Overcoming Angler's Elbow: Fishing-Related Elbow Pain

    Angler's Elbow Podcast Cover Image

Why is it that casting, reeling and other fishing motions can sometimes end up causing a lot of inner or outer elbow pain – and sometimes even debilitating tendon injuries?

In this episode Allen Willette, of Tennis Elbow Classroom, explains the underlying causes as well as how to treat these frustrating fishing-related elbow injuries.

Including how to avoid the common mistakes that can impede your recovery and prolong your misery.

"The pain sometimes begins with a whisper, like the gentle 'swish' of fly line through the misty, morning air…"

"You start to notice a minor ache or little 'pinch' at your elbow as you cast or reel, especially when you've hooked a feisty bass or rainbow…"

"And your arm may feel heavy and tired at night after a long day on the water, perhaps with a dull, burning throb at your inner or outer elbow."

"Is it anything to worry about? – Or just a minor nuisance? – Another sign you're getting older, perhaps? Or is this something more?"

    Do You Have Pickleball Elbow?

    Do You Have Pickleball Elbow?

    Pickleball Elbow Podcast Cover

If you play Pickleball and are starting to experience pain in your elbow area, look out! You may be coming down with a case of “Pickleball Elbow!”

Hi, this is Allen Willette with the Tennis Elbow Classroom podcast, and I want to help you get off on the right track, understanding and treating your Pickleball injury whether it's your inner or outer elbow that's hurting – and whether it's Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow.

Because, if you have a tendon injury in your elbow area, it's most likely going to end up being classified as either Tennis or Golfer's Elbow.

And I'd like to help you avoid the myths, and misconceptions and all the mistakes based on them – mistakes which derail a lot of sufferers and cause them a great deal of unnecessary suffering.

It's no joke! One of my student/members who plays Pickleball in Arizona (where the sport is apparently VERY popular) recently told me that half the people he plays with are experiencing elbow pain!

Well, maybe not HALF – but a large percentage of Pickleball players are either among the walking wounded, all wrapped up in braces or bands – or they're dropping out of matches like flies.

Why are so many players getting injured?...

    Dry Needling For Tennis Elbow

    Dry Needling For Tennis Elbow

Podcast Cover: Dry Needling For Treating Tennis Elbow

Dry Needling is a treatment for Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow and other conditions that involves repeatedly sticking a needle into tissues (usually muscles or tendons) which are not healing properly in the hopes of stimulating a healing response.

Or for the purpose of "deactivating" highly-irritable, pain-causing spots in muscles, known as a 'Trigger Points.'

The needle in question can be either a Medical Hypodermic needle – (which is used in this case to penetrate the tissues but without injecting anything)...

OR it can be an Acupuncture needle, which is often referred to as 'Trigger Point Dry Needling' or 'Intramuscular Stimulation' (IMS) and which is a much more common practice.

It seems unfortunate, though, that the term Dry Needling has come to refer to two very different treatments – utilizing two very different types of needles...

After all, there's a very big difference between a thin, filament Acupuncture needle and a Medical Hypodermic Syringe!

So, in this episode, I'm going to cover separately what I think should be considered two distinct treatments.

The 3 Key Principles Of Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercise

The 3 Key Principles Of Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercise

Are you looking for which exercises to do when you have Tennis Elbow – And which exercises are best?

You're in the right place – But let me ask you this, first: Are you sure it's the right time to begin those exercises?

Because, I have to tell you, there IS a right time and a wrong time to begin your Tennis Elbow rehab exercises!

And I'd to help you avoid the common mistake of starting them at the wrong time – Or in the wrong order, because it can make a huge difference to your healing and recovery!

So, let's talk about three key principles – that you won't likely hear anywhere else:

    • Why Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercises are NOT the top priority – in the beginning of your healing process,

    • How and why starting those Exercises right away often aggravates the injury,

    • WHAT the BEST Exercise to begin your Tennis Elbow rehab IS (when it is time to start)

    • (And why that exercise is NOT actually Wrist Extension)

So, put down those weights, bands or rubber bars for a minute – and let's reconsider this thing.

Because after 15 years of experience in treating Tennis Elbow and coaching people online, I've seen WAY too many people get these 3 things wrong…

(along with all the other treatment mistakes, like taking pills, icing, wearing a brace and getting Cortisone Shots)

Is Acupuncture Effective For Treating Tennis Elbow?

