When Do You Need An MRI For Tennis Or Golfer’s Elbow?

When Do You Need An MRI For Tennis Or Golfer’s Elbow?

MRI for Golfer's and Tennis Elbow Podcast Cover

When should you consider getting an MRI if you have a Golfer’s or Tennis Elbow injury?

Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom answers this question in this podcast episode.

Which also covers several key, related questions including:

    • Do I need an MRI to diagnose my Tennis or Golfer's Elbow?

    • When is the right time to get an MRI scan – If at all!?

    • What will the MRI tell me... what do the results actually mean?

    • And are there any good alternatives?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI for short) is considered the “gold standard” when it comes to imaging or “seeing” what’s wrong with soft tissues.

If there are any significant defects in your tendons the MRI will reveal these in the greatest detail now medically available.

This is the best objective measure (although not the only measure) you can get of how severe the damage to your tendons may be…

(Tendon damage being the essence of what Golfer’s and Tennis Elbow are.)

But there are several things to take into consideration about if and when you really need to go to the significant trouble involved in getting an MRI

Here's where you can go to read the accompanying article, with links to articles referenced in the episode:

Overcoming Angler's Elbow: Fishing-Related Elbow Pain

Overcoming Angler's Elbow: Fishing-Related Elbow Pain

    Angler's Elbow Podcast Cover Image

Why is it that casting, reeling and other fishing motions can sometimes end up causing a lot of inner or outer elbow pain – and sometimes even debilitating tendon injuries?

In this episode Allen Willette, of Tennis Elbow Classroom, explains the underlying causes as well as how to treat these frustrating fishing-related elbow injuries.

Including how to avoid the common mistakes that can impede your recovery and prolong your misery.

"The pain sometimes begins with a whisper, like the gentle 'swish' of fly line through the misty, morning air…"

"You start to notice a minor ache or little 'pinch' at your elbow as you cast or reel, especially when you've hooked a feisty bass or rainbow…"

"And your arm may feel heavy and tired at night after a long day on the water, perhaps with a dull, burning throb at your inner or outer elbow."

"Is it anything to worry about? – Or just a minor nuisance? – Another sign you're getting older, perhaps? Or is this something more?"

    Do You Have Pickleball Elbow?

    Do You Have Pickleball Elbow?

    Pickleball Elbow Podcast Cover

If you play Pickleball and are starting to experience pain in your elbow area, look out! You may be coming down with a case of “Pickleball Elbow!”

Hi, this is Allen Willette with the Tennis Elbow Classroom podcast, and I want to help you get off on the right track, understanding and treating your Pickleball injury whether it's your inner or outer elbow that's hurting – and whether it's Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow.

Because, if you have a tendon injury in your elbow area, it's most likely going to end up being classified as either Tennis or Golfer's Elbow.

And I'd like to help you avoid the myths, and misconceptions and all the mistakes based on them – mistakes which derail a lot of sufferers and cause them a great deal of unnecessary suffering.

It's no joke! One of my student/members who plays Pickleball in Arizona (where the sport is apparently VERY popular) recently told me that half the people he plays with are experiencing elbow pain!

Well, maybe not HALF – but a large percentage of Pickleball players are either among the walking wounded, all wrapped up in braces or bands – or they're dropping out of matches like flies.

Why are so many players getting injured?...

    Dry Needling For Tennis Elbow

    Dry Needling For Tennis Elbow

Podcast Cover: Dry Needling For Treating Tennis Elbow

Dry Needling is a treatment for Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow and other conditions that involves repeatedly sticking a needle into tissues (usually muscles or tendons) which are not healing properly in the hopes of stimulating a healing response.

Or for the purpose of "deactivating" highly-irritable, pain-causing spots in muscles, known as a 'Trigger Points.'

The needle in question can be either a Medical Hypodermic needle – (which is used in this case to penetrate the tissues but without injecting anything)...

OR it can be an Acupuncture needle, which is often referred to as 'Trigger Point Dry Needling' or 'Intramuscular Stimulation' (IMS) and which is a much more common practice.

It seems unfortunate, though, that the term Dry Needling has come to refer to two very different treatments – utilizing two very different types of needles...

After all, there's a very big difference between a thin, filament Acupuncture needle and a Medical Hypodermic Syringe!

So, in this episode, I'm going to cover separately what I think should be considered two distinct treatments.

The 3 Key Principles Of Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercise

The 3 Key Principles Of Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercise

Are you looking for which exercises to do when you have Tennis Elbow – And which exercises are best?

You're in the right place – But let me ask you this, first: Are you sure it's the right time to begin those exercises?

Because, I have to tell you, there IS a right time and a wrong time to begin your Tennis Elbow rehab exercises!

And I'd to help you avoid the common mistake of starting them at the wrong time – Or in the wrong order, because it can make a huge difference to your healing and recovery!

So, let's talk about three key principles – that you won't likely hear anywhere else:

    • Why Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercises are NOT the top priority – in the beginning of your healing process,

    • How and why starting those Exercises right away often aggravates the injury,

    • WHAT the BEST Exercise to begin your Tennis Elbow rehab IS (when it is time to start)

    • (And why that exercise is NOT actually Wrist Extension)

So, put down those weights, bands or rubber bars for a minute – and let's reconsider this thing.

