We Should Talk About Change, The Natural Evolution of Endings and Saying Goodbye to JessB

When Jess and Jess started this podcast in January 2020, there were a lot of unknowns. They had no idea how the podcast world would receive them, they had no idea that a global pandemic would shut down their studio recordings and they would have to learn how to podcast remotely, they had no idea how many interesting people they would get to interview, and they had no idea how long WeSTAT would go on.

As this episode brings Season Four to a close, it also brings Jess B's part as a co-host to We Should Talk About That to a close, as well. Jess and Jess felt it necessary to honor the spirit of WeSTAT, the work they have done in building the show, and each other, by holding space for an authentic conversation, in studio, for the first time in a long time, and the last as co-hosts.

Endings are excruciating, but sometimes, they are necessary for growth- The Two Jess(es) use this time to get vulnerable about what they mean to each other, what the show has meant for them, and where they are headed in the future.

    June

    June

    June

    June, ohJune!

    You’re arrived

    and far too soon

    in three weeks

    summer will

    have passed

    And September

    will be here

    far too fast

    for the twenty first

    comes,

    the longest day

    and then thereafter

    dearest June

    you will,

    like time

    have flown

    away!

    Lights

    Lights

    Lights

    Across the fading lights

    of earth time,

    the rising fall

    of sunset blue,

    the stars weep

    their tears

    across the southern skies, dreaming,

    singing,

    midnight songs,

    of yearning,

    loss,

    farewells,

    and goodbyes,

    missing the days

    and hours,

    of you.

    For tonight,

    your ship

    has departed,

    with sails full

    with moonlight,

    and silent,

    summer winds,

    memories blown

    from present,

    and future past,

    from the last harbors,

    the outward tides,

    that leaving of home,

    and westwards

    the journeys end

    will bring.

    And so at last,

    upon the promontory,

    beyond

    the lighthouse,

    the last

    of the stepping stones,

    to the dawns

    of another land,

    to waves

    and farewells,

    to a once

    upon this time,

    the last goodbyes

    until the sea

    departs,

    forever here,

    in silence,

    I stand.

What We Can Learn from Saying Goodbye - #88

What We Can Learn from Saying Goodbye - #88

Struggling with goodbyes – something we can all relate to. Over the past year, Trevor Carlson has met some amazing people while trotting around the globe. Although his experiences were usually limited with these world-traveling friends, he has learned to appreciate that the time spent with these people was precious. He has learned that the paths crossed among travelers encourages a tight bond, albeit at times brief. Their journeys may be different, but their desires of seeing new countries and cultures has taught them about their shared values. As long as the time spent with new friends is cherished, saying “goodbye” can be a beautiful experience.

In this episode we will discuss:

    • Sharing our values with like-minded people
    • Learning how to continually say goodbye to loved ones
    • Appreciating the limited time spent with new friends on the road
    • Choosing to surround ourselves with people who bring us joy
    • Remaining aware of our surrounding environment and being in the moment

    Quotes:

“It’s really helped me to understand that there are millions, millions of amazing people in the world who have the same values as you. You don’t have to spend your time with people who don’t share those values, don’t bring you some level of joy and don’t really add any value to your life.” (3:00)

“Every minute is really precious when you’re around these loved ones or your really cherished friends. Every minute is valued as you can see them tick away, knowing that they’re going to come to an end. It becomes more important to look the person in the eye across from you and listen to what they’re saying. They become the priority over checking your work email, updating your Facebook or scrolling through Instagram. I’m guilty of this too! ... I’m not perfect but it has definitely made me more aware and I am more likely to notice what I’m doing, put the phone down and be more involved in what I’m doing. ” (4:33)

“Does this relationship bring me joy? Does this relationship bring value...Do they make me want to strive to be the best version of myself or do they make me feel extremely critical of who I am?” (6:23)

    Episode 3: The Good, Goodbye

    Episode 3: The Good, Goodbye

In this episode, I talk with my dear friend Laurie (@lauricebell) about the goodbyes we've made over a lifetime. Our first goodbye when we were 20, the ones with our college age children, goodbyes with our parents, as well as how some of these goodbyes lead to new beginnings, and how happy we are to be in this together, supporting each other. Please listen in, enjoy, and share with your friends.
