Applying Human Factors in Scuba Diving with Gareth Lock | S2E17

Gareth Lock sits down with Jay to discuss all things, 'Human Factors.'

Gareth Lock is a retired senior officer in the RAF, having spent 25 years flying Hercules transport aircraft, involved in flight trials and R&D, and a Systems Engineer/Requirements Manager.

He left the RAF in 2015 setting up the Human Diver to bring human factors knowledge and practice from aviation, oil & gas, healthcare and academia into the sports, military, scientific and commercial diving domains. He has since taught more than 500 people face-to-face, 2000 people online, published a book, and produced a documentary, all about applying human factors, non-technical skills and a Just Culture to diving.

He provides HF advice to the British Diving Safety Group and co-chairs the Natural History Dive Safety group which advises on diving safety to the UK media sector. In terms of diving, he was trained primarily through GUE up to Tech 2, CCR 1, and was the head of QC for the organisation for a number of years.

BPL #3: Counter-Errorism and A Culture of Safety with Gareth Lock

BPL #3: Counter-Errorism and A Culture of Safety with Gareth Lock

My guest today is Gareth Lock.  Gareth spent 25 years in the Royal Air Force as a flight instructor, a navigator on C-130 Hercules, a systems engineer and a requirements manager. Following his retirement from the RAF in 2015 he started work in high-risk industries teaching Human Factors and Crew Resource Management (CRM).  Eventually Gareth turned his attention to diving, applying a military systems approach to diving risk management by creating an organization called The Human Diver which is focused on what they describe as Counter-Errorism. Specifically, Gareth and his team provides training globally to high reliability and high-risk organizations on leadership, culture, and practical measures to improve operator safety.  In 2019 Gareth led a team of military experts to undertake a review of UK military diving with the goal of improving diver safety. Gareth has worked with the US National Parks Service Submerged Resource Centre (Denver, CO), National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd (NZ), and the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (USA) to provide human factors training and high-performance team development courses.

Gareth is the author of the book Under Pressure – Diving Deeper with Human Factors which looks at case studies of near disasters and applies academic theory to understanding how we can better communicate and lead those in high risk/high reliability units.

I am excited to have Gareth on because his views of human fallibility, although rooted in diving, have broad lessons to teach anyone who leads others, especially those working in high-risk areas.

Mike Mason - The Human Diver, Australia - S03 E01

With over 20 years as a fighter pilot under his belt, Mike Mason currently teaches pilots of the Australian Air Force how to hone their skills and use the aircraft they are flying as a weapons platform.  Human Factors is used on a daily basis to achieve the goals these men strive for, so its fair to say that Human Factors is pretty much second nature to Mike.  Armed with this and Gareth Lock introducing HF to the diving industry; Mike touched base with Gareth and began to learn about the Human Diver and how he could get involved.

Initially learning to dive in the UK, Mike now works in his spare time as a Dive Master at Lets Go Dive Adventures, Nelson Bay.  Following Gareth's tutorage he is also now part of the Human Diver instructional team and is bringing Human Factors to Australia.

Mike has planned a FREE introductory zoom meeting on Thursday 17th Feb at 7:30pm (AEDT) for anyone wishing to learn more about what Human Factors is and how you can get involved in the courses that Mike will be providing.
