Wellness Woes: Clean Eating, Diets, Weight Loss & Weight Gain

Wellness Woes: Clean Eating, Diets, Weight Loss & Weight Gain

This week we're talking diets, weight loss and the inevitable weight gain that most experience. From clean eating to intermittent fasting some of the most revered approaches to diet can lead to preoccupation with food and patterns of disordered eating. Research is showing that dieting, that is restricting the way we eat in some way shape or form, is likely to result in a return to our original weight within a year, and now we are seeing that dieting can lead to gaining back more than was originally lost. In today's show we'll take a peak into the science of it all to understand why diets fail (and why you aren't a failure if they don't work for you).

What Is An Eating Disorder? A Conversation Between A Mother and Daughter

Let's normalize talking about tough topics with our daughters. They deserve to have awareness about mental health conditions like eating disorders. Our girls need to have the tools to spot trouble brewing in their own minds and the minds of their friends. I love this conversation I had with my 9 year old daughter, Ava, because it proves such conversations don't have to be miserable. The serious can be seriously fun. See you inside the episode!

The Real Reason Why You’re Stuck Obsessing Over The Way You Look

Is your reflection in the mirror stirring up negative thoughts about the way you look? Does it feel impossible to stop noticing your so-called “flaws”? Why is this? Well, I recorded this episode to teach you why AND what to do about it. You may not want to hear the truth but I wouldn’t be a good friend if I didn’t bring it to your attention. It’d be as bad as letting you walk poolside in your bikini with toilet paper stuck to your buttcheek. I’m better than that and so are you :)

412: 5 Steps to Overcome Food Obsession

Social media has caused us to become obsessed with eating the right way. I wholeheartedly believe that social media is one of the main causes of our obsession with food, nutrition and wellness. And you may feel that you have to be obsessed with food in order to be healthy.

But there is a better way. In today’s episode I’m going to share 5 steps to overcome food (and wellness) obsession. Listen to today’s episode to learn those 5 steps!

Takeaways & Reflections | Our Food Relationship & Eating Our Feelings

Takeaways & Reflections | Our Food Relationship & Eating Our Feelings

What is your relationship with food? Would you say it's healthy? Does it leave you often feeling shameful? Does the self-critic lurk out from the shadows after you've eaten something that isn't deemed "healthy?"

I know I've left a drive-thru at times wondering why on earth I ever stopped, as I just feel like physical crap after eating something I know isn't serving me. Perhaps that is my intuition and my inner-knowing saying "I told you so!" Or, perhaps it's neither good nor bad; rather these are labels that, as a society, we've placed on food? Either way, shame is often a large part of our food relationship.

We often "eat our feelings," as the saying goes (which seems to be a buzz phrase nowadays), and then feel shameful for doing so. We may then eat, even more, bingeing and stuffing, only to feel like physical crap later or, as my guest from last week's podcast shared, develop an eating disorder.

Our food relationship starts in childhood. Whether you were forced to clean your plate, food was used as a reward, you grew up with food insecurity, food was part of a punishment, or became a means of control in body image - I guarantee that many of the patterns of behavior that existed with food in childhood, still exist in your adulthood. At the root of it, however, is grief.

I don't think this is a topic talked about as it relates to grief. So, I'm happy to share this week's episode and, I encourage you to listen to last week's episode as well. I will be talking about this again this fall with a therapist who struggled with an eating disorder as well. We dive into the topic of food and kids more in that episode coming up. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, after you listen to this week's episode, I encourage you to give some thought to how you feel about food and your relationship with it. Is it a means to survive or is it a means to thrive?

Hannah Howard | Food: My Perfect Obsession

Hannah Howard | Food: My Perfect Obsession

Anorexia nervosa: an eating disorder characterized by attempts to lose weight to the point of starvation.

Hannah believed she was destined to suffer in silence. Her obsession with food, body image, and a strive for perfection began in middle school. She was always the tallest in her class and developed early on as well. Hannah would go through periods of starving herself followed by an episode of bingeing. This went on through college and into her 20s when she finally "got sick and tired of being sick and tired." One email to an author led to learning about a support group for those who are struggling with an eating disorder. This group opened her up to support, and a sense of community that aided her in dismantling the shame that had consumed her for so many years.

Years later, and married, it was a miscarriage that taught @hannahmhoward how to have compassion for herself in a way she hadn't fully practiced.

One book, email, a phone call -- action, can change your entire life.  Now 10 years into recovery, Hannah learned and wants to share that you're not alone, and going through challenges alone doesn't help with shame, if anything, it perpetuates it.

We all have a relationship with food, whether we have an eating disorder or not. And, like grief, there are so many ways we are misinformed and there are false beliefs we have been raised with that shape the rest of our lives.

Pregnancy Shouldn't be the ONLY Reason Women's Bodies are "Allowed" to Change

Pregnancy Shouldn't be the ONLY Reason Women's Bodies are "Allowed" to Change

In this episode, I share various comments I've received when I've shared photos of my body on social media: before I got pregnant, during pregnancy, and postpartum.

