The Art of Explaining Farewells | Mortician Victor M. Sweeney on Fatherhood, Death, Balance

The Art of Explaining Farewells | Mortician Victor M. Sweeney on Fatherhood, Death, Balance

There are a million idioms about death: It's "the only certainty in life." It's "the end of the road." It's "the great equalizer." But even as adults, death can be impossibly difficult to understand and process, let alone to know the best way to explain death to our kids. Mortician Victor M. Sweeney joins the conversation to share his wisdom on how to answer our kids' questions, and why it's important to include them and be honest with them rather than try to shield them or protect them from grief. Stick to the end for a segment on good and bad death scenes in children's movies!

Episode 91 of Modern Dadhood gets right down to business with Adam and Marc chatting about discussions they've had with their kids around the concept of death. They share about their own experiences with attending funerals, and how they've broached the subject when their kid have brought it up. They introduce Victor M. Sweeney into the conversation. Victor is a dad of 4 who has worked in the funeral industry for the last 15 years, earning the reputation of a sought-after funeral director and mortician. Victor opens up about his career, the relationship between his line of work and his family, and some ideas on how to include young people in the death process.

Post interview, Marc names a number of death-related scenes in kids movies and the guys rate them on a "helpful or hurtful" scale, debating whether the scenes could support a kid's understanding of death, or simply traumatize them.

Working the Puzzle of Grace Turner Cannarr with Special Guest - Kate Erickson

If you listened to the Halloween episode where Molly and I told the story of a young, powerless nun from Fresno, California who’d been haunting church property for YEARS, then you’ll recall how our pursuit to understand Sister Irenita’s discontent went where we could’ve never predicted. All we knew when we set out is that her story needed to be told. And then we prayed we’d given her rest and peace finally.

Well, today’s episode is much the same. There is someone that passed away decades ago that came on the spiritual radar of my guest. Together, we are endeavoring to shine a spotlight on her life, in part to honor the dead, but also in hopes it will land on the ears of someone out there who has a missing puzzle piece or two. Join us on this unpredictable and jaw-dropping journey.

Superfans of Curious Cat will recognize my guest from our Christmas memories episode where she shared her unforgettable story. She is an author and blogger, with a growing list of publishing credits to her name including Chicken Soup for the Soul. Welcome to the show, Kate Erickson!

Loss, grief and coping over Christmas with Funeral Director Kelly Scott

Loss, grief and coping over Christmas with Funeral Director Kelly Scott

NOTE: This episode contains discussion of death, grief and stillbirth. Listener discretion is advised.

There’s a lot of reasons why Christmas and the New Year can be difficult, stressful and affect our mental health.

Our guest for this episode is Kelly Scott, the current Victorian President of the Australian Funeral Directors Association and also its National Senior Vice President.

Kelly is the General Manager of T J Scott & Son Funeral Directors based in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria – it’s a family business, which was established by her great-grandfather Thomas John Scott in 1938. She works alongside her father John Scott, and brother Daniel and has been in the profession for more than 25 years.

Kelly sees grief and loss up front and works with people during the most difficult time of their lives.

We thought she’d offer insightful living experience of the how the Christmas and New Year can be a particularly tough time. And we were interested to know more about how funeral directors play a role in supporting individuals and communities. It’s an area of support that may not be front of mind when we think about mental health and wellbeing.

#3 Bridget Halfyard’s Story: The Impact Of Hockey And Not Letting Anything Steal Your Joy Through Tough Times

#3 Bridget Halfyard’s Story: The Impact Of Hockey And Not Letting Anything Steal Your Joy Through Tough Times

In this episode Bridget talks about the role hockey played in her life and her health journey. Growing up in a family that was very involved in hockey, the love came naturally. Bridget talked about her childhood and what it was like being the baby of five children in the family. She was born and raised in the Greater Toronto Area but eventually moved to Alberta. Her passion for hockey is evident throughout her story as she always played on a school team and even went to Switzerland for a year to play on a team!

Bridget discussed her love for learning and her education journey. She has a Masters Degree in Divinity from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from the University of Waterloo, then continued to Mount Royal University to become a Licensed Funeral Director in Alberta. Later in her life she became very ill. She was unable to work and could hardly get out of bed. The only thing that she was able to do was to assistant coach hockey in Cochrane for the female team (my team). After a lot of pain and talking to many health professionals she found out that she had a rare type of cancer. Bridget explains the challenges but also the great things that have come from all her health struggles.

Bridget also has so much love and compassion for those who are grieving as she has grieved many losses herself in her lift. She lost four family members very close to each other and experienced different types of grief with the loss of each of them. Her passion now is to share the life story of many as her role as a Funeral Celebrant and help others navigate through this difficult grievance time.

Throughout our conversation Bridget talks about her love for hockey, her healing process after her cancer, advice on how to deal with grief and so much more.

The loss of a loved one is something that, even in normal times, can be incredibly difficult and strenuous on your mental health. Funerals and wakes can be essential to the grieving process, but they have to be done differently to adhere to guidelines around close contact due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Brian McElroy of Brian McElroy Funeral Directors talks about how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted funerals.

The Two Trishes: Best Friends on Loss and Living to the Fullest

The Two Trishes: Best Friends on Loss and Living to the Fullest

What is like to lose a spouse? How have attitudes around death changed over the past decades? In this upbeat but heartfelt episode, Karen and Liz host Liz’s mom and her best friend (both of whom are named Trish!) for a conversation filled with laughter, wisdom, and real talk about end of life attitudes. Liz’s mom explains why she doesn’t fear death and how she feels about her daughter being a funeral director. The other Trish talks about moving on after a loss and wonders what she’ll look like in the next world. Both women tell us what they want for their own farewellings, and what three items they’d pack for the afterlife (hint: shoes and handbags!). A lighting round reveals their feelings about everything from open caskets to telling jokes at funerals and whether it’s cool to play rock and roll music at a farewelling. They share the lesson that life has taught them--to treat yourself well and enjoy the ride!

During the conversation, Liz’s mom touches on how she felt when she first learned her daughter wanted to become a funeral director. If you’d like to listen to Liz’s whole story, check out this episode that features her journey toward finding her passion in life...helping others through death.

LJNRadio: I Want To Be A - Funeral Director
Some careers, like this one, will always be necessary due to the certainty of death. Thus, we're taking a look at the role of a funeral director by speaking with Jzyk Ennis, funeral director for Carr Funeral Home in Alabama – and an instructor in the mortuary science program at Jefferson State College. Jzyk describes the details of this position to Tim Muma, including what personality works best, why the role is so important, and which myths should be put to rest. Children and even some adults fantasize about finding their dream job. Sometimes they don’t know what it is or how to get there. This show will walk our starry-eye job seekers through the reality of how to fulfill their life’s goal of becoming exactly what they want to do.
