The Mountain Hydrology Lab at West Virginia University has defined the density of whitewater river runs in the United States and cross referenced this data with how climate change will alter those flows, and how changes in river flows, to include low flows and floods, will impact the people living along those rivers. This episode talks at length with the Director of the Mountain Hydrology Lab, who is also a stout river kayaker, Associate Professor Nicolas Zegre about this work his students are doing, how West Virginia has the most dense collection of whitewater runs, and where students can gain excellent river based educations.

Monday brought a significant outbreak of severe weather to the mid-Atlantic region, resulting in numerous severe thunderstorms that moved across Delmarva late in the evening. Rotating supercells triggered tornado warnings across the lower shore of Maryland, while torrential rains triggered a rare Flash Flood Emergency to be issued by the National Weather Service for the city of Cambridge. Chief Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek and Meteorologist Jake Grant break down the specifics of the setup that caused the severe weather. 

We spend a lot of time correcting misapprehensions about the desert. But don't get the impression we think we're flawless! We've made our share of mistakes about the desert as well. In this episode, we share some of the things we once thought about the desert that are just plain wrong, on topics ranging from rainfall to rattlesnakes. And of course we do this on a hike in the Mojave Desert.

We installed our first two rain barrels!  The amount of water we've already collected has been surprising.  This totally transforms the runoff from the roof from a liability (creating mud and erosion) to an asset (watering our trees and garden).  Additionally, we cover some pros and cons of installing rain barrels as well as our plans for the rest of the downspouts on the house.