Because after 15 years of experience in treating Tennis Elbow and coaching people online, I've seen WAY too many people get these 3 things wrong…

(along with all the other treatment mistakes, like taking pills, icing, wearing a brace and getting Cortisone Shots)

The Muscular Causes Of Tennis And Golfer's Elbow - Tennis Elbow 101

The Muscular Causes Of Tennis And Golfer's Elbow - Tennis Elbow 101

What causes Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow?

What's the insidious process by which repetitive motions, (whether related to work, tennis, golf or gardening) end up injuring you and causing you so much pain?

In this episode we talk about the central role muscles play in causing the injury. (It's no small part!)

First of all, Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow are muscle AND tendon injuries…

And although the tendon is where the most serious part of the injury is – (And what essentially defines the injury) let's make sure we understand what the difference is between a muscle and a tendon.

Why does that matter? Because, although muscles and tendons are two parts of the same unit, they are made of different materials – and they have difference purposes.

Another big difference between them is that they heal at different rates. Tendons, unfortunately, heal much more slowly than muscles...

The Tennis Elbow Classroom Treatment Strategy

The Tennis Elbow Classroom Treatment Strategy

Golfer's and Tennis Elbow treatment strategy podcast cover art

Do you have a Tennis Elbow treatment plan? A consistent strategy based on how to – And just as importantly – How NOT to treat it?

Here's one based on straight-forward principles of healing and my decade-plus experience successfully treating Golfer's and Tennis Elbow sufferers.

Unfortunately, the typical Tennis Elbow treatment protocol tends to be overly focused on alleviating symptoms – Not on healing.

(And we always have to remember they are not the same thing – Sometimes they are mutually exclusive.)

If you completely heal your injury there should be no more pain – but there are a lot of things you can do to relieve pain (by suppressing it, usually) that have no positive effect on healing your injury, and which, can impede healing – or even worsen your injury.

So, it’s not surprising that so many Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers find themselves scrambling from treatment to treatment and from cure to so-called “cure” – without a real strategy or a deeper understanding of the injury, in desperate search of relief…

This is especially true in the beginning – Before you understand how serious your Tennis Elbow injury really is…

Before you realize it's not going to just get better permanently with a little rest, a few pills and some ice…

And before you suddenly get it!... You're trapped in a terrible, vicious cycle!

So if you need a plan for escaping that vicious cycle – What I call, “The Tennis Elbow Triple Trap” this podcast episode is for you.

And if you'd like to learn more about the Tennis Elbow Classroom treatment strategy, please follow this for more detail

Selfie Elbow: A Painful, New Injury? (Yes And No)

Selfie Elbow: A Painful, New Injury? (Yes And No)

Is Selfie Elbow a new medical condition?

Is your arm or elbow starting to hurt from taking large numbers of selfies?

You may have the latest Tech Injury, many have begun to call "Selfie Elbow."

(Selfie Elbow is pain in the elbow caused by holding ones arm fully extended and putting one's wrist in an awkward position to snap pictures of oneself over and over – AKA taking “selfie” pics.)

This podcast episode still applies, though, whether you're starting to feel pain in your elbow, wrist or fingers – And whether it's related to typing, texting OR selfie taking using your computer, tablet OR smartphone.

Because it appears that Selfie Elbow is just another, newer form of Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow, and not truly a unique, new medical condition.

(Lateral Epicondylitis or Medial Epicondylitis, or better yet, Epicondylosis or Epicondylopathy)

The same principles apply to this “new” Overuse Injury as with other Repetitive Strain Injuries.

    Do Golfers Get Tennis Elbow?

    Do Golfers Get Tennis Elbow?

Do Golfers also get Tennis Elbow? Yes, quite often, in fact.

Curiously, a glance at golf magazine websites, medical studies and surveys suggests that not only do golfers get Tennis Elbow, they actually suffer this injury more often than Golfer's Elbow!

(Although, statistically, there are many more cases of both injury types among people who don't play tennis or golf!)

In this podcast Allen Willette, 'Tennis Elbow Tutor' covers these related questions and more:

    • What's the difference between Tennis and Golfer's Elbow?
    • How and where do golfers develop this injury?
    • Why do golfers suffer Tennis Elbow more often than Golfer's Elbow?

Working Out Wisely With Tennis Elbow

Working Out Wisely With Tennis Elbow

Should you continue working out with weights or doing any kind of upper-body strength-training exercise if you have Tennis Elbow?

Does it make any difference what originally caused your injury? – Whether it was originally caused by:

    • Weight lifting in the first place?
    • From playing tennis or golf?
    • From computer use?
    • OR from heavy, physical work?

Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom, answers these and other Tennis Elbow related exercise questions in this episode.

Your needs will vary, depending on whether your injury originates from low-intensity / high duration work, like computing…

Medium to high intensity (but shorter duration) sports like tennis and golf…

Or long-duration, heavy, physical work, like construction.

What Are The Best Exercises For Tennis Elbow?

What Are The Best Exercises For Tennis Elbow?

To make a full recovery from your Tennis Elbow injury you’ll need several key strengthening / rehab exercises.

And in this episode, I cover the three best exercises for Tennis Elbow, which one(s) you should start with, and how taking a more indirect approach may be the best way to ease into your rehab.

Because, for some Tennis Elbow sufferers, taking the direct approach that's most often recommended (starting with “pure” wrist extension) is an invitation to more struggle and aggravation.
