Wu-Tang: An American Saga - Protect Ya Neck (S2, Ep. 6)

Wu-Tang: An American Saga - Protect Ya Neck (S2, Ep. 6)

Happy Wine Wednesday and Happy Wu Wednesday! Candi is with me this week to talk to y'all about a show you should absolutely be watching, Wu-Tang: An American Saga.

I was drawn to this show because I love Wu-Tang Clan so very, very much. We get into our history with the group and what their catalog has meant to us.  But let me be VERY clear, you do not have to be a Wu-Tang Clan fan (although, why wouldn't you be?) nor do you have to even know who Wu-Tang is (again, why wouldn't you know?) to enjoy this show because at its core, it is excellent storytelling and equally amazing acting.  Good television is good television!

Normally, I would do a discussion about the pilot episode as a gateway for listeners to a show. But I couldn't resist the spectacular episode 6 of season 2 - "Protect Ya Neck" - for the topic of this discussion.  It perfectly exemplifies why this show is much see television. And Candi, who had not watched any of the series before, agreed that it was a perfectly fine introduction to the show and she did not feel lost - so take the leap! Listen to our discussion and check out the episode. And once you check out the episode, go back and start from the beginning. Depending on your country, it will be available on either Hulu or Disney Plus.

I timed this release to coincide with the Season 3 premiere. Season 3 is the final season of the series, so I wanted to honor it by discussing one of the strongest episodes of the series to hopefully get this great show on your radar. This is a cast of superstars and I'm so happy that this series introduced me to each and every one of them.

It made my heart so full - which you'll hear in my terrible attempts at dropping some of my favorite Wu verses - to do this episode as a love letter to both the rap group I love so very much and the brilliant, talented cast who brought this story to life.

Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a good time!

#186 – What Does It Take to Create a Successful Hip Hop Brand?

#186 – What Does It Take to Create a Successful Hip Hop Brand?

Today I’m wicked happy to welcome hip-hop star, lyricist, comic scribe and good friend Esoteric to The Alden Report podcast. As a Boston based underground hip-hop artist, Esoteric is half of the hip hop duo 7L & Esoteric, a third of Czarface and is a member of underground hip-hop collectives Army of the Pharaohs and Demigodz. Along with 7L and Wu-Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck, Esoteric formed the hip hop supergroup Czarface in 2013 when they released their acclaimed debut studio album, Czarface. This album was followed by Every Hero Needs a Villain in 2015 and A Fistful of Peril in 2016, both of which were also praised by critics. In 2018, Czarface released a collaborative album with MF DOOM titled Czarface vs Metalface and their newest album Czarmagedon just recently dropped this year.

We take an inside look into what it takes to make it in the world of hip hop over the last 20 years and we take a deep dive into Esoteric’s approach to creating, merchandising and promoting the Czarface brand as well as his collaborations with some of the biggest names in hip hop and street art. The inspiring, endearing and somewhat surprising backstory of the creation of the Czarface brand is itself worth the listen. Lastly, we learn the fascinating story of how Esoteric got verified and received a blue checkmark on Instagram with the help of none other than the one and only Gary Vaynerchuk.

Thank you very much to Esoteric for joining us this week on The Alden Report.

For more information on Esoteric and Czarface, you can visit: https://www.czarface.com/ and follow him on Instagram at: @czarface_eso

    El Michels Affair

    El Michels Affair

Leon Michels grew up in New York, picking up the Saxophone while he was in high school. His teachers introduced him to early jazz from artists such as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington.

It was his encounter with the musicians that would go on to form "Budos Band" that introduced him to the world of deep funk and afrobeat, and from there Leon would go on to experiment with his own recordings, initially on a multitrack reel-to-reel recorder a friend had gifted him, and eventually to putting out his own music under the "El Michels Affair" moniker.

Leon's career has also seen him work on projects for high profile artists such as "Lana Del Rey" and being sampled by producers working with "Beyonce".

On this episode Jay and Jesse dive deeper into Leon's back catalogue as well as his approach and workflow to making music.

"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.

Due to Young Jaimé being hungover, we're a little late with the new episode. The Gents are excited to talk all things Super Bowl and even more thrilled to celebrate the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning the big game! The Gents are excited to celebrate the local Tampa team making history under the G.O.A.T.
