    BLACK BEAUTY COLLECTIVE

    BLACK BEAUTY COLLECTIVE

The idea to create Black Beauty Collective was planted 10 years ago and quickly became a project that was dear to founder and CEO, Leslie Roberson’s heart. The growing ownership and access disparities within the beauty industry posed a deep concern for her. For example, despite spending 9 times more than any other beauty product consumers, black ownership in the space only accounts for 2,5% . Creating a collective to ensure broader impact is Leslie’s solution to this deep-rooted issue.

In today’s conversation, Leslie takes us on a journey of how the idea came to her in the first place, how she’s gone about recruiting the founders who will be tenants at her flagship store, her business model AND her vision for the collective.

Leslie has a corporate career in Talent Acquisition, this is her second venture into entrepreneurship and she’s also a US military veteran. She will tell us how she’s leveraging all these aspects of her background to make the collective a success.

Now I Know My CBDs with Katelynn Nguyen

You've heard of CBD, but what about CBG? CBN? PHA? Katelynn Nguyen, founder of Willow Kay, is here to teach us about all of it. Willow Kay is a green and clean wellness and skincare company offering a variety of formulations to help improve sleep, care for problematic skin, and induce calm. Not only are Katelynn's products devoid of chemicals and endocrine disruptors, her packaging is entirely eco-conscious, having created the world’s first backyard compostable cosmetic jar that can break down into organic matter at any stage during its existence whether it’s on land or water. Katelynn started this business in part to help her niece Willow, who suffered from chronic atopic dermatitis as an infant and had sensitivities to traditional medications. If that sounds like the sweetest thing you've ever heard, you will love listening to Katelynn talk about her genuine passion for making good, earth-friendly products, even when it's hard. We also talk about other things, like Ellie's increased sense of smell, Hyaluronic Acid for your vagina, and yeast infection zombies. We always find a way to keep it weird.

    Quotes:

“Getting rejected from jobs made me realize that I needed to acquire some new skills in order to be able to make a living.”

“I was noticing in other countries, that even at pharmacies, they were having more natural products. Not fantastic, but at that time way ahead of the States.”

“I bought some organic lip balms and they worked fine, but they didn't work great. And the design lacked, it wasn’t aesthetically pleasing at all.”

“Every path you take has its different barriers, difficulties, or challenges.”

“Sometimes family members, friends, loved ones…sometimes they're wrong.”

“You can always play the victim card, but it’s not going to get you very far in life.”

“What you focus on only expands.”

“I wasn't emailing every store that exists. I started researching what I thought would fit, and started looking through the data and what would fit with Henné.”

“No does not mean never, it just means not yet.”

“Sometimes it's almost easier to solve an issue or tackle it when you've not been thinking about it for a while.”

“Sometimes it's good to start just taking action because maybe you have an idea in your head and you don't know which one to start with. Start testing them out. Take it day by day, try out a few ideas, do some research, make some phone calls, send some emails, and you'll be surprised how quickly you'll figure out which ones to cancel out.”