Is Acupuncture Effective For Treating Tennis Elbow?

Acupuncture For Tennis Elbow Podcast Cover

Is Acupuncture an effective treatment when it comes to encouraging the healing process of Tennis Elbow?...

Or is it simply a way to temporarily relieve some of the pain and other symptoms of Tennis and Golfer's Elbow?

Allen Willette tackles this question in this episode of the Tennis Elbow Classroom podcast.

There does seem to be evidence that Acupuncture can reduce the pain of Tennis Elbow...

Acupuncture can generally alleviate many kinds of pain, after all.

And, in that sense, it's certainly a much safer, healthier choice than anti-inflammatory pills and Cortisone shots...

But the larger question is: Can Acupuncture actually help a Tennis Elbow injury heal?

Tennis Elbow Supplements: Helpful For Healing Or Waste Of Money?

Tennis Elbow Supplements: Helpful For Healing Or Waste Of Money?

Supplements for Tennis and Golfer's Elbow

Are there any supplements, including vitamins or herbal remedies for Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow that will help relieve your pain and support your healing process or are they a complete waste of time and money?

It's a question I'm often asked by my members in the forum – and in my practice treating Tennis Elbow sufferers directly.

Many people want to avoid toxic anti-inflammatory pills – for very good reasons, and they're looking for natural alternatives for both pain relief AND to support their healing process.

The problem is that desperate Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers tend to get a little carried away seeking remedy…

And there's no shortage of claims on the Internet (some bordering on the miraculous) about all kinds of vitamins, supplements or herbal concoctions – including:

    • Basic Vitamins: A, B, C and D
    • “Anti-Inflammatory” Herbs: Ginger, Turmeric, Bromelain
    • MSM, Chondrotin and Glucosamine
    • Fish Oil / Veg-based Omega-3 Oils
    • And Collagen Supplements

Sadly, the short answer is that most of these things, beyond basic vitamins, are pointless and a waste of money, for various reasons we explore in this episode...

(At least when it comes to healing tendon injuries like Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow. Not necessarily for other problems.)

REFERENCE – Quoted in the video:

“Vitamin D plays a significant role in the tendon-to-bone healing process by increasing the bone mineral density and strengthening the skeletal muscles.”

Vitamin D And The Immunomodulation Of Rotator Cuff Injury

This study has to do with the Rotator Cuff tendons of the shoulder, and how they need to heal and form strong attachments to the bone after surgery…

But the same principle may apply to Tennis or Golfer's Elbow, because we're dealing with a similar 'tendon attachment' at our elbows.

The Muscular Causes Of Tennis And Golfer's Elbow - Tennis Elbow 101

The Muscular Causes Of Tennis And Golfer's Elbow - Tennis Elbow 101

What causes Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow?

What's the insidious process by which repetitive motions, (whether related to work, tennis, golf or gardening) end up injuring you and causing you so much pain?

In this episode we talk about the central role muscles play in causing the injury. (It's no small part!)

First of all, Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow are muscle AND tendon injuries…

And although the tendon is where the most serious part of the injury is – (And what essentially defines the injury) let's make sure we understand what the difference is between a muscle and a tendon.

Why does that matter? Because, although muscles and tendons are two parts of the same unit, they are made of different materials – and they have difference purposes.

Another big difference between them is that they heal at different rates. Tendons, unfortunately, heal much more slowly than muscles...

Platelet Rich Plasma For Treating Tennis Elbow

Platelet Rich Plasma For Treating Tennis Elbow

In this podcast Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom discusses the pros and cons of Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy in the treatment of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow. Including:

    • Whether there's any evidence PRP is an effective treatment, (based on medical studies)
    • Whether it's worth the price – and the pain afterward (also sometimes during the procedure)
    • And whether there are any better alternatives (other approaches to achieving the same goals.)

    What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy?

PRP (and its less-sophisticated relative, Autologous Blood Injection) are in-office, minimally-invasive “non-surgical” procedures that begin by having a small amount of your blood drawn.

In the PRP procedure your blood is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, by separating them from your red blood cells and your plasma, which is mostly water and Electrolytes.

Then your platelets (along with some of your plasma) is injected into the injured area that's not healing (usually a tendon or ligament.)

Platelets are cells in your blood that are mostly responsible for blood clotting, and they also secrete growth factors that are involved in tissue healing.
