    Orchestral Maneuvers on the Playa

Some people are surprised to learn that Black Rock City is home to not just one but two full-fledged symphony orchestras. While the Black Rock Philharmonic kicks out the classical jams, the Playa Pops brings the big-ensemble sound to popular music.

Both are composed (ahem) of passionate volunteer musicians – classically trained, self-trained, and otherwise – who come together once a year to perform in the dust (or mud) the songs they have practiced all year at home.

In this installment, kbot and Stuart talk to members of the Playa Pops and the Black Rock Philharmonic about their process, their performances, and how the desert hates their instruments. And we get to hear some amazing live music performed by actual humans, recorded live at Burning Man 2023 in the Black Rock Desert.

Maria Tallchief: By Turns Firebird, Cinderella, Mother, Muse. A Conversation with Elise Paschen

Maria Tallchief: By Turns Firebird, Cinderella, Mother, Muse. A Conversation with Elise Paschen

Maria Tallchief  was  born Elizabeth Marie Tall Chief  in 1925 in Fairfax, Oklahoma, where her grandfather had served as chief in the Osage Nation. Seventeen years later, she found her way to New York and became one of the most famous American ballerinas of the 20th century.

She rejected suggestions that she change her name to Tallchieva, at the time when many American dancers adopted Russian stage names,

Tallchief would become forever linked to some of George Balanchine's most transformational ballets. (Not only was she his prinicipal muse, but she was married to him  for six years). In 1949, when she danced the title role of Igor Stravinsky's  Firebird to Balanchine's incredibly complex choreography, she caused a sensation. No one had seen anything like it. At the height of her career, Tallchief was considered  the most technically brilliant ballerina the U.S. had ever produced.

I spoke with Maria Tallchief's daughter, the renowned poet Elise Paschen,  about her mother's childhood, her devotion to Balanchine, her hard work and self discipline, her marriages, and the ways in which she expressed her love for her daughter. Elise read two poems she wrote about her mother.

And in the Department of Odd Coincidences, there's this: For years, every time I've moved (and I've moved a lot), I've taken with me a much loved  book I own, titled Poetry Speaks. I bought it for the written poems, but also for the  three CD's it came with, filled with spoken poetry. For years I kept the discs in my car and listened to those CD's while driving, soothed by verse read by the poets themselves:  Walt Whitman, T.S. Eliot; Dorothy Parker;  Langston Hughes, Allen Ginsberg,  Sylvia Plath. At some point after Spotify had taken the steering wheel of  my listening  habits, I lost the poetry CD's.

But the book remains in my possession. And I keep it close at hand on the bookshelf next to my desk. Occasionally, I take it down, open it, and read whatever poem I happen upon.

Then, a few weeks ago, just  before Elise and I were set to talk, I glanced at the shelf, and my eyes lingered  just long enough on Poetry Speaks to take in the names of the volume's editors: Elise Paschen. How strange that I'd never bothered to read the name. Yet now, how fitting. And thirty minutes later, there she was, reading poetry -- her own -- aloud.

Ep 16 with Rob Goodwin: Artist, Designer & Maker

Ep 16 with Rob Goodwin: Artist, Designer & Maker

    Artist | Designer | Maker

    • You can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.

Rob Goodwin is an extraordinary artist and a fantastic example of what it means to be born and bred with the belief that having London as your main source of creative inspiration and stylistic reference brings.

Rob began his career as a designer almost by accident, which is perhaps why his pieces are so easy to admire, yet so hard to pigeonhole. His visions are full of both fantasy and epic conspiracies that take you places without allowing you the time to acknowledge the inherent contradictions between his medieval and futuristic visions that create, in turn, unprecedented aesthetic discoveries.

Specialising in unique and inimitable leather pieces with elaborate artisanal detail, his creations are imbued with selfless dedication and a sophisticated attention to detail.

His creations have been worn by celebrities such as Madonna, Rihanna and Angelina Jolie, and have also been exhibited in art galleries, included in editorials of fashion and trend magazines, filmed in international commercials and starred in exquisite theatrical productions.

It is however, thanks to the histrionic nature of his pieces, that Rob has recently started an interesting career as an accessory designer for high-status film productions, and in this conversation Rob tells us in great detail how Hollywood came into his life, how he has survived moments of intense artistic doubt and what it’s like to gallop between Prague and London.

This conversation is an ode to the fragility that exists in the heart of every incorruptible creator. Listen to it in order to reconsider your own doubts and reconnect with the nobility of your own aspirations, ambitions and dreams. It will certainly be worth it.

    And now, enjoy the interview!

Episode 45: The Trees, The Bees and T.T. Flowers (Two-Part Episode)

Episode 45: The Trees, The Bees and T.T. Flowers (Two-Part Episode)

Nathan and Eppy cover our second two-parter episode, a Season Three gem featuring notable character actor Strother Martin as the titular T.T. Flowers, an elderly farmer who refuses to sell his land to a predatory real estate developer. Through a scheme involving his shady son-in-law and an ethically bankrupt psychiatrist, T.T. is hauled off against his will to a mental institution; but Rocky knows that something isn't right. Once he get Jim on the case, it's just a matter of time until he starts to uncover the scheme, but he faces numerous attempts on his life as he tries to find some hard evidence to prove the wild conspiracy. With a genius framing device that unites both episodes as one story, great performances all around and some great action sequences, we really enjoyed this one. Recommended!
