Eating for a happier planet with Alexx Stuart

Eating for a happier planet with Alexx Stuart

Sometimes, in our efforts to do better by the planet, our communities, our families and ourselves, we can get tangled in knots - especially when it comes to food. Today’s guest, Alexx Stuart, is (thankfully) here to talk us down from this way of thinking. She and Brooke look at food choices through the lens of finding common ground, avoiding absolutes and applying critical thought, and it’s a delightful breath of fresh air.

    We hope you enjoy it!

Can you live slow in your 20s, or is burnout inevitable?

Can you live slow in your 20s, or is burnout inevitable?

Slow living has positive applications for everyone – no matter their age, life circumstance or work situation. All too often however, it’s presented from the perspective of people in their thirties and forties who are well-established in their careers, relationships, family and home situations, who are making changes in order to slow down (usually after burning out or reaching a crisis point).

In this week’s episode Brooke chats with Lauren, who is in her mid-twenties and wants to know whether slow living is something you need to ‘earn’ in your twenties by hustling and burning the candle at both ends, or whether there are things she can do now to help “build the right foundations for a slow life from the start of my career, rather than course-correcting later?” Lauren also wants to know what specific things she might want to prioritise now in order to set herself up for an intentional life.

Brooke and Lauren talk about what success looks like, and why it’s important to develop your own definition of it, as well as how to reframe the sense of overwhelm that comes when faced with so many opportunities and options in your mid-twenties. Brooke offers Lauren some suggestions on how to better get to know herself and her values, and also offers some super practical suggestions on how to develop boundaries, how to cope with self-doubt and how to practice present-moment awareness when the world is so full of distractions.

Brooke is then joined by Jocelyn Glei, host of the podcast Hurry Slowly and author of Unsubscribe: A modern guide to getting rid of email anxiety, who shares her own experiences of figuring out what living with intention actually means and how to view the mistakes and challenges of your twenties as essential learning experiences rather than failings or mis-steps.

      Enjoy!

Does slow living rob us of ambition?

Does slow living rob us of ambition?

Welcome to Season 4! As Brooke and Ben mentioned in the sneak peek episode a couple of weeks ago, this season sees a pretty significant shake-up to the podcast format and they’re excited to dive in to it with you.

The season starts with a question from Kate, who wants to know whether slow living and some of its adjacent elements – mindfulness, self-care, noticing, increased peace and patience – can actually rob us of ambition.

Kate is an author and also has a passion for teaching and podcasting, and fears that if she slowed down enough to focus solely on her writing, she’d be robbing herself of the opportunity to not only do some of the things that fill her up, but also to live on the ‘edges of life’, where so much of the material for her books is gleaned.

Brooke and Kate talk about fear, mental health, the importance of looking at our intentions when taking (or not taking) certain actions, and the stories we tell ourselves about pain and discomfort and creativity and just generally dig around in what role slow living plays and how to find more long-term alignment.

The second half of the episode then features a chat with the delightful Tsh Oxenreider – who is also an author, teacher, podcaster and wearer of many and varied hats, just like Kate. Tsh and Brooke discuss Kate’s questions and the constant recalibration of life’s priorities and joys, and they also talk about the important process of getting to know oneself – why we do things, why we struggle with other things, what our strengths and weaknesses and preferences are.

      Enjoy!

On settling, slowness and fitting out a new house: A Hostful Podcast

On settling, slowness and fitting out a new house: A Hostful Podcast

Unbelievable though it may seem, today's episode is the final poggie of Season 3. (Time flies when you're having fun!)

Before Brooke and Ben get in to today's episode and the outstanding listener questions that have been submitted throughout the season, they begin on a bittersweet note as they bid a very fond farewell to two Slow Home team members.

Once they wipe away their tears and (literally) play Steph and Ryan off in to the sunset, Brooke and Ben dive head-first in to some terrific listener questions. These include:

      • Apart from people, what do you most miss about Canada and the US? And what are you most glad to have in Australia?
      • Is it easier to live slower in Australia or in the US/Canada?
      • What are you finding challenging in regards to slow living, and what are you doing in response?
      • What area did you decide to buy and live in, and why did you chose that area?
      • Were you ever nervous about not being close to the city, not being close to family and instead living in a rural area?
      • Are you living mortgage free?
      • Is there a slow way to manage money?
      • Slow aspirations versus fast career path advice please?
      • What is your ultimate ’slow’ date night?
      • How have you gone re-buying things for the house? Slowly or all at once?
      • Have you bought things you gave away when you left for your trip?
      • What made Ben choose to go to therapy?
      • What are your favourite books of 2019?
      • Is Brooke currently writing a book?
      • What poggies are you currently listening to?
      • When will the next season of the podcast start?

