Ep 69 - Where the Crawdads Sing

Ep 69 - Where the Crawdads Sing

Where the Crawdads Sing is a 2022 American mystery and drama film based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Delia Owens. It was directed by Olivia Newman from a screenplay by Lucy Alibar, and was produced by Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Daisy Edgar-Jones leads the cast featuring Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, Michael Hyatt, Sterling Macer Jr., Jojo Regina, Garret Dillahunt, Ahna O'Reilly, and David Strathairn. The story follows an abandoned yet defiant girl, Kya, who raises herself to adulthood in a North Carolina marshland, becoming a naturalist in the process. When the town's hotshot is found dead, she is the prime suspect and is tried for murder.

Episode 256: ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ with Ellen Weatherford

Episode 256: ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ with Ellen Weatherford

We’re joined by a host of Maximum Fun’s own ‘Just the Zoo of Us’ to talk about a zoologically inspired film that still remains very much about humans, for better or worse. On top of that, she’s got an insider’s take on what it would really be like to make out in a coastal salt marsh.

Then, the whole gang talks about their favorite courtroom drama movies (it’s related, we swear).

...about The Believer (2001) with director Henry Bean

...about The Believer (2001) with director Henry Bean

Henry Bean, the writer/director of “The Believer” which is based upon the true story of a New York Jew who became a Long Island Nazi and killed himself after being outed by the New York Times…insists his film is a comedy. Bean (and producer Christopher Roberts) join the podcast to unpack the film which launched Ryan Gosling’s film career.

Directed by Henry Bean. Starring Ryan Gosling, Summer Phoenix, Theresa Russell, Billy Zane, Garret Dillahunt, Joel Marsh Garland, Glenn Fitzgerald, A.D. Miles, Eilzabeth Reaser, Tovah Feldshuh, Judah Lazarus and, in a brief un-credited appearance, Natasha Leggero

How is the world wrong about this movie?

From Andras: As a comedy, this film isn’t an easy one to laugh with but once you get its wavelength…once you know laughter is permissible…it only gets darker. Imagine Polanski doing an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” with a young Ryan Gosling and then decide if it’s something you want to see, or notsee.
