    Be Like Fred

    Be Like Fred

In this week’s episode, Chief Victory Officer, Eric Guy and Chief Joy Officer, Faith Guy, dive deeper into one of our core values, ‘Be Like Fred’ and how we can exemplify Fred Rogers in our lives.  Eric discusses more about one of the Values Index Assessments ‘Altruism’ and how we can benefit ourselves and others with this value.

     Takeaways:

    - People’s motivations vary, but even though you don’t understand it, it doesn’t mean we can’t support others - 5:22

    - It’s not just about taking a values index, but what your values are.

    - Sometimes you have to say ‘no’ - just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. You want your help to be quality, over quantity. 8:00

    - One of our core values, is to ‘Be Like Fred’ to treat others the way they need to be treated - emotional intelligence to be like Fred. 9:45

    - Be more intentional with our relationships and with ourselves.

    - Always prioritize intentional decisions that help other people, not the way we think it should be, but the way they need to be treated. 10:38

    - what it means to us to be like Fred? Kind hearted, selfless, personable, empathetic, listens and hears others, heart for people, servant leader, family oriented, loyal. 11:30

    - How are you encouraging people to be awesome just the way there?

    - Don’t set your own rulebook to your own Agenda. We would have a lot less problems if we set our rulebook on how it benefits others. 20:54

    - Look for a place to put your heart, and use it. Look for simple ways to help people, even just sharing a smile.

     Quotes:

    - We proactively strive to equip others, and each other 12:35

    - Everyone is different, so what am I doing to help people realize that's a good thing 15:00

    - Help people understand just how awesome they are.

    - “Try your best to make goodness attractive. That’s one of the toughest assignments you’ll ever be given” - Fred Rogers - 19:20-

    - Don’t set your own rulebook to your own Agenda. We would have a lot less problems if we set our rulebook on how it benefits others. 20:54

    Fred Rogers & Faithfulness

    Fred Rogers & Faithfulness

During a recent trip to Pittsburgh, Tara geeked out over sets and props from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on display at the Heinz History Center. The legacy of Fred Rogers came to mind this week while she was musing on the weird parable about the shrewd manager. In a world obsessed with wealth and status, she concludes that faithfulness may be the most precious treasure of all.

Tara invites you to join her online discussion group this Lent. You'll be discussing the book A Different Kind of Fast: Feeding Our True Hungers in Lent by Christine Valters Paintner.

CREATIVE AGING : Judy Rubin, Part 1 - Stumbling Into a Passionate Life (Art Therapy)

CREATIVE AGING : Judy Rubin, Part 1 - Stumbling Into a Passionate Life (Art Therapy)

Dr. Judy Rubin a pioneer in the field of art therapy. In Part I of my discussion with  Dr.  Rubin, she explains how she "stumbled into" the emerging field and gradually figured out how to harness the synergistic benefits of the arts and psychotherapy.

Early in her career Judy appeared with Fred Rogers as "the arts lady" on the PBS series Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.  Her training brought her into contact with the renowned developmental psychologist Erik Erikson  and with Benjamin Spock who wrote the hugely influential parenting guide that was the bible for my mother and millions of other parents in the 1950s. Judy, now in her 80s,  is still active, creating and curating documentary films about art therapy.

In Part 2 Judy and I asked Judy to speculate about the power of the arts and then shifted gears to for her advice on aging well.

    I Thank God For You

    I Thank God For You

(Note: We're taking a break from the "Belonging to Him" series for the holiday season and will pick back up with Part 2 on January 17th. This week we’re returning to sermons John delivered while pastoring a church in Honduras with his 2019 Thanksgiving message.) A heart of thanksgiving and gratitude raises our perspective and reminds us about the good stuff we were missing. Likewise, thanking God for his blessings raises our perspective even higher. But what about when we thank God for those around us? Too many live their lives empty of affirmation and grace. They don't know that God loves them unconditionally, that he wants them to come to him as they are and find healing, restoration, and transformation. For our part, we don't often thank others unless it's earned. But God's grace isn't earned, so when we thank God for others, deserved or not, we're simply passing along what God has given us. Live a life of gratitude. Thank God. Thank God for others. You'll be sharing the Gospel in a miraculous new way.

(Ep64) When You Wonder, You're Learning BOOK REVIEW

(Ep64) When You Wonder, You're Learning BOOK REVIEW

This book is for Fred Roger's fans, but for everyone looking to add a little more wonder, hope and curiosity in your life (especially since that was Mr. Rogers specialty).  While this is geared toward parenting and raising the next generation, there are so many takeaways for the average adult to make their lives look and feel more enjoyable.

    My favorite chapters were:

    1. When You Wonder, You're Learning
    2. It's You Who Have to Try It and It's You Who Have to Fall (Sometimes)
    3. Such a Good Feeling

    News Anchor Chris DeRose

    News Anchor Chris DeRose

    Episode 17 -

Chris DeRose is currently living in Billings, Montana and working as a reporter with KTVQ and the Montana Television Network.

Chris started his professional career in Chicago back in 2007. Coming to the Windy City just after college, Chris studied improv and sketch comedy, as well as writing and acting at world famous theaters like The Second City, iO, and Comedy Sportz. He quickly became a staple in the Chicago comedy scene and even help to found the musical improv group Mansical, which still preforms to this day.

It was also during this time, that he was “discovered” while working as a Chicago City Tour Guide onboard a double decker bus. A producer from a local television show spotted Chris and offered him a job on TV. The rest is history. That launched Chris’s career as a daily feature reporter on You & Me, a fun morning television show on WCIU-TV.

During his time at You & Me, Chris logged hundreds of hours both in front of and behind the camera, working on multiple stories at any given time.

He was best known for his live morning features, ‘Did U Know‘ history pieces, comical man-on-the-street ‘Movie Trivia’s,’ and insightful travel segments.

At the end of 2016, Chris moved to Los Angeles, California where he freelanced as an actor, writer and producer. While in LA he also worked as an Associate Producer on the Gilbert Gottfried Amazing Colossal Podcast and as a Studio Tour Guide/ VIP Guide at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Chris is a graduate of McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, and holds a BA in Theater Arts. He was raised in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, a small town just outside of Pittsburgh, which was also home to golf legend Arnold Palmer and television’s Fred Rogers.