As always, they do their do their best to answer these as honestly as possible (if not always, or ever, briefly) and end up discovering some really interesting things about themselves, their experiences of the past couple of years, and how they're each feeling now.

Season 4 of the poggie will be in your ears late October, and until then, take it slow!

Katrina Rodabaugh on why mending matters

Katrina Rodabaugh on why mending matters

Hello, and welcome to season 3!

We‘re thrilled to be back, and even more thrilled to share today’s conversation with slow fashion expert and advocate, fibre artist, writer and crafter Katrina Rodabaugh.

She and Brooke talk all things slow fashion: why Katrina got started, how her fashion-fast experiment became her lifestyle, the art of mending, creating systems and networks for thrifting and more. They also talk social media and the importance of ‘showing the cracks’, the trade-offs of going slow, and how to start slowing down your wardrobe. It’s an incredibly inspiring and practical conversation, and we hope you enjoy!

      Questions featured in this episode:

      1. What did your fashion fast initially look like?
      2. What surprised or challenged you in that first year?
      3. Was the idea of convenience something you had to overcome?
      4. You also grow and forage dye plants on your property and the colours you create are incredible – is this something new for you?
      5. Do you think there was a stigma attached to mending clothes, and do you think it’s shifting?
      6. Where can people get started with slow fashion?

April Hepokoski on creating a zero-waste, nature-based classroom

April Hepokoski on creating a zero-waste, nature-based classroom

This week Brooke is joined by early-childhood educator April Hepokoski for a fascinating discussion about all things child-led and nature-based learning.

April is the founder and teacher at The Little Barnyard Preschool in Duluth, Minnesota, where she centres learning around being outside in nature every single day. April also founded a zero-waste living group on her local community, where she shares tips and tricks for living with less waste as well as lobbying the city council to make changes in her town.

There are so many parallels between slow living and the approach of nature-based learning, and April is a prime example of someone taking action into their own hands in every aspect of her life. We hope you enjoy this inspiring (and practical) chat about learning, nature and grassroots change.

      Questions featured in this episode:

      1. When did you first become interested in zero-waste living?
      2. How did you structure a localised zero-waste living group?
      3. What is the philosophy or mission of The Little Barnyard Preschool?
      4. What caused you to combine child-led learning with nature-based learning?
      5. What does nature-based learning look like on a day-to-day basis?
      6. What do parents say? What benefits and differences do they see?
      7. How can people begin to bring this philosophy into their own home if there are no nature-based learning offerings in their area?
      8. What can educators do to start to bring nature-based learning into their school? Any resources or recommendations on how to start the conversation?
      9. Do you have any tips for bringing zero-waste principles into the classroom?

Jojo Hogan on why the Slow Postpartum movement is so important

Jojo Hogan on why the Slow Postpartum movement is so important

This week’s Brooke sits down for a heartfelt discussion with Jojo Hogan: founder of the Slow Postpartum movement, yoga teacher, aromatherapist, massage therapist and doula.

Jojo has been working with expectant mothers for many years, and now specialises as a postpartum doula, providing much needed support to mothers after giving birth. There are so many beautiful intersections between slow living principles and the postpartum care practices that Jojo provides and educates around, and especially considering her own experience as a new mother, Brooke was so excited to have Jojo on the show.

Brooke and Jojo talk about the pillars of postpartum care that cultures around the world share, the importance of deciding your parenting values before baby arrives, how women can create their own villages to support them after birth, and ways to bring more slow and presence to a stressful time.

      Questions featured in this episode:

      1. When did your own journey of slowing down and simplifying begin? What prompted it?
      2. When did you begin working with new parents?
      3. What does a slow postpartum look like?
      4. What’s something realistic that a new parent can do to bring some slowness into those early days post-birth?
      5. How can we approach the ‘stuff’ that often comes with having a baby with a slower, more conscious mindset?

