The apostle Paul told the Corinthians to “desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy” (1 Corinthians 14:1, NKJV). What is the gift of prophecy, and why is it important? Dr. David K. Bernard explains how this spiritual gift operates and the value it brings to the church.

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul discusses spiritual gifts, emphasizing their diversity within the body of Christ. Paul stresses the importance of love as the guiding principle for using these gifts without elevating one over another.

1 Corinthians 13 is known as the "love chapter," Paul eloquently describes love's supreme value over spiritual gifts. He articulates its patient, kind, selfless, and enduring nature, contrasting it with temporary gifts. Paul emphasizes the lasting significance of love, declaring it the greatest virtue that should underpin Christian relationships.

In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul continues discussing spiritual gifts, focusing on speaking in tongues and prophecy. He encourages prioritizing prophecy over tongues for the church's benefit unless there is interpretation. Paul emphasizes the importance of clear communication, providing guidelines for orderly worship and stressing the significance of intelligible communication for mutual edification during gatherings.

And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD." Isaiah 11:1-2

Do YOU have the gift of prophecy?  Hospitality?  Tongues?  Preaching?  Faith?  Well, today we discuss exactly what the spiritual gifts are and why they’re absolutely essential to the body of Christ.  We were created to be dependent on the Holy Spirit and interdependent upon other believers – which  is how the true Christian church is supposed to operate.  Each set of gifts found in the scripture passages below is given for distinctive reasons -- for ministry, for empowerment, and for equipping fellow Christians.  We cover what happens when all the Christians in a church are operating in their spiritual giftings -- and what happens if they aren't!

Leadership matters. Words matter. Our gifts matter. The gifts God has given us are meant to be used, so if God has given a gift of leadership or encouragement He wants those gifts to be used for the good and growth of His kingdom. Jesus leads through example, being a protector, guardian, and aid to those He is leading. Through His kindness, comfort, and counsel, He also encourages many to take positive steps. "Come follow me," (Matthew 4:19) is an invitation to model Jesus' leadership and encouragement as we imitate Him in the way we serve one another and the world around us.
