Judges 19-21 | How Bad Can It Get?

Judges 19-21 | How Bad Can It Get?

Judges 19-21 tells the story of a Levite and his concubine who were traveling through the tribe of Benjamin.

Chapter 19 tells the story of a Levite and his concubine who were traveling through the tribe of Benjamin. They were given shelter by an old man in Gibeah, but during the night, a mob demanded that the Levite be handed over so that they could sexually assault him. The old man offered the mob his virgin daughter and the Levite's concubine instead. The concubine was then brutally raped and left for dead. The Levite took her body and cut it into twelve pieces, sending them to the tribes of Israel.

Chapter 20 describes the response of the tribes of Israel to the murder of the Levite's concubine. They assembled a great army and demanded that the tribe of Benjamin hand over the guilty parties. However, the tribe of Benjamin refused, and a war ensued. The first day of the battle saw the Israelites suffer a great defeat, but on the second day, they were able to turn the tide and defeat Benjamin.

Chapter 21 tells of the aftermath of the war against Benjamin. The other tribes of Israel realized that they had essentially destroyed one of their own tribes and were concerned about the survival of the tribe of Benjamin. They decided to allow the remaining Benjamites to abduct women from the city of Jabesh-gilead to use as wives, in order to ensure the survival of the tribe.

It is important to note that this story is descriptive rather than prescriptive. It does not promote or condone the actions of the characters involved, but rather serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of lawlessness and moral decay. The story illustrates the consequences of disregarding the principles of justice and righteousness, and the need for good governance and leadership.
