    The Search for Sustainable Salmon

    The Search for Sustainable Salmon

Depending on who you are, your connection to salmon may be spiritual, cultural or just a matter of taste. If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you might be familiar with and appreciate wild salmon, but for the rest of us, our love of salmon avocado rolls reflects a love of farmed salmon. Because yes, most of what you’re eating is farmed, whether you realize it or not.

Today on What You’re Eating, we look at America's favorite fin fish, salmon, and dig a little deeper into where it comes from, what’s farmed, what’s wild, and why some people want you to care about that distinction at all. We get into the details of fish farming — of salmon, and other fish, too — and how it replicates some of the problems we see in land-based factory farms for animals like chicken and pigs. We also ask the experts where we can buy wild salmon, any labels to seek out, how to make it more affordable, and how best to cook it.

Study Finds Food Solution to Climate Problem + Nowadays Plant-Based Chicken Nuggets

Study Finds Food Solution to Climate Problem + Nowadays Plant-Based Chicken Nuggets

A new study from Stanford University suggests one greenhouse gas can be captured and transformed into feed for farmed fish. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about a recent study that unveils a cost-effective method of producing fishmeal from methane, a greenhouse gas emitted and flared from industrial sources across the US. The team wonders whether this sustainable solution can be used to produce other animal feeds and how farmed fish produced with this method will be marketed to consumers.

Also, in this episode, Mira talks about Nowadays, a plant-based chicken nugget maker that found a way to reduce the number of ingredients and produce a healthier chicken nugget alternative. The GMO- and soy-free nuggets do not need to use any binders, thickeners or artificial ingredients and contain only seven, easy-to-pronounce ingredients. The team commends Nowadays for creating a healthier plant-based product than many of its alternatives and wonders whether the product will come down in price over time.

    Nathan Cullen

    Nathan Cullen

This weeks guest is Nathan Cullen. Nathan spent 15 years working as a Member of Parliament for the N.D.P.  He represented the riding of Skeena-Bulkley Valley. It's an area that he loves and has worked hard to protect. Some of Nathan's greatest political achievements so far have been to push back 'open net fish farms' , protect the Sacred Headwaters of The Skeena, Nass and Stikine Rivers (from Shell who would have liked the exploit the area for it's rich deposits of coal bed methane) and helped to stop the controversial Enbridge "Northern Gateway" Pipeline that would have put the local environment and Indigenous people's at risk. Nathan grew up in Toronto and took "International Development Studies and Environmental Studies' in University. He then went on to work with different NGO's all over the world from Central America, South America and Africa .  Nathan talks about his experiences working in groups to effect change, why he almost quit being a politician, how it's easy for politicians to loose their integrity, working to get child soldiers out of Sierra Leone after the blood diamond conflict, the need for reconciliation in Canada, when to get out of the way, knowing when to stop talking and much more.

The Shape of Water Farming: Jen Bushman

With the help of tech, water farmers can listen to fish eat when they’re in the sea. A few sustainable fish farms are now branded in the same way that well-respected cattle ranches are. Host Dana Cowin learns about changes and improvements in aquaculture from expert Jen Bushman on this episode of Speaking Broadly. Bushman also shares her path to being an aqua specialist: her darkest moment seeing everything she’d worked for evaporate, her teenage son’s wisdom, and the power of serendipity.