    We chat about:

    • how well-intentioned comments about someone's body can actually be harmful
    • how, as women, our bodies change for MANY reasons over our lifetime: some of which is out of our control
    • why it's important to find ways to compliment women on things other than their body
    • why we shouldn't only be allowed to feel confident about our stretch marks/cellulite if we've had a baby (or any other reason to "justify" the changes in our body)
    • learning to accept our bodies in ALL seasons and for ALL reasons!

I just wanted to share my thoughts candidly in this episode, and I hope this conversation can help shift the narrative about body confidence and acceptance.

Overcoming Depression & Binge Eating | Client Chats ft. Kindra

Overcoming Depression & Binge Eating | Client Chats ft. Kindra

I recorded this episode with one of my favorite humans, Kindra from @creating.kindra!

Kindra is a former client who participated in my 8-week Food Freedom Mentorship, followed by my yearlong group coaching mastermind. I wanted to bring her on the podcast to share her experience with depression, binge eating, therapy, and everything in between, to help you understand that you are not alone in your struggles.

Here's a snippet of what we cover in today's episode:

    — Trusting your KNOWING (and how Kindra knew I was pregnant on our retreat haha)

    — Why it’s important to surround yourself with women who uplift and empower you vs. gossip and judge you

    — How understanding decision fatigue has helped her eating habits

    — Learning how to trust yourself in small ways so you can learn to trust yourself in the BIG THINGS

    — Kindra's history with depression (not wanting to get out of bed or go to work, and how that led to binge eating) and her rock bottom moment

    — Different types of trauma and why  trauma-comparing can be harmful

    — How binge eating impacted Kindra's relationships

    — How to support friends or family who you suspect are struggling

    — Kindra's experience working with a therapist

    — Cultivating self awareness, asking yourself questions

    — And we end with a piece of advice that she would give EVERYONE listening  to become more patient and loving with yourself

113: Get UNSTUCK & Find Your Path by Asking Yourself the Right Questions

Do you feel like you’re in a rut? Like you’ve been trying to do something that’s worked for you in the past, but it’s not working for you anymore? This podcast talks about how to confidently pivot and change directions when what you’ve been doing hasn’t been working. And, why it's SO important to have regular check ins to get to know yourself on a deeper level.

In this episode, we chat candidly about:

    • when I started to feel like my business wasn’t in alignment anymore
    • the questions I ask myself to figure out my next right steps
    • an EPIC quote that one of my clients shared with me that encapsulates this whole podcast into one philosophical golden nugget of wisdom
    • why I don’t believe in “finding yourself” (and what I believe instead)
    • why scheduling time for self check-ins is critical to your success
    • YOU are your own best guide; not a teacher, book, podcast, or any other resource outside of yourself
    • you might KNOW something, but are you EMBODYING it?

Action item of the week: make a date with yourself! schedule in 30 min-1 hour for a self check in this week.

112: My Lowest Point with Food & Where I Am Now

112: My Lowest Point with Food & Where I Am Now

For YEARS, I was obsessed with food. How much to eat, when to eat, planning and prepping my meals, counting down the minutes until I could eat again, looking up restaurant nutrition facts hours or days before a date so I could “be prepared”, glued to an app on my phone all day adding and subtracting and trying to fit my macros into one big magical puzzle piece.

    IT. WAS. EXHAUSTING. 🥵

I spent so much time and mental energy on FOOD, that I didn’t have time or energy to do the things I really loved... the things that REALLY filled me up that weren’t food at all.

Once I started to develop a healthier relationship to food, SO MANY DOORS TO HAPPINESS opened up for me:

    • I could do workouts that I loved and genuinely enjoyed, not just the ones that “burned the most calories”
    • I could go out to eat with my friends any night of the week (without having to analyze the menu beforehand) because I learned how to eat in a way that made me feel good, even if I chose to indulge.
    • I learned how to practice mindfulness around how much to eat, so that I COULD eat donuts, pizza and whatever I wanted without feeling guilty about it.
    • And so much more

When you stop focusing all of your energy on food, your world opens up to SO much time and energy for things that will fill you up in ways food never will — better relationships with others and yourself, a better social life, less stress, more confidence in your body, the list goes on.

If you’re stuck obsessing with food right now, I feel you. I’ve been there. And there IS a better way. It takes patience and trust to unfu*k yourself from all the diets and unhealthy habits, but there IS freedom on the other side.

And truly, finding freedom from food obsession has been the catalyst for all the most magical things in my life: my relationships, the confidence to run my own business, and so much more.

109: OOPS! I Overate: What to Do (And What NOT to Do!)

109: OOPS! I Overate: What to Do (And What NOT to Do!)

You vow to never diet again. You decide you want to develop a healthier relationship with food and your body. So this means you're going to eat healthy, perfectly balanced meals all the time, right?

WRONG! You are a human being, and the process of learning to eat in the way that best supports your body is a HUGE learning curve.

At some point, you're going to eat more than what makes you feel comfortable, and that's totally normal and OK.

Here's what to do (and what not to do!) when you do "fall off track" with your goals, or find yourself out of alignment with what you want the most.
