Wu-Tang: An American Saga - Protect Ya Neck (S2, Ep. 6)

Wu-Tang: An American Saga - Protect Ya Neck (S2, Ep. 6)

Happy Wine Wednesday and Happy Wu Wednesday! Candi is with me this week to talk to y'all about a show you should absolutely be watching, Wu-Tang: An American Saga.

I was drawn to this show because I love Wu-Tang Clan so very, very much. We get into our history with the group and what their catalog has meant to us.  But let me be VERY clear, you do not have to be a Wu-Tang Clan fan (although, why wouldn't you be?) nor do you have to even know who Wu-Tang is (again, why wouldn't you know?) to enjoy this show because at its core, it is excellent storytelling and equally amazing acting.  Good television is good television!

Normally, I would do a discussion about the pilot episode as a gateway for listeners to a show. But I couldn't resist the spectacular episode 6 of season 2 - "Protect Ya Neck" - for the topic of this discussion.  It perfectly exemplifies why this show is much see television. And Candi, who had not watched any of the series before, agreed that it was a perfectly fine introduction to the show and she did not feel lost - so take the leap! Listen to our discussion and check out the episode. And once you check out the episode, go back and start from the beginning. Depending on your country, it will be available on either Hulu or Disney Plus.

I timed this release to coincide with the Season 3 premiere. Season 3 is the final season of the series, so I wanted to honor it by discussing one of the strongest episodes of the series to hopefully get this great show on your radar. This is a cast of superstars and I'm so happy that this series introduced me to each and every one of them.

It made my heart so full - which you'll hear in my terrible attempts at dropping some of my favorite Wu verses - to do this episode as a love letter to both the rap group I love so very much and the brilliant, talented cast who brought this story to life.

Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a good time!

The biggest music industry legend you've (probably) never heard of shares his incredible story w/ Ron Sweeney.

Ron Sweeney, entertainment attorney, manager, consultant, and former record executive. He may be the biggest music industry legend you've never heard of.

Named one of the top music lawyers by Billboard Magazine on multiple occasions, Ron has done major deals for artists like James Brown, Eazy-E, Sean "Puffy" Combs, and Lil Wayne.

As a senior executive with Sony, Ron controlled a $70 million A&R budget and was directly responsible for signing several platinum and gold-selling acts.

Ron is driven by his strong belief that creative people should own what they create.

In the wake of George Floyd's murder, Ron helped to bring about meaningful change in an industry that has exploited people of color since its beginning.

#186 – What Does It Take to Create a Successful Hip Hop Brand?

Today I’m wicked happy to welcome hip-hop star, lyricist, comic scribe and good friend Esoteric to The Alden Report podcast. As a Boston based underground hip-hop artist, Esoteric is half of the hip hop duo 7L & Esoteric, a third of Czarface and is a member of underground hip-hop collectives Army of the Pharaohs and Demigodz. Along with 7L and Wu-Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck, Esoteric formed the hip hop supergroup Czarface in 2013 when they released their acclaimed debut studio album, Czarface. This album was followed by Every Hero Needs a Villain in 2015 and A Fistful of Peril in 2016, both of which were also praised by critics. In 2018, Czarface released a collaborative album with MF DOOM titled Czarface vs Metalface and their newest album Czarmagedon just recently dropped this year.

We take an inside look into what it takes to make it in the world of hip hop over the last 20 years and we take a deep dive into Esoteric’s approach to creating, merchandising and promoting the Czarface brand as well as his collaborations with some of the biggest names in hip hop and street art. The inspiring, endearing and somewhat surprising backstory of the creation of the Czarface brand is itself worth the listen. Lastly, we learn the fascinating story of how Esoteric got verified and received a blue checkmark on Instagram with the help of none other than the one and only Gary Vaynerchuk.

Thank you very much to Esoteric for joining us this week on The Alden Report.

EMP EP 44 Esoteric Music and Collaborations with Tom Brown and Will Skeaping part 1 of 2

EMP EP 44 Esoteric Music and Collaborations with Tom Brown and Will Skeaping part 1 of 2

In this, Episode 44 (which is part of Series 5) of the SyncLodge Exploring Music Podcast we explore the history of the legendary Lex Records, esoteric music and great, unusual collaborations, mashups and breaking new ground in music with Tom Brown and Will Skeaping. Part 1 of 2.  For more information visit www.lexrecords.com

Tom Brown is the owner of Lex Records, established in 2001 and Lex Films established in 2011. Tom started his career at Warp Records where Lex was initially a Warp sub-label. Tom took it fully independent in 2005. Lex is best known for releasing music by Danger Mouse, MF DOOM, Neon Neon and BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah.

In 2011 Lex started production on a series of short films written by Alan Moore and directed by Mitch Jenkins, the films were screened at film festivals worldwide and are now licensed to AMC's Shudder. Lex Films have produced Alan Moore and Mitch Jenkins first feature film THE and is developing an original animated series STRATA by comic book creator Tommy Lee Edwards and I Speak Machine  (here’s a concept art reel https://youtu.be/t8lbZqXI3V0).

And joining Tom is Will Skeaping who studied History or Art and Italian at the University of Manchester and studied History of Art at the University of Bologna is the co-editor of best-selling Extinction Rebellion handbook 'This Is Not A Drill', which is published by Penguin Books. Will is considered a full-time activist.

When he’s not haunting meetings and social occasions as the ghost of climate & ecological future, Will is a Creative Strategist specializing in integrated, scalable, creative brand development; building platforms and campaigns that connect with audiences through culture and technology. That all sounds impressive, but where is the music in all of this? Well, he started his professional career with many years in the music industry, holding positions of radio promotions at Warp Records and then, label manager at Lex Records. Plus, he apparently has amazing taste in music and his parents are cool oddball musicians.

The music for this episode is by the Lex Records recording artist GILA from the EPs Trench Tones, and 3 Riders, including tracks Rider 3 (Absent Root), Rider 1 (Dang Wind), I Lose, and Throw This Away. For more information please visit www.lexrecords.com

The EMP theme music players are Joe Schirl on bass guitar and Peter Mayerhofer on hand pan. The music played through the conversation was composed, engineered and mixed by Lionel Lodge.
