    Episode 91 | Deep Red (1975)

🎹 Kicking off December with a Christmas movie... well sort of. There's a Christmas tree! That counts, right? Anyway, you can always find a good excuse to talk about Dario Argento, and this is the perfect opportunity to discuss one of his finest works, Deep Red (aka Profondo Rosso). This was not only the movie that made him an Italian household name, but it also transformed the Giallo subgenre, and went on to become a major influence for North American horror. James Wan being a great example. There is plenty to talk about here, from the rich cinematography, to the violent death scenes, and the delightfully captivating performance by Daria Nicolodi as Gianna Brezzi. As always, we'll also nominate which characters we think were most deserving of death for The Cherry Picker, so make sure to stick around til the end of the episode.

    Episode 32 | Tenebrae (1982)

    Episode 32 | Tenebrae (1982)

👠 This week we are delving into Zack's favorite scary movie, the now 40 year old Italian giallo, Tenebrae. This being a murder mystery slasher that is not as widely known to North American audiences, we will spend the first part of this episode discussing the plot from a non-spoiler perspective, including director Dario Argento's trademark style, the film's LGBTQ appeal, and how the meta nature of the story essentially makes this the Italian version of Scream, but with a very modern 80s vibe. If you've already seen the movie, we will delve into spoiler talk at 45 minutes, where we will discuss the diversity and inventiveness of the kills, how we perceive the "fill in the blanks" narrative and characterization, and as always, we'll choose which character we think was most deserving to die.

Episode 185: 'When I Consume You' & 'Dr. Lamb' w/ Not Your Final Girl

Episode 185: 'When I Consume You' & 'Dr. Lamb' w/ Not Your Final Girl

Ariel and Candance from Not Your Final Girl are back to talk two movies that had us feeling all sorts of emotions. From a grounded film about two siblings dealing with a demon from their past to an infamous Category III Hong Kong movie that was equal parts disgusting and silly, we were all over the place. But did we like what we saw?

Ariel and Candance from Not Your Final Girl are back to discuss the strangest genre films we could find. This week we have a pair of interesting movies. Our first review takes us to the streets of New York City where we talk about down to earth horror story with otherworldly elements. We then travel across the globe to Hong Kong to talk about exploitation flick that wants to push your buttons.

When I Consume You is the third feature film from Perry Blackshear. We start with a discussion of how much he has improved since he debuted with They Look Like People. The movie is about a sister and brother who lean on each other for support. Just when it looks like Daphne Shaw is getting her life together, a demon from her past comes back to her haunt her.

The story is about the bonds between a brother and sister and has some redemptive qualities, but is it too on the nose? Is Blackshear trying so hard to get his message across that he ruins a good story. We also discuss the performances of the two leads and talk about the recent trend of wild tonal shifts in movies.

Dr. Lamb is notorious even as Category III movies. (We briefly discuss what a Category III movie is and compare them  to similar films in other parts of the world.) It is about a serial killer and what the police discovered after he was caught. It sounds simple enough, but the acts he committed are unbelievably awful. Even worse, Dr. Lamb is based on a true story.

The film is a straight up exploitation film that seems to take joy in disgusting its audiences. Torture, necrophilia, and assault all manage to find their way into the movie. We wonder how the story can get so downright nasty while the production looked beautiful at times. We also question how well Dr. Lamb would do in today's world and if there was an attempt at a deeper story.

Let The Right One In (2008): "A Twilight Contemporary"

Let The Right One In (2008): "A Twilight Contemporary"

We know you’re reading supernatural romance novels in Swedish, Stephenie Meyer!!! There are way too many similarities between Twilight and Let The Right One In (2008) for it to be a coincidence, but there is at least one major difference. Namely, one has sparkles, and the other has a sparkling array of trans and queer characters which makes it the perfect way to kick off our Pride Month Lineup. That’s right, the John Ajvide Lindqvist project follows the sacred rule of vampire media: It’s made for the gays — but that doesn’t mean we don’t have ideas about how it could be even gayer. Come for the trans vampires, but stay for what we’re pretty sure are gay dads.

    Episode 156: Shorthanded at Sundance

    Episode 156: Shorthanded at Sundance

We are at the Sundance Film Festival for this week's episode. The only problem is we are short staffed. Thankfully, an old guest returns. As the fest comes to a close we talk about two genre movies that stood out to us. The first is a polite horror movie from Finland. We then talk about a dark science fiction comedy. We also have an interview with writer and director Riley Stearns.

On its way to Shudder, Speak No Evil played at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie is about a family who meet a couple while there are vacationing in Tuscany. The group hit it off immediately. Things go so well, that an invitation is extended. When Bjorn and Luisa go to meet their new friends, they are in for a memorable trip. We talk about social conventions, the stupidity of horror movies, and when it is possible to relate to a psychopath.

Dual is a science fiction thriller starring Karen Gillam that made its world premiere at Sundance. The movie is about a woman who has been diagnosed with an incurable and fatal disease. In order to alleviate some of the pain for those who hare close to her, she has a clone commissioned. When things suddenly change, her life goes into further disarray.

The movie has a tone that is impossible to place and incredibly dry humor. The two of us also talk about the fascinating performance of Gillam and what seems to be intentionally shallow character development. We try to peel away the layers of one of Sundance's most nuanced releases.

The show also includes an interview with the writer and director of Dual, Riley Stearns. He discusses his inspiration behind the movie, why there is so little violence in his inherently violent movie, and who would win in a duel to the death.

    Episode 145: Listener Request: Terrified (2017)/Lair (2021)

    Episode 145: Listener Request: Terrified (2017)/Lair (2021)

There is a lot going on in this episode. The hunt to replace Blake continues. Can this week's guest remedy the damaged caused by Pablo's audition last week? We also have a listener request from The Sun City Fright Fest: 2017's 'Terrified' from Argentina. Plus, a look at an inappropriate horror movie from the United Kingdom.

Bruce Campbell is an undeniable horror icon. Hallmark Holiday movies have also left their own impression on cinema. What would happen if the two came together? We speak about the upcoming One Night in December which aims to answer those questions. Which one of us will have a full report ready for next week?

Lair sounds familiar enough to be fun. A man slaughters his family and blames it on demonic possession. It seems like a pretty straightforward tale of what is and is not true. Instead, it becomes the wrong kind of creepy, never can figure out what kind of movie it wants to be, and prides itself on things it never really accomplishes. But is it worth seeing?

Our listener request takes us to Argentina and a look at Terrified. This is another movie that seems to forgot about initial premise in lieu of a different story. We talk about how it is like an anthology, the American influence on it, and time jumps in narratives. Plus, its odd connection to Fear Street.

EP 28: The Living Dead Girl (1982)

EP 28: The Living Dead Girl (1982)

Happy one year anniversary to Minki and Tracy as cohosts of this podcast and Happy New Year to all you OFS listeners! Or as the French say it, "Bonne année!" Take a trip back into horror film history as the hosts talk about how the French were a little behind other countries' horror output up until French film director, actor, novelist and pornography filmmaker Jean Rollin released a plethora of exploitation vampire-based films in the 70's and early 80's. This poetic film about the love between two females — one alive and one living dead, recently brought back to life by chemical waste spilling near her tomb — is probably his most notable and as Minki and Tracy agree: a decently entertaining film, if you're not put off by the obligatory nudity.

Check out the episode and feel free to email with suggestions for movies to review in 2018!
