Inside the Rhythms of Philly: Chris Schwartz | Pt 1 | The Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Cyphers Hill and Women in Music Production

Step into the studio with Philly's own music mogul, Chris Schwartz from Ruffhouse and Ruff Nation, as we unpack a treasure trove of stories on Goat Vibes. Experience firsthand accounts of the Fugees' electrifying homecoming and the pulse of Philly that beats at the heart of disco guitar. Engage in a fiery debate over Lauryn Hill's seminal album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,’ its well-deserved top-ten spot on Rolling Stone's list, and its profound resonance with female artists worldwide. The conversation heats up as we dissect the global success of the Fugees and the cultural fusion that skyrocketed them to universal acclaim.

The stage is set for a deep dive into the headwinds female music producers encounter, shedding light on the industry's gender dynamics before and after powerhouses like Missy Elliott took the helm. Chris gives us an insider look at the often misunderstood role of producers, revealing the unseen hands that shape the music we love. We navigate the intricate journey of 'The Miseducation' as our guiding compass, highlighting the delicate dance between artistic integrity and record label politics. Don't miss out on this gripping dialogue that celebrates the victories and untangles the challenges faced by women leading the charge in music production.

    30 Days of Night

    30 Days of Night

We also have special guest and comedian, Gastor Almonte on to roast Pras and talk Fugees fraud. Buckle up and get ready to LOL!

Fugees Part II - Lauryn Hill, The Talent

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill? More like the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill filing her taxes! [cough] SO the joke here is that Lauryn Hill, the only truly talented member of the Fugees, intentionally did not file taxes for FIVE years, which is bad. On the bright side, she got to go to the famous prison from Orange Is the New Black. Tax evasion isn’t all we cover in this episode, in fact, there’s so much more… Lauryn Hill wanted to do good, but sometimes life (Wyclef) just gets in the way. This episode has it all— a love triangle, a big ego getting in the way of true potential, and a few lawsuits here and there!

It is Thursday on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show. We start the show often on bad news but today we want to start with some good news out of New Orleans. Dennis Malik Barnes, a high school student out of New Orleans, LA was accepted to 170 colleges. But there is some bad news for Trump. Rapper and one-third of the legendary hip-hop group Fugees, Pras Michel has been convicted in a political conspiracy case for trying to help China influence the US government. Former First Lady, Michelle Obama is coming under fire from some folks on Black Twitter. In an interview with Oprah, she said she cut some of her friends off once her family made it into the White House. She said everyone can go with her and people are calling her fake. The RSMS crew said that Michelle Obama is absolutely correct and sometimes you have to outgrow people. Also on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, the crew talked about the student loan debt issue in our country. This comes on the heels of Dennis Malik Barnes receiving $9M in scholarship money. They talk about people not feeling that college is worth the money anymore. Jeff Johnson joined the RSMS Crew and gave us Three Things We Need to Know. Jeff highlighted the life and times of the great icon, Harry Belafonte. And Judy Harris-Dupart joins The RSMS Crew AND MUCH MORE!!!

    Episode #28: Wicced (Part 2)

    Episode #28: Wicced (Part 2)

In this part two of my podcast with Wicced, or Kalvin Hang, we reunite in Phnom Penh, sitting down in a corner of a bar tucked away in an alley to talk about his story, live from the Kingdom of Cambodia.

In episode #26, Wicced and I covered how he was born in a refugee camp in Thailand, made his way across the world to settle in California, and then fell into the street life because of his surroundings. Never a naturalized citizen, he ended up in an immigration prison for years and, post 9/11, was deported back to Cambodia – a country he’d never lived, didn’t know the language, and never even visited.

In this podcast, we pick up Wicced’s story when he first arrives to Phnom Penh on “Con Air,” handcuffed and still incarcerated. He eventually is released to family members in the countryside but the transition from modern California to the villages and province life in rural Cambodia is as radical as it gets.

Wicced finds his way to the big city, Phnom Penh, where he settles and immediately starts giving back, helping others, and making an impact. Fast forward almost two decades and Wicced is a community leader, advocate for deportation and immigration reform, social activist who has spoken and attended conferences all over thew world, business man, and family man all the same.

It's a great honor to have WIcced as a friend and little brother, and I thoroughly enjoyed our sit down and chat, including a surprise answer to a question I asked him eight years ago.

I might just have to move back to Cambodia – a place I’ve lived and really love – just to hang out with Wicced more!

I hope you feel the same after listening to this podcast.

    You're So Close

    You're So Close

We did it.  We've made it a whole year.  That's actually more than a decade of hits.  The feeling is mutual- don't spill your drink.  We're making resolutions and you're not gonna like 'em.  Want to learn another language?  Why not try Latin, you can drink while you speak it.   Through the power of friendly conversation, the boys pinpoint the commonality of their high school experience: people touched themselves nearby.  Provability is probable cause, and our cause is probably a tummy issue.  In an unprecedented rant, Michael explains how we got here and why we shouldn't have.  Mahalo, salt life, and good morrow to you.
