(Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2004)

    ¡Hola Crononautas!

    I ORIGINS/MOOD INDIGO

    I ORIGINS/MOOD INDIGO

This past weekend was just chock full of magical, whimsical women breaking studious, guarded men out of their cocoons. No, not SEX TAPE — I have no idea about how that plot plays out and, besides, that’s not genre. But otherwise, for all their divergent approaches to the material, both I ORIGINS and MOOD INDIGO incorporate the same base theme. After that, of course, anything goes: I ORIGINS continues director Mike Cahill’s ongoing exploration of humanity’s interconnectedness through the tale of a dedicated, eye-obsessed scientist (Mike Cahill) having his adherence to objective reasoning challenged by the mystical outlook of an exotic model (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey) with equally exotic eyeballs; while MOOD INDIGO lets director Michel Gondry explore the artificiality of certain, idealized brands of French romance through the story of how the wacky life of an eccentric inventor (Romain Duris) is overthrown when the health of his wife (Audrey Tatou) is threatened.

Another way to distinguish these films: They aren’t equally successful in their goals. To find out how they fare, click on the player to hear my review for Jim Freund’s HOUR OF THE WOLF.

    Beginnings episode 62: Gabrielle Bell

    Beginnings episode 62: Gabrielle Bell

On today's show we talk to Gabrielle Bell. Gabrielle is a comics artist based in Brooklyn, whose books and short stories have been published on a number of indie presses, from Drawn and Quarterly to Fantagraphics, and in anthologies like Mome and Kramer's Ergot. She also collaborated with filmmaker Michel Gondry on an adaptation of her story "Cecil and Jordan in New York" for the film anthology Tokyo. A few weeks ago, Gabrielle came over to the Manhattan Wrestling Team apartment and got in deep with us about what it means to be creative and interact with your audience, characters as representatives of your sweet id, and creative high school friendships.

On next week's episode, we talk to performer and author Chris Gethard, but ALSO! Don't forget the next Beginnings Live at UCB East. It's going to be incredible with Lizz Winstead (co-creator of The Daily Show and Air America Radio), David Rees (Get Your War On, How to Sharpen Pencils), and musical guest A.C. Newman (The New Pornographers)! Sept. 11th at 8pm!

    Episode 30: Michel Gondry

    Episode 30: Michel Gondry

Movie podcaster and blogger Ryan McNeil of The Matinee Cast joins us for an enlightening conversation on the incredibly creative Michel Gondry.  We focus on his beloved 2nd breakthrough success, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, as well as his anticipated follow-up but widely misunderstood THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP.  In addition, Ryan reviews PICKPOCKET, Jim requests to see more films like RACE WITH THE DEVIL, and Patrick decides to talk about his love of the music video art form, since Gondry had such a tremendous impact and is considered one of the most uniquely conceptual directors.

In a couple weeks, we will be talking about the winner of the listener's poll, Kathryn Bigelow.   Please be sure to leave us a voicemail to play on the show at 224-366-9528.  If you’re a movie blogger/podcaster and would like a guest spot on the show to talk about a filmmaker whose work you admire (or despise). Thanks again for listening and be sure to check out our updated upcoming schedule in the sidebar to see which directors we’ll be talking about soon!  Questions are always welcome via email: directorsclubpodcast@gmail.com

This week, John and I discuss Michel Gondry’s big budget endeavor The Green Hornet, Dominic Sena's medieval escapade Season of the Witch and Gaspar Noe’s metaphysical mind-bender Enter the Void – which is now playing at the Brattle Theatre (brattlefilm.org).

And for our picks of the week, I opt for Robert Rodriguez’s Machete on Blu-ray, while John suggest you check out Hope & Redemption: The Lena Baker Story on DVD.

The episode was recorded “live” at the Trident Bookseller’s & Cafe in Boston.

The total running time is about 40:30.
