The End of the End of History (feat. Luke Savage)

Josiah is joined by Luke Savage (@LukewSavage, Michael & Us, Jacobin) to reflect on the last fifteen years of U.S. electoral politics in light of the current election year: the failures of the Obama administration, the hyperpolitics of the Trump administration, and the attempted 'return to normalcy' of Biden's first term.

    On the Ground in Ukraine

    On the Ground in Ukraine
In September 2023, Michael McFaul and political philosopher Francis Fukuyama traveled to Kyiv to participate in the Yalta European Strategy conference. They met with policymakers from Ukraine, Europe, and beyond; military experts; Ukrainian alumni of fellowship and development programs from the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies; and even President Zelenskyy himself. On World Class, they recap what stood out to them from their trip, what they learned, and the stories from everyday Ukrainians that have stuck with them.

Is Fukuyama Liberalism the 'End of History?' w/ Daniel Bessner | Ep. 156

Is Fukuyama Liberalism the 'End of History?' w/ Daniel Bessner | Ep. 156

What makes neoconservatives different from Cold War liberals? Why did Francis Fukuyama's "The End of History and the Last Man" lament the end of the Cold War? What's classical liberalism? And how do liberals like Fukuyama size up our current historical moment? Dr. Daniel Bessner joins the pod for all that and more.

    A Conversation with Francis Fukuyama

    A Conversation with Francis Fukuyama

Today, the United States faces a seemingly impossible set of global challenges: a dwindling clock on climate change; persistent nuclear proliferation; and democracies under threat from populism and authoritarianism. At home, the situation is no less challenging as inflation, white nationalist extremism, political polarization, and an unending pandemic cloud the future. Rarely has the Republic seemed so fraught and in jeopardy. Now is the time for clear headed analysis and prescription.

33 - The End of the End of History feat. Philip Cunliffe and George Hoare

33 - The End of the End of History feat. Philip Cunliffe and George Hoare

I talk to Phillip Cunliffe and George Hoare about their new book The End of the End of History.

In 1989, Francis Fukuyama predicted a boring eternity of liberal capitalism and for nearly 30 years, it looked like he might be right. We had Clinton and Blair. Globalization and apathy. Kurt Cobain. According to my guests, the end of History wasn’t just about politics, it was a whole vibe.

But since 2016, things have started happening that don't quite  fit the pattern and the pundits are losing their minds. Do Brexit, Trump, and the new politicization signify the end of the end of History?

We chat about how the political zeitgeist has changed in recent years and what that may hold for the future.

Phillip Cunliffe and George Hoare are, along with Alex Hochuli, co-hosts of the Aufhebunga bunga podcast and co-authors of The End of the End of History: Politics in theTwenty-First Century.

China's Political Order - Francis Fukuyama & Barry Naughton

China's Political Order - Francis Fukuyama & Barry Naughton

Professors Fukuyama and Naughton trace the origins of the Chinese state, its historic economic modernization, and how the current Xi Jinping era is challenging assumptions and theories about political order and decay. They also discussed the relationship between political freedom and technological innovation and roles of China and US in global leadership.

Dr. Francis Fukuyama is professor of political science at Stanford University, where he directs the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies Dr. Fukuyama is the author of the landmark book on international relations, The End of History and the Last Man. His recent work is equally grand in scale and influence, titled Political Order and Political Decay: From the Industrial Revolution to the Globalization of Democracy.

Dr. Fukuyama delivered the 2018 Sokwanlok Distinguished Lecture on China at UC San Diego, in which he presented his latest research on China's infrastructure investment as a development strategy domestically and the basis for its ambitious Belt-and-Road initiative abroad.

Dr. Barry Naughton is the Sokwanlok Chair of Chinese International Affairs at the School of Global Policy & Strategy. As one of the world's most highly respected economists, he is an authority on the Chinese economy with an emphasis on issues relating to industry, trade, finance and China's transition to a market economy. Dr. Naughton has written the authoritative textbook "The Chinese Economy: Transitions and Growth," and has most recently edited the volume titled "State Capitalism, Institutional Adaptation, and the Chinese Miracle."