      Listener Chat with Xan Holyoak

      Listener Chat with Xan Holyoak

This week we welcome back listener chats, as Brooke sits down to talk with Xan Holyoak. Xan is a listener of the show, a writer, a single parent and a slow living and nature loving woman. She first reached out to us after the nature experiment last year, and the more Brooke learned about her story, the more she wanted to share Xan’s wisdom with our wider community. So here we go!

In today’s chat Xan and Brooke talk about when she first started to slow things down, why she started writing about it on her blog, how her life changed after her husband suddenly passed away in 2015 and how she lives slowly now as a single, working parent. There’s a wonderful thread throughout the conversation of the importance of values, journaling and boundaries, and we hope you enjoy.

      Questions featured in this episode:

      1. Where did your journey to slow living/simplifying start?
      2. Why did you start your blog?
      3. Tell us about the way life changed after your husband died in 2015.
      4. How do you make everyday work, as a single parent, working mum and living slowly?
      5. Let’s talk about our shared love of journaling as a self-care practice. When do you journal?

Jacki Carr on redefining balance (and making room for failure)

Jacki Carr on redefining balance (and making room for failure)

Welcome to season 2 of the Slow Home Podcast! Today Brooke sits down with goals coach, co-founder of Rock Your Bliss and incredible public speaker/human Jacki Carr.

Brooke did some work with Jacki last year before embarking on the Slow book tour and it had the most enormous impact on her time on the road. So she was determined to chat with Jacki this season, and especially at this time of year, as there’s so much buzz about resolutions, goals and general New Year vibes, which is all Jacki’s passion.

Brooke and Jacki cover so much in this conversation, talking all things resolutions, change, defining and committing to goals, values, balance, community and how to use social media as a tool for connection rather than a crutch, by consistently returning to your values.

      Questions featured in this episode:

      1. How do you help people define their values?
      2. How do you encourage people to keep re-centering on their values even when life happens?
      3. Have you intentionally developed a crew of people in your corner to support you in living with your values?
      4. What are your thoughts on balance?
      5. Do you look for ease in situations, or always look to expansion?
      6. When did developing in-person communities become important to you?
      7. Do you have any tools you use to help social media be a way to connect rather than a crutch?

An Interview with Ben - Summer Series

An Interview with Ben - Summer Series

Welcome to the third episode of the Summer Series (Winter Warmies!) For all of January, we’ll be bringing back the best of 2018, re-sharing some of our favourite episodes to keep you company on the beach (or the slopes!)

Today we’re highlighting one of the most-loved episodes of last year - when Brooke interviewed Ben about his slow living journey. What started out as a chance to turn the tables and switch the spotlight ended up being a deeply personal and raw conversation. Ben talks about how he went from working a stressful, corporate job to being self-employed, and how he continues to make choices to live a slower life.

So many people connected with this episode, which is why we decided to include it in the Summer Series. If it resonates, we’d love for this to start a new conversation about slow with your loved ones. It’s the perfect time of year to check in and examine your priorities for 2019, so we hope this helps!

Rob Greenfield on the enormous power of small changes - Summer Series

Welcome to the second episode of the Summer Series (/Winter Warmies!) For all of January, we’ll be bringing back the best of 2018, re-sharing some of our favourite episodes to keep you company on the beach (or the slopes!)

Today we’re highlighting one of Brooke’s most inspiring picks of the year - her interview with Rob Greenfield. Rob is a self-described ‘dude making a difference’: an activist, environmentalist and all-around legend. We love that Rob shares his story so honestly and in a very relatable way - he was just an average guy who had a wake up call, and he talks about what his catalyst for change was, how he started to make changes, having the realisation that you can’t make enormous changes overnight and more.

We can’t wait to see how Rob goes with his current project - growing or foraging 100% of his food for a whole year. To read more about the episode and Rob, head over to http://slowyourhome.com/241/ for all the links and resources mentioned, as well as the full blog post.

How to tame the eco-anxiety and tit-for-tat gift giving

How to tame the eco-anxiety and tit-for-tat gift giving

It's hostful time again, and this week Brooke and Ben answer three very different listener questions and launch the big, exciting project they've been working on for the past few months. It's a good day all round!

