EP 413: Green Beret Nick Lavery - The Warrior's Warrior Makes a Stand
Nick Lavery is an active duty member of The United States Army Special Forces, known as Green Berets. In 2013, on his 2nd combat rotation to Afghanistan, his detachment fell victim to an insider attack, resulting in the loss of his leg. Refusing a military medical retirement, he set his sights on returning to operational status and after a challenging and comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate Nick's abilities to operate, he returned and was deployed to Afghanistan to conduct full combat operations. Considered the first Green Beret to return to combat as an above-the-knee amputee, we cover his amazing story and discuss his book 'Objective Secure: The Battle-Tested Guide to Goal Achievement'.

    A Veteran Green Beret’s Struggle

    A Veteran Green Beret’s Struggle

Former Green Beret and CIA war contractor Chris Cathers visits Mickey in the Chicagoland to talk about important work with the Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation. Cathers did 12 deployments to the Middle East and North Africa. State-side he spent fifteen years in the defense industry and became a corporate turnaround specialist.

For years, Chris silently struggled with post-traumatic stress (PTS), depression, and suicidal ideation, fearful that such a diagnosis would negatively impact his career. Additionally in late 2019, he was diagnosed with a sporadic form of advanced bone cancer called chondrosarcoma.

Facing these trials led Chris to get involved with “Brother’s Keeper,” a documentary to raise awareness of the veteran suicide epidemic and help for our veterans.

You can follow Chris on Instagram @Chris_Cathers or learn more about the documentary and non-profit at BKVF.org.

Combat Story (Ep. 80): Green Beret | Sergeant Major | Australian SASR Exchange | Talent War Group | Josh Johnson
Today we hear the Combat Story of a long-time Green Beret, combat veteran, and retired Sergeant Major Josh Johnson.

Josh spent multiple years downrange in Iraq and Afghanistan, many with 1st Special Forces Group, in combat where he led from the front but also spent years teaching other Green Berets and partner forces.

[Support us on Patreon and get exclusive content and insights at www.patreon.com/combatstory]

Josh was selected as an Exchange Officer to the Australian Special Air Services Regiment where he trained and fought alongside our very close Australian brethren. In his last two years of service, Josh focused specifically on leadership development and training.

Since leaving the service, Josh has continued training and developing leaders, this time with Mike Sarraille’s Talent War Group where Josh is a Partner and Senior VP of Leadership Development.

I hope you enjoy this interesting and wide-ranging Combat Story as much as I did.

Mykel Hawke: 8 Pillars of Survival Preparedness

Mykel Hawke: 8 Pillars of Survival Preparedness

How prepared are you for a grid down scenario?

While grim estimates from the government estimate that up to 90% of the population could be wiped out after just one year without power, today's remarkable guest has a much more optimistic view.

Today, I'm honored to be here with the one and only Mykel Hawke, a U.S. Special Forces Captain and Combat Veteran, TV Star, best-selling author and Outdoor Survival Expert.

You might recognize Mykel Hawke from a number of TV shows, including Man, Woman, Wild where he and his wife Ruth, work together to survive in legit life-threatening situations like raging backcountry firestorms or being lost at sea with limited to no supplies. Mykel and Ruth resort to eating reptiles, bugs and even rotting raccoons in precarious situations.

So if you want to conquer fear, be prepared for worst case scenarios and make survival preparedness fun for the whole family, this show is for you.

In this episode with Mykel Hawke, you'll learn:

    • Why Mykel resorts to eating rodents, reptiles and bugs in sketchy situations
    • Simple methods to protect yourself against the real threats of the wild
    • How to collect and sanitize water in an emergency
    • How to make survival preparedness fun for kids
    • The 8 pillars of survival
    • How to face your fears from someone who's been stalked by jaguar through the Amazon jungle
    • And tons more…

    324. Fatherhood for the Operator

    324. Fatherhood for the Operator

I have heard some honest discussions from Operators who prioritized Career over Fatherhood. You can do both, it just has to be a conscious effort.

Marcus is doing research and creating a practice to coach men how to be better Dads. This is a phenomenal idea, parenting does not always come naturally, and having a coach may be just the answer. In this 2 part discussion Marcus addresses:

    1. Creating a Dad-Identity- seeing yourself as a Dad; understanding the importance of the role.

    2. Consistency- discipline, routines, keeping promises.

    3. Importance of play.

    4. Not perfect, PRESENT-putting Dad time on the schedule; focusing attention on them; listening.

Holiday season is an important time to reflect on family, and what we can re commit ourselves to.

I hope this is meaningful during this time. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

100: Operation Eagle Claw: To You All, From Us All, For Having The Guts To Try

100: Operation Eagle Claw: To You All, From Us All, For Having The Guts To Try

A watershed event in the history of US Special Operations was the 1979 hostage rescue attempt at the embassy in Tehran, Iran. Known as Operations Eagle Claw, this failed mission and the tragedy at the Desert One landing site led to the formation of US SOCOM and pushed special operations into the next generation. The best way we can honor the hostages who remained in captivity and the service members who lost their lives is to draw some lessons learned and acknowledge their sacrifice for having "The Guts To Try."

    315. Overtraining

    315. Overtraining

Dr Lim from SKRATCH LABS talks about overtraining. This is an insidious syndrome from doing too much and not recovering enough. It is complex, can take 2-4 weeks to recover from, and is all too common.
Avoiding overtraining along with reducing injuries from training is one of the reasons we need coaches, very few people can coach themselves when training hard and operating harder!
