    67. Green & Sustainable Gift Wrapping

    Hey Green Junkie,

With the holidays upon us, it’s just about time to start wrapping up all those gifts that our loved ones eagerly anticipate.

According to a study from Stanford over 25 million tons of garbage are created during the holiday season and most of that ends up directly in landfills.

That is a ton of garbage!!!

Thankfully, there are some enjoyable and easy ways to wrap gifts that are affordable, fun for the whole family, and also save some waste from filling up those landfills, all at the same time.

In this episode, we will touch on the following:

    • Which wrapping paper can be recycled and which ones can’t
    • What to grab around your home to use as wrapping paper
    • How to reuse things you already have to make custom wrapping
    • How to wrap your gifts in fabrics
    • Creative ways to wrap with old books or sheet music

Sometimes the biggest impact we can have is by teaching children the importance of taking care of the planet in small and simple ways. Ingraining these habits into the next generation will go a long way in combating climate change.

Would Wearing 30 Days Of Your Own Trash Change The Way You Consume? Environmental Activist Rob Greenfield Shows People What That Looks Like

For "Plastic Free July", I talked with Rob Greenfield. He's an environmental activist, humanitarian, writer, adventurer and friend. He chooses to take on extreme projects in an effort to inspire people to want to make a change. His latest project has been to wear all of his trash, by living like the average person, as he says "floating along in the breeze of consumerism". I spoke to him on the last day of wearing 30 days of his waste. Rob tells us all about the experience and the response he got. You might be surprised. We also chatted about how he started on this venture of living a more simple, sustainable life and his numerous extreme projects he's taken on over the years. I had the chance to see him literally grow over the 30 days while he was here in Los Angeles and watch his commitment and laser focus for this project he completed and why it's so important to him. Listen in to hear his sustainable story and why "sustainability to me is freedom".

    Self-care: A Slow Living Deep-Dive

    Self-care: A Slow Living Deep-Dive

In another 'pre-pandemic’ yet very timely episode, Brooke and Ben dig deep in to ’self-care’ and all it represents, as well as how they apply it in their own lives.

Slow living and self-care have kind of become synonymous in the mainstream, featuring a lot on Instagram and in books and blogs and magazines. There is undoubtedly a lot of crossover between the two, but there is also a lot of consumerism and privilege tied up in the modern-day vision of self care. In this episode Brooke shares her thoughts on that, and then she and Ben dig deep in to what they think self-care is, and why it's so important.

    They explore:

    • The origins of self-care as a movement and how society defines self-care now
    • What it means to advocate for yourself
    • How they each manage self-care now
    • Where the words ‘want’ versus ‘need’ fit into self-care
    • How important exercise is within their own self-care
    • The enemies of self-care
    • What self-care looks like for them in a practical sense

The second half of the episode features Season 4 friend of the show Amy and follows up on her waste-reduction efforts in beautiful rural Maine. Amy shares how she's taken on board a lot of the changes and experiments we discussed in our last chat, including some composting ideas (and attending a composting conference!), and the ways she's finding balance between working from home and spending time with her family.

April Hepokoski on creating a zero-waste, nature-based classroom

April Hepokoski on creating a zero-waste, nature-based classroom

This week Brooke is joined by early-childhood educator April Hepokoski for a fascinating discussion about all things child-led and nature-based learning.

April is the founder and teacher at The Little Barnyard Preschool in Duluth, Minnesota, where she centres learning around being outside in nature every single day. April also founded a zero-waste living group on her local community, where she shares tips and tricks for living with less waste as well as lobbying the city council to make changes in her town.

There are so many parallels between slow living and the approach of nature-based learning, and April is a prime example of someone taking action into their own hands in every aspect of her life. We hope you enjoy this inspiring (and practical) chat about learning, nature and grassroots change.

    Questions featured in this episode:

    1. When did you first become interested in zero-waste living?
    2. How did you structure a localised zero-waste living group?
    3. What is the philosophy or mission of The Little Barnyard Preschool?
    4. What caused you to combine child-led learning with nature-based learning?
    5. What does nature-based learning look like on a day-to-day basis?
    6. What do parents say? What benefits and differences do they see?
    7. How can people begin to bring this philosophy into their own home if there are no nature-based learning offerings in their area?
    8. What can educators do to start to bring nature-based learning into their school? Any resources or recommendations on how to start the conversation?
    9. Do you have any tips for bringing zero-waste principles into the classroom?

The stress-free guide to zero-waste living with Anita Vandyke

The stress-free guide to zero-waste living with Anita Vandyke

Our guest on the podcast this week is Anita Van Dyke: zero waste activist, literal rocket scientist, medical student, author and all-round breath of fresh air. Anita brings a new, more practical perspective to the zero waste lifestyle, and in this episode she and Brooke talk about her journey to living a zero waste life, the impact of her cultural and familial upbringing, tips for helping people get started and so much more.

Anita talks about her life a few years ago, as a self-described ‘maximalist’, and how she went from working in corporate engineering at the height of her career to being burnt out, and having to quit her job and step back for six months to think about what she wanted in life. She talks about her cultural background, as her parents immigrated to Australia from China during the communist regime, and how this informed both her value of money, power and status in her early 20s and her work ethic, but also how her upbringing cemented her understanding of living minimally. She talks about her discovery of this very podcast during that six month break, and how this, combined with other resources, volunteering, meditating and economic necessity started her on the journey of simplifying her life and decreasing her waste.

Now Anita is studying medicine and has just written a book, called ‘A Zero Waste Life: In 30 Days’. Her scientific background means her approach to zero waste living is incredibly practical, with a creative, problem-solving bent to help you make small changes in your everyday life. Her focus is accessibility, and Brooke loved her three-tiered approach to any issue: dipping your toe in, living low waste and living zero waste.

This podcast is full of so many nuggets of wisdom and great ideas for approaching a slower, more simple life. Start where you are, take stock, ask for help and stick to the 80/20 rule are just some of our main takeaways. What about you? Be sure to share your favourite bits with us on Instagram and Facebook. Plastic: Say No to the Big 4

Plastic: Say No to the Big 4

Last year Ben and Brooke tried their hand at Plastic Free July. They tried to cut their use of plastics to zero for a full month, alongside tens of thousands of other counter-cultural, environmentally-minded souls. And… it was a bit of a bust.

The truth is that they were vastly unprepared. They hadn’t really thought through their daily needs or systems, and hadn’t gathered the required replacements for many of their plastics, which meant they were left high and dry when time came to go food shopping. Or buying takeaway. Or grabbing a coffee. Or living, really.

Over the next four Mondays they’re going to take a deep dive in to the issue of excessive plastic use and what small changes you can make - starting today - to reduce plastic use over time. In part this series is timed to coincide with Plastic Free July, but also because there is an emerging desire for change that wasn’t apparent even this time last year. Mostly people are just overwhelmed and confused by where to begin, and that’s where this series comes in.

Today Ben and Brooke offer you some simple ideas to stop using the Big 4 single use plastics altogether, with just a few easy swaps and a couple of habit changes. This includes saying no to:

    • drinking straws
    • takeaway coffee cups
    • plastic water bottles
    • plastic shopping bags

In today’s show they offer reusable solutions to each of these products, as well as ideas on how to re-train your brain to remember to use them!

There’s a great list of resources and links over at http://www.slowyourhome.com/170 as well as the full blog post so be sure to head over there.

    Enjoy!
