the Joni and Friends Ministry Podcast, Crystal talks with Cynthia Berry, a woman who has faced a series of challenges: she’s a single mom, an African American woman, and mother to a child with special needs. Through each challenge, Cynthia has found her lifeline of help and support through the community of her church. Listen as she shares what her community taught her about her son how each new challenge has deepened her faith in Jesus.

If you feel overwhelmed by your challenges today, please don’t self-isolate. Find a community of support and press in, even if it is uncomfortable. God has given us the local church to provide real community… and you have a story of hope that needs to be shared.

For practical tools to help build a community of support for families impacted by disability, download our free book Doing Life Together at www.joniandfriends.org/podcast

Joni and Friends was founded in 1979 by Joni Eareckson Tada who in a diving accident was left a quadriplegic at 17 years old. Ministry began as Tada, joined by friends around her kitchen table, responded to letters she received from people with disabilities in search of support. Over the past 40 years, the ministry has grown to serve thousands of people impacted by disability worldwide: Joni and Friends has delivered more than 150,000 wheelchairs and Bibles through Wheels for the World and provided Christian care to 63,000 special needs family members through Family Retreats. The organization also equips individuals and churches with disability ministry training and provides higher education courses through the Christian Institute on Disability. For more encouragement, download the Joni and Friends radio podcast in English or Spanish, and view inspirational videos on the Joni and Friends website.