First up, Rachael asks about coping with eco-anxiety - a great term which encapsulates the frustration that results when we try to make positive changes to our home and the waste we create, only to be constantly reminded by how imperfect our efforts are. It's an obstacle that many people come across and Brooke and Ben give their insights in to how to let go of the perfectionism and embrace smaller, more consistent changes.

Brooke then puts on her ranty pants as she and Ben discuss the inanity of tit-for-tat holiday gift giving. You know the gifts for the extended family and friends, the office Christmas party, the neighbourhood get-together? Those ones really grind Brooke's gears and today she and Ben talk about how to best opt out of those gift giving arrangements if at all possible, and what crap-free options are available for the situations where a gift is still appropriate. It's a good time of year to start considering the impact of all these novelty gifts, as we edge closer to the holidays.

Finally, Kerry asks Brooke and Ben what's most recently made them laugh uncontrollably. Brooke's answers are absurd and Ben's are a little closer to home!

Months ago Brooke and Ben mentioned a new project they were working on in response to the recent listener survey results, and today they're finally ready to put it out in to the world! The Live Life Simply Online Retreat is the first of its kind and brings together the wisdom and expertise of 13 mindfulness, simplicity and slow living experts into one blissful six-week online retreat.

The retreat is super practical and designed to help you learn at your own pace, in your own home. You can practice yoga and meditation, uncover your purpose, learn the essentials of low tox and zero waste living, dive deep in to mindfulness, slow money, creating a rhythm that works for your daily life, plus loads more - all at a time and pace that works for you.

Join Brooke and Ben, plus previous podcast guests, Jessica Murnane, Rachael Kable, Alexx Stuart, Kelly Exeter, Janell Burley Hoffman, Carolyn Tate, Kevin Janks and Dr Sarah McKay, as well as Erin Rhoads, Sam Doove and Lauren Verona from Zenko Yoga.

The line-up is incredible and we can't wait to see you there!

The sharing economy in action with Justin Morrissey of Toolo

The sharing economy in action with Justin Morrissey of Toolo

Today Brooke chats with Justin Morrissey, the founder of Toolo, the Blue Mountains’ first tool library and co-op. As you probably know, a huge part of slow living is based in both community and environmental stewardship, and tool libraries are a big step in the right direction.

In this episode Justin and Brooke get really practical, as he explains how he began the library (and what drove him to do so in the first place) as well as his advice for people who may want to start a library in their own community. They also look at how the organisation is structured and the work that went in to it before launching, as well as the vital role that volunteers play in its ongoing success.

Brooke and Justin also talk about the issue of convenience, and why our mindset needs to shift from one of immediacy to one of preparation (we can’t expect these resources to operate in the same way as the local Bunnings or big box store) and how learning to let go of the ego of ownership is a big part in the change too.

If you listen to today’s episode and want to know more about starting or running a tool library yourself, head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/185 and click the link to get in touch with the team at Toolo, as they’re a wealth of expertise and are happy to work with other communities looking to make the change. And if you live in the Blue Mountains, sign up and support Toolo! They need to make it to 150 members by 2018 in order to keep running and that means it’s on the community to support them.

      Enjoy!

Do men and women do simplicity differently?

Do men and women do simplicity differently?

This is a bit of a departure from the usual themes of the Monday shows, but Brooke was involved in a fascinating Twitter conversation a few weeks ago that got her thinking about simplicity writers, their gender and why the most popular ones are overwhelmingly male.

Brooke and Ben talk through the genesis of the conversation, as well as the fact that Brooke has noticed this trend for quite some time and believes it’s in part due to the fact that men and women (broadly speaking, of course) deal with problems differently.

Neither approach is right or wrong, and neither can effectively solve every problem without dipping in to the other approach occasionally, but it does beg the question of why one approach seems to be more popular than the other (at least in terms of Amazon best-selling lists, anyway).

Brooke thinks at least part of it has to do with confidence and fear of being judged (that’s definitely been a personal obstacle for her) and the impact this has on the directness of her writing. But there’s also the different ways of teaching and learning, and the different ways men and women approach problems.

It’s a really interesting conversation, and the full blog post is over at http://www.slowyourhome.com/182. Head over there and let Brooke and Ben know your thoughts on this one.

      Enjoy!

