LastPass breach shows risks of remote work | Ransomware hits US Marshal Service | GoDaddy's spear phishing attacks relies on con artistry, psychological tactics

    Last Pass breach

In this episode of the Security Squawk podcast, the hosts analyze the latest cybersecurity incident with LastPass. LastPass, a popular password manager, suffered a data breach in August 2021. The company initially reported that the attackers had gained access to the backup server, but not the encrypted vaults containing user passwords. However, a recent update reveals that the attackers were able to obtain valid credentials for a senior DevOps engineer, giving them access to LastPass' data vault, among other things. The vault contained encryption keys for customer vault backups stored in Amazon S3 buckets. It is unclear whose vaults have been compromised, but the incident highlights the risks associated with remote work and the need for stronger security measures.

Ransomware attack on US Marshal Service

In this episode, the speakers also discuss the ransomware attack which hit the US Marshal Service. The attack targeted systems that contain sensitive law enforcement information, administrative information, and personally identifiable information. It is not known if it was a targeted attack, but it is believed that the attacker exfiltrated data before the attack. It is unlikely that they will turn over the keys for the ransom, especially after the FBI's recent successful takedown of Hive. Additionally, News Corp was breached over a year ago, and employees are only now being notified. It is believed that the Chinese government was behind the attack, and some personal information was compromised. The affected parties are being offered two years of free identity protection and credit monitoring.

    GoDaddy Security breach

Further, the hosts discuss a series of security breaches that have recently occurred at GoDaddy, including spear phishing attacks and compromised passwords that have resulted in the theft of sensitive information belonging to thousands of customers. Despite being labeled as the work of "sophisticated threat actors," the author argues that most hacking attacks rely on con artistry and psychological tactics, rather than technical know-how. The article also highlights the importance of domain privacy and the risks associated with transferring domain names to unverified individuals.

BoConcept and Calligaris NYC Owners Pioneer the City’s Furniture Industry

With roots in Malaysia, immigrant Niki Cheng blazed her way through the hustle and bustle of NYC’s competitive job market and established a career that would leave lasting footprints in a niche industry. From a failed attempt at being a waitress to immediate success in furniture sales, Niki saw untapped potential and grabbed the reins to open her own furniture store — a U.S. location of the Denmark brand BoConcept, selling sophisticated pieces at affordable prices. This single store quickly sparked the establishment of the Furniture District in NYC. After growing BoConcept into its second location, nine more stores followed across the city within a decade. Pivoting a different direction, Niki and her business partner husband continued their entrepreneurial journey and launched a U.S. location of the Italian brand Calligaris in NYC. Even with the global pandemic, their new furniture business brought in an unexpected increase in sales. As Niki continues to build two furniture brands in the big city, her savvy sales advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to do everything with the heart — you’ll gain trust when you focus on helping the customer find the right product that fits their needs and budget, and they’ll become customers for life.

Finding Home Sweet Home for Homeless Trans Folks

Finding Home Sweet Home for Homeless Trans Folks

Ava Pipitone’s story began on a farm in rural Maryland. Although growing up in the avatar of a male body and thriving in boyhood, Ava always felt disconnected. After graduating college and going out into the world to experience how different cultures treated gender, Ava realized America offered no space for trans folks (including themselves) to thrive, contribute or even exist. They searched for the trans community and found it while working at Red Emma’s, a local Baltimore coffee shop where she ended up getting equity in the company and becoming one of the few trans business owners in the city. But as they got to know their customers on a deeper level, they realized they'd missed truly seeing the level of housing instability amongst their own community. So they decided to do something about it. After trying to find temporary home placements in spare bedrooms for homeless trans folks, they found a more efficient way to make it happen by launching Host Home — a tech platform that seamlessly manages temporary living arrangements for homeless folks while waiting for housing opportunities. As Ava chats with Scott about the unique journey they had as a trans entrepreneur, they remind all aspiring entrepreneurs that launching a business can be so much more than the pursuit of money; it’s the pursuit of making a difference. Trans people are powerful business owners for a reason — they’ve learned to navigate the ultimate unknowns, overcome obstacles to resiliently make space for themselves and bring unique wisdom to the world of business. It’s time for investors and entrepreneurs to support the trans community in a meaningful way.

Bringing Gender Neutral Fragrances for the LGBTQ+ Community

Bringing Gender Neutral Fragrances for the LGBTQ+ Community

With the influence of his parents running a Black-owned business in small town Kentucky, Nick Yeast was destined for his own entrepreneurial journey. As an adult in the travel industry, he decided to take a fragrance making class while visiting South Korea and curated his unique scent that poured in the compliments. This spark of confidence moved him to not only launch Nick Ricardo Collection (a gender neutral fragrance line), but also to shake up the fragrance industry by filling an empty gap: offering LGBTQ+ representation and removing the definitions of gendered scents. But being radical in such a gender-targeted industry isn’t the only challenge Nick currently faces — he also faces the challenges of the pandemic and systemic racism in our country. He continues to fight the uphill battle and use entrepreneurship as a tool to close the generational wealth gap to honor his family, the Black community and the LGBTQ+ community. Nick reminds everyday entrepreneurs that they can be bold and challenge the industry without changing themselves.
