Judges 19-21 | How Bad Can It Get?

Judges 19-21 | How Bad Can It Get?

Judges 19-21 tells the story of a Levite and his concubine who were traveling through the tribe of Benjamin.

Chapter 19 tells the story of a Levite and his concubine who were traveling through the tribe of Benjamin. They were given shelter by an old man in Gibeah, but during the night, a mob demanded that the Levite be handed over so that they could sexually assault him. The old man offered the mob his virgin daughter and the Levite's concubine instead. The concubine was then brutally raped and left for dead. The Levite took her body and cut it into twelve pieces, sending them to the tribes of Israel.

Chapter 20 describes the response of the tribes of Israel to the murder of the Levite's concubine. They assembled a great army and demanded that the tribe of Benjamin hand over the guilty parties. However, the tribe of Benjamin refused, and a war ensued. The first day of the battle saw the Israelites suffer a great defeat, but on the second day, they were able to turn the tide and defeat Benjamin.

Chapter 21 tells of the aftermath of the war against Benjamin. The other tribes of Israel realized that they had essentially destroyed one of their own tribes and were concerned about the survival of the tribe of Benjamin. They decided to allow the remaining Benjamites to abduct women from the city of Jabesh-gilead to use as wives, in order to ensure the survival of the tribe.

It is important to note that this story is descriptive rather than prescriptive. It does not promote or condone the actions of the characters involved, but rather serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of lawlessness and moral decay. The story illustrates the consequences of disregarding the principles of justice and righteousness, and the need for good governance and leadership.

When Ish-Bosheth heard of this he berated Abner and Abner in wrath swore that he would give the kingdom of Israel to David for this. However, as Abner was leaving, Joab whose brother he had killed, murdered him in secret. Thus setting up the chaotic opening of the united Israel.

'Ho Ho Ho: Word Docs find the Sanity Clause'

Well, that's it for the grand old dystopian wonderland of 2020. Bring on the New Year! This week, the Word Docs are reflecting on the year that's been: deadlines missed and goals hit, unexpected delights and inevitable tipsiness, real estate bought, sold and fantasised about, and the fact that Amy never delivered on the promised scones. We're making plans for 2021 and even 2022: New bathrooms! Secret disco rooms! Starting our own magic writing school, where Alex will be potions master! Those bloody scones. And we introduce a new segment: Is this illegal? Amy takes the role of Alex's parent; Alex sings, undaunted; Sean promises to DJ for New Year's. Pour yourself a rum and Milo (don't ask) or a cheeky Moscato and settle in for some festive cheer from the three wise elves (is that a thing?).

    1-5. Boy Emperor

    1-5. Boy Emperor

The young Emperor Fulin disliked the Manchu influence. He wanted to move away from that and wanted more outside input into his reign.

In 1651, he issued an anti-corruption edict. He tried to root out corrupt practices and officials.  He ordered more Han Chinese into the royal household.  He brought back eunuchs. Eunuchs had been disfavored in the Qing Dynasty.

He had deep religious beliefs. He befriended a German Jesuit priest by the name of Adam Schall von Bell.  Later in his life he shifted from Catholicism to Buddhism.

He died in 1661.  There were claims he died of smallpox.  Some claim he was murdered. In his last will and testament he named his third son as his successor.  His last will and testament also named four Manchu nobles that would be co-regents for the new young Emperor.

Fulin's reign was far too short to make an honest assessment of it.  It was largely overshadowed by his powerful and larger than life uncle, Dorgon.  Fulin's greatest legacy was he fathered the next Emperor. Maybe the greatest of all the Qing Emperors, and the subject of my next episode.