Tim Silverwood on circularity, connection and saying no to plastic

Tim Silverwood on circularity, connection and saying no to plastic

Tim Silverwood is one of Brooke’s environmental role models. He maintains that he’s just an ordinary guy who somehow found himself at the forefront of environmental activism in Australia, but his passion and knowledge means that while he may be an ordinary guy, the impact he’s having on the growing environmental movement in Australia is anything but ordinary. As one of the founders of Take 3 for the Sea and a powerful voice in the movement away from single-use plastics, Tim is having a massive impact both in Australia and around the world.

In today’s episode Tim and Brooke talk about the Plastic-Free July campaign and why it’s so important, but they also go back to the catalyst for Tim’s shift to environmentalism. Perhaps not surprisingly, Tim’s passion for protecting the ocean started in his passion for the waves and like so many people now heavily invested in protecting our wild spaces, Tim was a surfer who used his love of the ocean to drive changes in his own life.

They also talk about the importance of small steps, and why Tim believes it’s the only way to convert the apathetic in to the passionate, but also why these small steps are only the first part of creating global change.

One of the beautiful themes that keeps emerging in Brooke and Tim’s conversation is the idea of connection - both to each other and the environment we all live in - and Tim specifically talks about the ways in which we’re all connected to the health of the oceans. It’s far too easy to think the issue of plastic pollution isn’t one we’re part of, and Tim gets very passionate as he talks about the different ways our actions can have an impact - both positive and negative.

They also talk about the problematic issue of recycling and why so much of what we think of as ‘good recycling’ is actually exacerbating the problem, and why the circular economy and circular design is the way of the future.

Head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/181 for links to Tim’s online store, website and other links we discussed in today’s episode.

JOMO - The Joy of Missing Out

JOMO - The Joy of Missing Out

Most of us have heard of (and experienced) FOMO at some point. FOMO is the Fear of Missing Out and it strikes at the heart of modern life. We do things, attend things or buy things in order to avoid it, but there will always be things we miss out on. So why do we struggle with it so much?

A couple of weeks ago a friend of the show (Mr Andy McLean - you may know him from such programs as Episode 124 of The Slow Home Podcast) sent Brooke and Ben a photo of a Leunig poem about JOMO, and they thought it would be a great topic to chat about on today’s poggie.

JOMO is the Joy of Missing Out and the antidote to FOMO. It’s the utter delight that is saying no and doing less and choosing to not compete in the Busy Olympics. JOMO is a breath of fresh air when it feels like we’re choking on the idea that in order to be successful we need to be constantly in motion, striving and chasing the life that will make others envious.

JOMO comes from a place of abundance (everything, right now, is enough) while FOMO comes from a place of scarcity (I’m scared that this will never be enough) and Brooke and Ben talk about the many different ways to apply it in life. JOMO can apply to our stuff, busy-ness, excess, social media, comparisons, keeping up with the Joneses… In all of those areas of life we can joyfully choose to see that we have enough, after which saying no becomes a relief.

      Enjoy!

      020: Travel

      020: Travel

Brooke is just home from an amazing Canadian adventure with her family and is ready to hit the road again soon - this time for much longer. Kelly, on the other hand, talks about the challenge of leaving behind her daily routines when travelling and why she gets the most out of a trip when she's prepared ahead of time.

Both Kelly and Brooke love travel and the opportunities it brings, so it's interesting to hear their different perspectives, particularly when they end up with a very similar philosophy - that of slow travel.

They also talk about the benefits of travelling like a local, avoiding the historical site burnout of constant touring, and why they both love setting up a home base and exploring a region in-depth rather than being on the move every day or two.

This is definitely a lighter look at letting it be, and one that just might get the wanderlust burning!

      Meditation #2

      Meditation #2

We’re a little over a week into this month’s Slow Home Experiment of daily meditation, and in today’s episode Brooke talks about why she’s finding it increasingly difficult.

Being complete novices in meditation, they have no idea if that’s normal or not but in this episode Ben and Brooke talk about their favourite guided meditations and Brooke looks at why one of the sessions left her in such a rage.

They also list the seven meditations we’ll be following this week, if you wanted to join in and practice the same ones it might be fun to compare notes. Head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/71 for the full list.

And as they mentioned last week, Ben and Brooke also started the Slow Home Experiment group on the Insight Timer app if you wanted to join in.

      Enjoy!
