S1EP192 I've Been Afraid To Share This...

S1EP192 I've Been Afraid To Share This...

I was scared, initially, to share this with all of you today, because what I'm going to talk about can be difficult for some people to reconcile or understand.

Ultimately, I made the right decision, both in the past to share this same information with family, friends, and even our child's school, and now, when I'm sharing it with you.

I'm glad I was strong enough then and now to be able to do that. Self-love and self-care aren't selfish - taking care of yourself means you are better equipped to take care of those around you and be resilient (not resistant) in the face of change.

They talk about how it breaks the negative cycle of anxiety for people with hand limitations, preventing worries about fatigue or inability to orgasm.

[00:31:48] They mention that some users found comfort in the huggable nature of the toy, which helped them overcome anxiety and negative thoughts during self-pleasure.

[00:32:22] Heather shares that the design process debunked their assumption about gender preferences in sex toys. They realized that men who thought they didn't like vibration hadn't actually tried it and found that vibration could be a better option for those unable to get an erection.

[00:33:00] They discuss the importance of involving disabled people in the design process and how this approach led to unexpected positive consequences in their design.

[00:36:23] Heather talks about their plans to have a range of different toys and products to cater to various needs in the market. [00:39:00] Andrew explains how their design provides a comforting, emotional experience beyond just sexual pleasure, leading to a deeper understanding of pleasure-based sexuality.

[00:43:41] They discuss other companies in the market working on sex toys for disabled individuals, such as Hot Octopus

[00:45:11] Andrew shares the importance of communication, consent, and sense education for disabled individuals, especially when dealing with doctors, medical professionals, and caregivers.

[00:48:00] They discuss the lack of education around sexuality for disabled teenagers and the need for parents to have open and honest conversations with their children about their bodies and desires.

[00:53:00] They emphasize the significance of communication, especially for disabled individuals who need to navigate intimate conversations about their bodies and needs.

[00:57:13] The interview concludes with thanks and recommendations to check out Handi's website, book, and podcast.

    S4 E7 International Day of What - For International Non-Binary People’s Day

Season 4 of the Grow Your Mind Podcast includes some bite-sized morsels of gold. Our bite-sized episodes are under 5 minutes during which two kids unpack a dilemma or the ethics of an idea. This bite-size, our hosts try to get their heads around words - if they really matter that much and if we give them too much power or too little.

This episode was created for International Non-Binary People’s Day on July 14, 2023. And the hosts of the show also discuss if we have too many international theme days and the significance of this one in particular. They kids are both trying to understand why words in this context might be so crucial.

Please note, non-binary is an umbrella term for gender identities that sit within, outside of, across or between the spectrum of the male and female binary. A non-binary person might identify as gender fluid, trans masculine, trans feminine, a-gender or bi-gender.

At Grow Your Mind we know that self-expression and being able to completely bring and be your whole self at work, in school or in the community is vital for enduring good mental health.

Did you know that Grow Your Mind is a wellbeing program you can get into your school? The Catholic to Jewish pipeline

    The Catholic to Jewish pipeline

Who knew there was such a thing? Well, Laurel Lehman discovered it along her conversion journey when, in college, her pastor told her there was a "well-trodden path" through the Episcopal Church to Judaism. And that's where she ended up. Apparently even though Bible study was never her thing, the intense pedantry we embrace and employ in our Torah study discussions really rang her bell. And so, while following an obsessive need to understand whether or not there was an “h” at the end of a transliterated Hebrew word, Laurel discovered her nascent Jewish soul. Laurel, welcome home.

Some of the names you heard in this episode include Rabbi Aaron Miller and Rabbi Eliana Fischel, whose rabbinical duties at Washington Hebrew Congregation include teaching adult education classes such as the 12 Jewish Questions Laurel mentions in the episode.

Abraham Joshua Heschel was a Polish rabbi and philosopher, deported from Germany by the Nazis in 1938, whose writings about Jewish spirituality, work on interfaith dialogue, and active presence in the American Civil Rights Movement made him well-known and respected among leaders across faiths during his lifetime.

    GLOSSARY:

Tsuris: Yiddish for aggravation or distress.

Pedantic: to be annoyingly concerned with minor details, formal rules, or correcting small errors, especially as a way to show off knowledge.

Minion: A group of 10 people, the minimum amount of Jewish adults (traditionally men) that is required to say certain prayers that must be said communally.

Challah: the braided egg bread especially traditional to Ashkenazi (of Central or Eastern European descent) Jews and eaten on holidays, especially Shabbat, the Hebrew word for "sabbath."

Tzedakah: often translated as “charity,” the word actually means “justice.” While “doing tzedakah” may involve giving money or time to charities, it’s based on the idea that everyone is entitled to certain things in life, like enough food to eat, shelter and dignity, and helping to provide those things is not charitable, it’s balancing the scales of justice.

Mitzvah: often translated as “good deed,” the word actually means “commandment,” but has expanded to impart the idea that doing good deeds or "doing the right thing" is not a favor; it’s not optional, it is required.

G’mar Chatimah Tovah: (also spelled “g’mar chatima tova”) the greeting said at Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) meaning “a good final sealing” to wish someone a good year to come by being sealed in the Book of Life.

Kabbalah: A form of Jewish mysticism that became widespread in Provence and Spain in the 12th and 13th centuries and, among other things, involves searching for secret knowledge and hidden meaning in texts.

Tikkun Olam: meaning “world repair,” is a concept that all human beings are responsible for one another and the world, and for repairing harm and damage through their actions, big or small.

Hanukkiah: the 9-branched candelabra used to celebrate Hanukkah

What Is Gynosexuality? Understanding Another Gender Identity Spectrum!

What Is Gynosexuality? Understanding Another Gender Identity Spectrum!

This week we have a wonderful guest, Jenny Rarick from the US and they are currently living in Hofu-shi, Japan. Jenny identifies as Gender Fluid & Gynesexual, this is the main topic in the curious world of gender identity spectrums with Tiffany!

Tiffany and Jenny met through Pride house in Shinjuku, which is a LGBTQ+ community that provides both physical and mental relaxation to be able to express one’s Gender & Sexual identity without judgement. We learn from Jenny’s introduction that her gender identity depends on the situation and day. The conversation dives into Jennys experience in Japan, what she loves about the country, the cultural differences, dating experiences and the challenges they face as a foreigner and with their Gender identity. Jenny expresses how they are not ashamed of how they represent themselves in the world. Jenny mentions that being LGBTQ+ isn’t defined by a person's fashion, and want to be treated like everyone else without the extra steps.

Jenny was born in the City of Indianapolis in 1989, and lived in the small city of Muncie. Jenny double majored in Environmental Science and Japanese, and minored in Astronomy. They undertook a one-year study abroad program at Tokyo Gakugei University. Jenny has a Master's degree in geology (specifically planetary science) and a graduate certification in University Education and Teaching. They were accepted into the JET Program in October of 2021, and they hope to stay in Japan to continue their position in JET for another two years or so. They hope to begin a career in university administration, preferably in international programs.
