    753 Denying What Power? (2 Tim. 3:1-5)

    753 Denying What Power? (2 Tim. 3:1-5)

This sermon looks at 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Matthew 7:21-23, and Titus 1:15-16 in order to determine what power Paul is telling Timothy that some people deny. It’s so important that we always read and interpret Scripture in context, else we will come up with all sorts of fanciful doctrines. I critique the modern day Charismatic Church in this sermon, and I do not apologize for it.

Gifted Part 8: Apostles and Prophets: Foundational Gifts (1 Cor. 12:27-28 Eph. 4:11-13)

Gifted Part 8: Apostles and Prophets: Foundational Gifts (1 Cor. 12:27-28 Eph. 4:11-13)

What are apostles and prophets? An apostle is "one who is sent as a delegate, an ambassador, a sent one". The capital "A" apostles were the ones who walked with Jesus, but there is still much need for apostolic gifting in the church today, laying healthy foundations and carrying the big-picture, kingdom culture of God. Apostles equip the church in being an apostolic people. Prophets help the church understand what God is saying to this group of people at this place and time, while being under the authority of the Bible. They are necessary in helping the church become a prophetic people, aware of God's presence and in step with His Word. God loves us enough to give guidance, direction, and correction to His people. Together, apostles and prophets equip the church to build well.

    Gifted Part 6: Distinguishing Between Spirits (1 Cor 12:10, 1 John 3:24-4:6)

    Gifted Part 6: Distinguishing Between Spirits (1 Cor 12:10, 1 John 3:24-4:6)

How can we tell when something is inspired by God, or when what is happening may be "off"? The gift of distinguishing between spirits has been defined as the supernatural ability to recognize what spirit (divine, human, or evil) is causing a particular activity. The Spirit of God will not deny, downplay or diminish Jesus in any way, and will help us distinguish between what "sounds" good and what is actually from God.

    Gifted Part 5: Tongues and Interpretation (1 Corinthians 12:10; 13:1-2; 14:1-40)

    Gifted Part 5: Tongues and Interpretation (1 Corinthians 12:10; 13:1-2; 14:1-40)

There is a reason Paul gives so much instruction and clarification regarding the complementary gifts of tongues and interpretation, and why he feels the need to remind the church: "Do not forbid speaking in tongues." Without healthy instruction these gift can seem very subjective or even overly-emotional, and God knows this. In 1 Corinthians 14:1-40 we are given some clear parameters and descriptions of what these gifts are and how to use them. Understanding how the gifts of tongues and interpretation work together to build up the church is of critical importance in welcoming and using them well in the local church.

    Gifted Part 4: Prophecy (1 Corinthians 12:10; 13:2; 14:1-40)

    Gifted Part 4: Prophecy (1 Corinthians 12:10; 13:2; 14:1-40)

The gift of prophecy is very simply speaking or relating what God is saying, whether that is future-oriented or present encouragement. Healthy prophetic ministry in the church is rooted in love for one another. We are all challenged in Scripture to eagerly and earnestly desire this gift with the intent to build up and encourage the church. In a healthy, accountable culture (both to one another and to God), we can learn to speak God's life-giving purpose into one another's lives.

Can the Gift of Prophecy Be Fallible?

Can the Gift of Prophecy Be Fallible?

Every year we hear of numerous prophecies by people who call themselves "prophets" or "prophetesses," yet these prophetic words do not come true. While the Bible has clear definitions for true and false prophets, many charismatics argue that there is such a thing as "fallible prophecy" in which supposed words from the Lord were mistaken by the prophet. What should we make of this? In this episode, Costi Hinn breaks down the true gift of prophecy and the office of prophet, while laying out 5 dangers with fallible prophecy from Dr. Nathan Busenitz.

Miracles and Unanswered Prayers with Craig Keener

Miracles and Unanswered Prayers with Craig Keener

Does God move supernaturally in our world today? Should we expect miracles? These are questions that New Testament scholar Craig Keener investigated, documented, and wrote about in his book Miracles Today. The book is fascinating and a bit frustrating in some ways, but also compelling and deeply researched. Dr. Keener has also written a ridiculous amount of scholarly work on the New Testament, and we go into some of that expertise for our Patreon supporters, so subscribe if you're interested in some NT geeky time. It's good fun.

    Speaking in Tongues

    Speaking in Tongues

One of the most controversial topics in church today is speaking in tongues, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Is it real? Does it matter? What does the Bible say about it? Today Pastor Devin seeks to answer these questions in the second sermon of "Uncomfortable Conversations"

    Following the Spirit

    Following the Spirit

We all clearly have different gifts of talent and ability. Some of us are more suited to working outside with our hands, and some of us are better working with conceptual tasks. Some of us are more musical, athletic, or strategic in our daily activities depending on our unique, personal natures. But there are also differences in our spiritual gifts that we may not think of as often. Some of us are more gifted in wisdom, while others may be better in the realms of knowledge, for example.

This Sunday we will reflect on our spiritual gifts. Sometimes a discussion on spiritual gifts touches on task preferences. There are spiritual gift inventories that help people choose the kinds of work they would like to participate in based on the kinds of tasks they like to perform. But the Apostle Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians talks about spiritual gifts differently. The traits he refers to in his letter are attributes like wisdom, knowledge, prophecy, and healing. These are things I don’t think we can necessarily learn to be good at by following a certain training curriculum; they come to us as gifts from the Holy Spirit. What would you say are your spiritual gifts, and do you feel like you are making good use of them?

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Father Persing

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Father Persing

(August 8, 2021) “This week, you and I, are challenged to be the best for God, to follow the example of Christ in our love for one another.” With these words, Father Charles L Persing closes today’s homily. Father Persing reminds us that we need to set the example of faith ourselves, so that the others would witness it and follow Christ with us.

The message Saint Paul has for us is that Jesus is always walking before us, setting that example.  But “what we see in Jesus, we need to see in one another,” says Father Persing. “Instead of looking for negativity, we come here to be one Body and one Spirit … we testify from whence our gifts come, and we are not afraid to say where we find our strength – the Eucharist and Jesus Christ.”

Accessible | The Tearing of Two Veils

Accessible | The Tearing of Two Veils

Have you ever had a conversation with someone where they just talk about themselves the whole time but never ask about you? Sometimes we treat God in the same way - we pray to share our thoughts, dreams, and wishlist, but we don't get to know Him. Or conversely, we learn everything that we can about Who He is, but we are not willing to open our hearts to Him. Our relationship with Him is a two-way street. He has given us access to Him, allowing us to learn more about Him, but we also need to tear the veil over our hearts.
We want to have an intimate relationship with God, unveiling ourselves so that we are seen, known, and loved by choice. I don't know about you, but I definitely want to be invited to the Wedding Banquet someday, and not just as a guest, but as part of the Body of Christ, His Bride, seeing Him face-to-face.
Let's not take for granted the access that we have to our God, and also grant Him access to our own hearts.
